Marlin - the other Big Name in lever action rifles. Sure, Winchester is more famous because their rifles got more screen time in cowboy movies. But Marlin made just as many lever guns, including the beautiful Model 39A. Brownells Gun Tech Keith Ford tells us about this handy, sweet-shooting .22 rimfire lever action. Due to its tube magazine, the 39A will handle .22 Long Rifle, of course, and also .22 Short and Long. More unusual, the 39A is a takedown rifle, so it easily disassembles into two compact units for carry and storage. Earlier guns came with nice walnut stocks, and from the 1950s onward, the 39A has Marlin's trademark Microgroove rifling. Now, strictly a Marlin Custom Shop item, many, many 39As were manufactured so there are plenty on the used market.

A year and a half ago, I went to a gun shop feeling like I'd buy a .22 lever action carbine, I didn't had a particular model in mind, then I saw a 70's era Marlin 39a and was like "hey... I've heard good things about this gun, might as well take that one...", 450€ and 3 month later (because Belgium... Don't ask...) and it's now in my safe; I had no idea they were so desirable... Earlier this month, I bought a rare ass FN made mossberg 500 at the same place... I should go there more often...

My Grandfather and I have a Model 39A Golden Trigger that was made in 1957. It belonged to my Great Grandfather. It was awarded to him at some sort of Marine Corps social gathering. My Grandfather hunted small game with it when he was 17. The action still runs smooth as glass even after 62 years of use. They don't make 'em like they used to.

one of my employers came across one of these he insisted i buy through him, he was a firearms collector and amateur gunsmith and knew his stuff. He told me this was one gun he wanted me to have in my own collection, and i had no idea just how good a deal it was. I still have it and it's a favorite for range days. I kind of can't believe the prices they ask for these is all, though it's a real jewel of a rifle.

Nice rifles. I might add that the ejector can be pushed against the side of the receiver then retained in that position for cleaning using its rotating screw. Locking back the ejector prevents the ejector from scraping the cleaning rod while cleaning from the breach end. After cleaning the barrel, the retaining screw must be rotated back to its original release position to free the ejector from its retained position before reassembly of the action halfs.

My Dad had the 39A with a 3power scope when I was a kid. I carried it for years in Alaska. Shot many a grouse in the head and rabbits. I bought one for myself years later. It is still my favorite gun. You can hit dimes at 50 yards. You should never underrate the 22. Put in the right spot and most anything goes down!

I have a 1954 Marlin 39A my father gave me in 1957 (new). I'm 74yo now still a highly accurate rifle at 50yds and more with groupings of a quarter in size. Of mention, the extractor, once bolt is removed, is a hold-down quarter turn screw that allows the extractor to be held down for running your bore cleaning rod from the receiver end, keeps the. extractor compressed and out of the way. Marlin put great thought into thier rifles.

Living in the country all my life, I've shot a LOT of .22s in my 66 years. My old 39A, and the 39A in general, is the best .22 rifle I've ever shot. Balance, accuracy, quality of build, and the fun factor are all unbeatable. There are shooters who believe it's the best .22 ever made, and I'm one of 'em. If Remington, and Marlin, discontinues them it'll be a sin, and one of the most stupid moves any company has ever made.

MB58: I installed a Lyman#2 tang sight on my 39a. I did drill and tap one hole - but on the tang. Sorry if I confused you. Marbles also makes a tang sight (with windage adj - which makes it bulkier than the Lyman). I like the tang sight because of the longer sight radius. I do have an early Lyman peep sight that screws into the side of the receiver of my 1956 30/30 Win 94. It came that way - bought the rifle at my local gun store so I don’t have any install details. Hope that helps, all the best.

I was trying to correct the part in my last comment where I stated Marlin never made a Mountie with a 24 inch barrel. The first Mountie had a 24 in. barrel but all subsequent Mounties had a 20 in. barrel. Marlin also built a Model 39M Article II (1971-1972) with a 24 in. barrel but it’s not Mountie. If yours says Model 39A-Mountie and has a 24 in. barrel it is probably very rare and valuable. The end of my last comment was wrong and in my efforts to correct and erase the error I in advertently sent it. Please excuse.

I also have a 1950 39a that my father in law found leaning against a tree in the woods 30 years ago. It was in horrible shape as expected. Now it looks horrible (beauty is in the eye of the beholder though) but it functions perfectly after the only part that needed to be replaced... the ejector spring. A gun shop in the southern tier of NY had no problem finding and installing a spring for about $20. I recommend contacting some gunsmiths and just asking. These rifles were made for a long time and any competent smith will have worked on a million of them and be very familiar from what I understand.

Wouldn’t sell or trade either of my 39A rifles. Not trying to be impolite but have not seen a Henry that can match the quality or accuracy of a Marlin 39A. Henry makes a good gun but not as good as Marlin. Just my opinion. Marlin didn’t discontinue the 39A, Remington couldn’t produce them with the quality for the price Marlin could after they bought them out. The group that owned Remington at the time of aquision knew nothing about building firearms and hence their bankruptcy. Now Ruger owns the rights to Marlin and all their equipment. I have seen a review on the Ruger/Marlin 1895 just out in December 2021 and from what I observed it is s good as Marlin produced. Us Marlin lovers are hoping and praying that Ruger will produce the 39A again at a very reasonable price since Henry is one of the only one building a 22 lever gun at reasonable prices. I guess time will tell. Also to the gentleman who claims he owns a Mountie with a 24 inch barrel, you own the only Mountie ever produced with a 24 inch barrel. It was introduced as the first variation of the Model 39A-Mountie. The second variation of the Model 39A-Mountie and all subsequent Mounties had a 20 inch barrel.with all due respect , I own the book entitled Marlin Firearms A History Of The Guns And The Company That Made Them and cannot find anyplace where they built a Mountie with a 24 inch barrel. They made a Model 39M Article II (1971-1972) with a 24 inch barrel but all Mounties had a 20 inch barrel. They were considered the carbine version of the 39A. Maybe my book could be wrong but it was written from the Marlin records.

Did you even watch the video because he answered your question. They don’t have the skilled labor required so it’s a “custom shop” special-order only rifle now...and it’s $3200! Henry rifles are not comparable to the 39a. The Henry receivers are a zinc/aluminum alloy and they have some plastic internal parts. Not a bad rifle, but nowhere near the quality of the model 39

I own a 39 A that my grandfather bought for me in 87 and the only issue i had with it was that shells were getting jammed sometimes while engaging the lever action. Took it to a gunsmith and he saw that the action just needed to be filed down a bit more. Been smooth as butter ever since. Like he said in the video, it took a lot of skilled laborers to make this gun and it had some QC issues because of the intricate work required. Overall though no complaints from me. Absolutely fantastic gun. Still can shoot a shotgun shell off a boxtop at 50 to 60 yards.
