Privyet! Think the M1 Garand was the only military semi-auto rifle to see widespread service in WWII? Oh, Comrade, think again! The other was the Russian Tokarev SVT-40: "The very best there is when you absolutely, positively have to smoke-check every Nazi trying to invade Mother Russia. Accept no substitutes." That's what Brownells Gun Tech and collector Keith Ford tells us. Tokarev's SVT-40 is an innovative gas-operated, short-stroke pistoned, tilting bolt lockup, magazine-fed design. Keith pops the hood, shows us what makes the SVT-40 tick, and tells us a whole lot more about it, too. Do svidaniya!

Have to say, I really appreciate the From the Vault episodes with a little bit of historical background and the look at the internals, as done here.

Notice the flex of the entire rifle when being fired. This thing must have absolutely rattled itself apart on the full auto AVT.

Someone should start creating the files neccessary to machine these old guns so people can get their hands on them forever.

I bought an SKS collector's guide book on Amazon. Encompassing extremely comprehensive info on every variant and production detail, it contained blueprints for every part and assembly of the gun. You could make a precise replica from that data, it was that thorough. I mention it in one of my videos. Wouldn't be surprised if a similar book exists for the SVT, as tgey are nearly identical guns.

Correction to the info he has on the gas piston and gas adjustment: Adjustment is done with the issued wrench that fits over the front end of the gas regulator and does not require removing parts. Only time you'll need to remove those parts is for cleaning. Rotating the gas piston like he does is a way to remove it from the rifle. I'm late to the video, but I hope this helps people who may be new to the rifle.

Well techically, it has more or less the same firing cycle with the SKS later in mid 1940's and later with the legendary AK47 , the similarities of the barrel with the gas operated piston are striking

The "Russian" Military ceased to exist with the dissolution of Russia in 1918 The SVD 40 is a Soviet Army rifle. Many of the SVD40 Rifles exported to North America were Finnish captured trophy's which Finland sold off.

Couple things with this weapon 1 it was only issed to experanced troops usually elite assault troops and 2 they would set the gas port to high or 1 notch from it and run it there that would over gas it and it would run "better" that way at the expensive of parts durabality but the soldiers life span was shorter than the guns life so
@PugilistCactus
@PugilistCactus 4 года назад
Main reason it was given to specific troops is because of training requirements. The average grunt would not have been able to maintain this.

The one thing I took away from this video was an overuse of the word "but". Try not to use it as a placeholder when speaking. It makes it seem as if you're negating everything said directly before the word "but". Combined with how much it was used, it doesn't help your presentation of facts at all.

Referring to the actions of the state from the 1917 Jewish Bolshevik takeover until ~2014, it is objectively incorrect and inappropriate to use the word "Russian", as the state, military, etc were not run by Russians. The Soviet Union ruled over Russia (as well as many other republics and peoples) but the rulers were not Russians, nor did they rule in the interests of Russians.

Worst rifle ever. Flimsy, poorly made and extremely difficult to field strip. I got rid of mine quickly. It was the worst surplus rifle that I ever bought.
