I've only been quilting for 4 months. At 73 you would have thought I'd been doing this forever. But I was intimidated by all that cutting. Never used a wheel cutter and mat. Grandmother used scissors. And pieced everything in her old treadle singer.. she taught me to sew. And tried to teach me to quilt. But it was awful. I'm on my 6 quilt. I'm hooked.

LOL...I just found this video today, and you said something that I had told my husband two nights ago. I've been trying to conquer Mt. Scrapmore too. Well, it seems I make a LOT of progress sewing the scraps together to use later, but when I get ready to quit sewing, it looks like I haven't TOUCHED that scrap pile. I told hubby that I was POSITIVE that pile procreated during the night, and some night I was gonna sneak in there and catch them in the act.

My Mount Scapmore consists of much smaller pieces I think of five inch piece as a precious gift! Influence of a lovely Gramdma who's husband died in the Spanish flu epidemic She brought up four children - my mother was less than a year old- on very little money Thankfully my life has been easier but the thrifty genes have come down I treasure the things she made and the memories I have of her Thanks for your channel I look forward to every post

I baste backing and bating together with LOTS of black thread and then starting in the middle, I start sewing pieces . The first piece is simply sewn o. The second is put face down on the first piece and then flipped over and both pieces are quilted. And so on. I also do some embroidering on them as I go along. When I get to the end, I square off my quilt and add the binding. It looks great~! And all done by hand. And no piece has to be cut any special way.

Omgoodness, I just recently discovered your channel. The more I watch the more I believe I have found a kindred spirit in the quilt world. I love scrappy quilts. I can not recall a time I was not the one who went for the scrap quilt in the pile. Now I will confess, I wish I had learned how to sew by my Grandmother. When I became disabled in 2011, I thought I was going to drive myself nuts, along with everyone else in the house. I have always kept myself busy, now I couldn't. Things are kind of backwards in a way in our house. My husband and I have 3 gorgeous daughters. I like football, he likes Nascar, I suck at Math, History is not one of his skills/likes. I could not sew a button on to save my life, the girls would have dad mend anything that needed it....finally one day after becoming disabled, he told me he was going to teach me how to sew. He thought I would like it. Dont tell him I said this, he was right, I do like sewing. My Grandmother made gorgeous quilts along with making gorgeous outfits and dresses for us to wear growing up. We became Grandparents for the first time the same year I became disabled. My first project I sewed a simple brick quilt for our Oldest Grandson. I was so tickled pink, I made one for our oldest Granddaughter. I could not be the Grandma mine was to me like I had envisioned, but I could make them quilts at least. I learned what I could from MSQC Jenny's tutorials. I got fabric in characters the Grandbabies liked in Disney or Cartoons. In the mean time i did what my Grandmother would do, anytime fabric was on sale, I would buy. Now I have a good stash which is great, but what to do? You are my lifesaver! You speak my language. Thank you for making these videos. I'm having a blast!

Thank you for the idea of cutting scrap fabric 5 inch strips and 2.5, I just got a box full of scraps, wasn't sure what to do with them, lots of old fabric, ironed them trimed them then cut the larger fabric to 5 inch and what was left 2.5, then what was left ,that could be used, goes to crumb quilts, now to find someplace in this little apartment to store them, thanks for your video
@rebeccawolf3196

Very instructive video. Thanks for the ideas and tips. I do want to mention that the volume on this video was kinda up and down - just fyi. I have so many scraps and I just rough sort them in a three divided laundry sorter. I use one bin for excess batting that is cut off the finished quilts (to be used for smaller projects), one bin is for odd shaped larger fabric pieces and the final bin is for strips (normally 2.5 inch). Smaller pieces get cut into 2.5x3.5 inch pieces and they get sewn into pairs like your starter/ender and then they get put into blocks that are truly scrappy. Even smaller pieces get stitched and flipped onto a paper roll (thermal tape or receipt paper) and then I can use this for crazy border or improv blocks. I do like the idea of having a few go-to patterns on hand for just this purpose.

Your tutorials are a blessing! I have been trying to find someone who can speak intelligently, explain about how to organize scraps. Too many want us to buy more material and cut it up to make quilts. I like the idea of using what I have and have inherited from my late mom. I kept looking and enjoyed hearing your video, and now I have subscribed to your site. I appreciate your knowledge and down to Earth style of speaking. Too many either treat us like we don't even know what a needle and thread are, or bounce all over the video and ramble on to the point we lose what they are talking about. I have so many holiday themed materials, and I want to do what you said and cute them into strips and try to make a dent into my scrap mountain. Thanks

I love you and your videos! I just found them a few days ago. I just turned 50, have been sewing since I was 13 or 14. I'm not a gifted seamstress; I just love it. I've made some pretty fantastic formal dresses, clothing and home décor. Quilting has always been a passion of mine, but what few things I've done seemed so cumbersome that it's remained a subdued passion, with the exception of about 15 jean quilts. not a whole lot of technique other than matching corners up. Watching you I realize I've gone about things the hard way! I'm so excited to make all 10 quilts shown here and a whole lot more from other videos - pillows, bags, and leftover scrap quilts. So much potential! I hope your friends and family know how lucky they are to have you! Thanks for sharing your time, talent, knowledge, and passion. Hugs!

I find the scraps get out of hand in a big hurry. After 5 years or more of intense quilting, bin after bin exists from yardage to fats with a smidgen cut out to unusable sizes. I love these patterns! Thanks so much for sharing. I find setting aside one day per month for nothing but scrap clean up. Some pieces go into a bin by colour without cutting and others get cut to anything from 1” to 12.5” squares. I am going to start setting aside one day a month for using them. I have enough cuts for several quilts made using your great pattern ideas!

I have a drawer in my sewing machine cabinet that is about half full of HSTs that came from the "sew & flip" method, and they're just waiting patiently for me to get off my duff (or perhaps ON it!) and start stitching them together. They're already in pairs, right sides facing, so what the heck am I waiting for? 😄 Loving your videos; they always give me great ideas for making more quilts (and your series on color and value is Fabulous!). Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

Piles can some time be daunting...especially HST's which often need to be trimmed. I would try doing 10 or 20 a day or when you sit down to sew

It hasn't been but a few days since beginning to binge watch your fab videos. So far I have been inspired to manage my stash, tidy my studio and to work on the fundamentals. Thanks so much!

I love scrappy blocks. I like to keep my Mt Scrapmore in check by working on a couple of blocks everyday. Even if I don't have a big project Im working on, I work on few scrappy blocks.I hope you give a couple of these a try.

Karen, I love your series of videos. I’m jumping back into quilting after many years. I quilted while raising my young children, stopped while returning to work, now back again in retirement. Please explain& do a video on “ fussy cuts”.

I've made a few scrap quilts. Two types, stripe and patch, both look great. Nice gifts. But I'll try your tips to impress my 'quilting sister' haha. She hates making scrappy quilts.

I love stuff like this. Im going to make a fabric block collection to hang on my wall... much in the way you would display family photos. Of course there will be a corresponding quilt. Whether it stays in my home will be a different story, lol.

Oh MY! I think you are an answer to my prayers! I have been quilting for a little over two years and you are answering so many questions about how to use my scraps (I will have to watch your color theory series). I just watched your video on handling leftover batting. Thank you for putting out all this information to us new quilters! I still have so much to learn! I'm glad to have some new ideas on how to handle my scraps better and especially my batting! I hope you have a blessed day! Happy quilting!

I love scrappy quilts and more so during this pandemic when I’ve been buying leftover quilting cotton from others. I make them and donate the quilt tops to a charity that finish them for cancer patients. I get to do the fun stuff and it’s an inexpensive hobby when using scraps. Just found your videos and I love your down to earth style. Keep making those videos!

Hi Karen, I made my first little quilt, using as many of your tips and tricks as I could. It came out really well, and I loved doing it. I’m just sandwiching my first HST quilt, sewing them into pinwheel blocks. The points are pretty good for a beginner. I followed your advice, taking photos and looking at them in mono to check values. Really pleased again. Thank you so much for your help. 💐

I’m new to your channel. Been sewing since I was little, and my mom was my Home Ec teacher. That dates me since it’s not even taught and more. No matter how long you’ve been sewing, you can always get new ideas. Love the strips of 3 idea in which you turn the middle one upside down. Think I’ll use that in a variation of Fence Rail. Thanks for all your ideas and great videos. You’re friendly and informative. I feel like I’m sitting across the table from you. Like my BFF neighbor. 😉😉😉

I am a scrap quilter and I'm loving your videos. I've been on a run to use up all my strings. Ready to put one quilt together and have a stack of blocks to make more. The bonus?? I have used up ALL my Yellow/Gold/Brown strings and freed up space in my string bin.
