I remember seeing this movie, and this scene in particular in the theatre back in 96. It was a pretty rowdy crowd at the movies that night until Salma came out and started dancing, then the entire audience immediately shut up, you could have heard a pin drop in that theatre. Let me tell you man, everyone in that theatre looked exactly like everyone in the cast. It's like the whole damn audience was hypnotized.

I'm a straight woman, but - besides being green with envy - well, I have always loved the Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs and after seeing that movie I came to the conclusion that Salma Hayek is the only actress I have ever seen who could have portrayed Princess Dejah Thoris, the most beautiful woman of two planets, as she should be portrayed. Those of you who have seen that John Carter movie, imagine Salma Hayek, looking like that, instead of Lynn Collins as the Princess... it would have been so perfect. She would commit to unconventional things just to stand out amongst the crowd, such as kissing Britney Spears on stage at a time when LGBTQ was not considered okay. But she didn't do it to take a stand for the community she did it to be in the news. You see, Madonna was becoming old news thanks to the emerging young fresh talent around her. So, she started following trends that were suitable for people who were decades younger than her, and she looked ridiculous. She was a 50 year old acting like a 20 year old. And she was bad at it. Whereas, performers her age, and older, become more poised and dignified in the way they portray themselves and their talents to the world, she was still acting like Californian 22 year old who just discovered alcohol and her tits.

I was 10 years old when Dad took me to see this. I remember it like it was yesterday. About 43 minutes in I whisper-yelled -- "Dad -- I thought this was about vampires." He was like "I don't know what's going on!" I remember, even being that young, that this was an incredible scene and I fell in love with movies -- right then and there -- I fell in love with Salma Hayek of course, Robert Rodriguez -- had to go back and rewatch Desperado, and was simehow able to finally get my hands on El Mariachi. I fell in love with Tarentino. This movie is quite epic. Me and Dad _LOVED_ it. I love you Dad.
