From Patient to Psychologist: My Journey with Mental Health

In this video, I open up about my experience with mental health. In my 20s, my mental health suffered a lot and I think it is important to share my struggles as accurately as possible in order to normalize the discourse when it comes to mental health and to remove some of the myths and stigma that surround this topic. I am happy I got to share with all of my audience my journey and how I went from a patient to a psychologist. Being a psychologist definitely does not make me immune to anxiety and depression. It still flares up sometimes, but I am so happy that it has stabilized and my experience allows me to be better at my job and more empathetic towards those who are going through their mental health struggles.
Below are the medications I took in chronological order for those who are interested:
2009: Celexa (Citalopram) 20mg: only one day because of the side effect I mentioned in the video.
2009: Anafranil 50mg and Valium 5mg
Early 2010: Anafranil 300mg and Valium 5mg
Mid 2010: Anafranil 300mg, Olanzapine 10mg, Klonopin 5mg, Lexapro 20mg, Zantac 150mg.
2015: Quit my medication cold turkey
2015-2016: Effexor 150mg, Pregabalin 400mg.
Currently: Effexor 225mg

This is so great Son, thank you for sharing your story as it can help others talk about what they are going through. The story brought back many memories the final outcome of which being you recounting them to help others; and this is the perfect illustration of what you have always been: a lovely son with a big heart, helpful, sincere and honest. We wish you the best, we love you Son and we are proud of you. Dad

Thank you so much Omar. It is so so relatable, and I pray for a healthy life for you. The only thing is, I haven't hospitalized as in my location mental health is still underway to get its complete awareness, yet I have been under my bed for more than a week during my anxiety peaks. It's been around 8 years now, and I feel much confident about being myself after taking the medications. It helped me to balance and provide proper control over my brain and the body, though there are few side effects. Currently, I'm pursuing therapy for a couple of months and hope it turns out well. My afraid is all on the relapse and the low level of confidence on how I could handle if I do relapse and fell into that pit of downward spiral. Thanks for making this video. ❤️❤️❤️

Many thanks Omar for sharing your very personal journey with all of us. With all that you have gone through it has made you a very strong person. Your story would have inspired many to not to be ashamed of their mental health and also how important it is for the sufferer's loved ones to give their full support. It is so admirable that your personal experience motivated you to help people suffering from mental health not only with your therapy but also with loads of empathy which is so rare to find even amongst our own. Kudos to you👍 and stay blessed always!!
