When I started getting into ultrarunning, I watched videos and read books, often wondering about the backgrounds of the athletes I was hoping to emulate. Were they great athletes? Had a predisposition for greatness? It's hard to take a snapshot of someone in time and figure out exactly where they came from from their image they portray now.
In this video, I provide a full background on myself in hopes to show you that my background was... nothing special... and that we probably share a few similarities. I take you on a quick walk through my childhood and adolescent years, then highlight my post-college period where I binge ate and drank, then focus primarily on what got me into running and what sparked my fuse for ultrarunning. I then end on a very brief synopsis of my first ultra up to my first 200 miler, providing a framework which you could replicate if you choose.
This video was incredibly fun to make, but I fear it may be incredibly boring to watch...at least to me, but that might be because I've both lived it and had to edit it! I do think it's important for those of you who, like me, were left wondering about the figures I was watching and taking advice from, so I hopes this puts "me" into better perspective and shows you that I possess no special qualities, other than motivation and maybe a bit of bull-headedness.

Ive often posted on FB that my ultra races are the Celebration of all my training, a preformance of months, years of me living. Gritty on and off the trail. The race is merely showcasing my endurance, resultion, preserverance and resilience in life. Run on, brother!

There's no shaming in this episode. IF YOU SEE MUCH MORE RELATE to what was said. Then THATS THE FLAT OUT TRUTH. It's your choice to do something to improve yourself. That's why people nowadays are just so weak. .. BOTTOMLINE, its all life choices that define what and who you are at the end of the day.

Thank you for a very raw and honest episode. You touched in so many underlying themes of competitive endurance sports. Sometimes we struggle to channel addictive behavior traits into positive directions!

Thanks for making your videos; I’m sure this channel will grow if you keep making them. Keep up the excellent work. I’ve got a similar story when it comes to drinking and eating junk food myself into feeling terrible (let alone looking terrible) to the point where I had to make a change last November and start running again. I’m spending all year training for my first 50k in October. For me, the training process itself is the reason; it’s a great way to spend time in nature. Currently averaging 50-mile weeks.

Great video! I'm def the same, every race I am cursing myself and saying I'm never doing this again...within 24-72 hours I'm ready to sign up for the next challenge to push myself.
