From Dream to Beekeeper - Our First Swarm of the Year Gets a Home

In this video we are working with one of our subscribers to get her first colony of bees. Pat reached out to us about getting started in beekeeping after reading some books and taking an on-line beekeeping class, building two swarm boxes herself, and watching a lot of RU-vid videos. We were able to take her a swarm of bees that we had caught in our yard (actually the first swarm of 2023) and got them installed in her first Layens horizontal hive. The install went really well, and the honeybees seem really happy in Pat's backyard. We enjoyed playing a small part in making this beekeeper's dream a reality.

Correction: Pat has planted Crimson Clover NOT Red Clover. Crimson Clover flowers are easily accessible to honeybees and produces great honey.

These two people, Roy and Shirley, are without a doubt the most delightful and generous couple I’ve ever met. And I absolutely love the way they work as a team. Today is day five and I’m pleased to report that for now the bees have decided to stay and are extremely busy. Whatever time I can spare each day, I find myself sitting on a chair, as close as I can get without alarming these winged ladies, along with my wonderfully intuitive Border Collie, Tess, constantly beside me. The fact that on occasion one of these pretty ladies will either bounce off my hair or fly extremely close to my ear should signal that maybe I need to back up and get the heck out of their space. But just maybe they understand why I’m really there. I want to hear their buzz, feel not only their unending energy but more importantly follow along in their journey. I have much to learn and much to write about. Thank you Ron and Shirley.
