Oh man!!! I love that door, its amazing!!! Not only did you build it yourself, put a window and doggie/kitty door it it the window isn't just one solid window!!!! It is one that can actually opened on nice days and give the house a a chance to turn over the air inside to keep the house fresh and sweep out lingering airborne germs to keep your son healthie!!!!!! I love watching your videos!!!!!!
Just wanted to say how envious I am to watch you work with your son on a home of his own. I dream of being able to do the same with my son when he is old enough. I also appreciate your thorough explanations in your voice over. Thanks for the inspiration!
At times it seems slow, but kids grow up before you know it. Best wishes and thanks for watching! Finding land is a challenge. We weren't originally looking for off-grid land, but it has worked out well. 😎🏜️
I’m confused... if Kyle has a cat and is thinking of getting a dog, who are the people your grand dog belongs to? Great job on the door for Kyle’s house. Wishing you, April and your family a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather, gentle rains and restful evenings together. Peace
The dog is our daughter's. 🐕 Thanks so much! It's hot, but hopefully we'll get to the rainy season soon, and it will cool down! Wishing you a wonderful weekend! 😊🏜️
Awesome results, great job! But for me- I love thick south west & especially Mexican Doors on adobe houses. And worry if security were ever an issue. Later you may have to have a shutter or security outer door if property isn't occupied for periods I enjoy your presentations VM.
Are you guys in a state without building codes? It looks like you guys did all the design work yourselves without having to run around getting it approved - is that right?
Yes, we were able to design and build everything ourselves. The County we are in has what is called an opt out permit. Only an exterior inspection is done once the house is completed.
There is a cover that snaps on if he wants to close it. Most animals are pretty wary of people, but something may come in eventually. There have been some skunk sightings around here lately. Our daughter's dog got sprayed, and we saw one in the wash. 🦨😬😄
The door looks awesome, nice work. Could you tell me - is this a common way or code requirement to install house doors? For some reasons, i'd install door in such a house to open outside, to save precious internal space. On some northern territories they do install external doors to open inside to have chances to dig out after heavy snowfalls, but in the desert it's not the most probable scenario, i guess. When you build doors to open outside, you can install them in a way that they open parallel to the wall taking very little space when open. And mosquito nets may be used as internal part of the door, which may be useful in your location, providing ventilation and almost no hassle going through. You have a very solid roof installed in a way that covers your entryway well against elements, so it should be safe as well in case of a sudden rain for example. Second question - i'm really curious if terrasses\verandas are in use in your location? In locations where sunlight is gererously provided by the nature, i regularly see that terrases under light roof are quite popular way to extend habitat, like to use it as an external kitchen, social area, base for flowers and just to peer around in a comfy chair. It looks quite natural for me to build one close to house entrance and intersect the roofs to protect against weather. Or the main idea is to stay inside with an air-conditioner? Very nice and sturdy house you have build, very interesting project, thanks for sharing.
We prefer that the door opens in, mostly so it doesn't get caught by the wind. On our house, there is a wall behind the door, so it doesn't really take up any usable space. Kyle is planning to put some standing shelves behind the door. It should works out well, and the door shouldn't interfere with anything. Outdoor space is nice and could always be added later, but for now, we just want to get this house livable. The evening is typically really nice and cool. It's a great time to go for a walk or to sit outside in a shade on the east side of the house. Appreciate it, thanks for watching! 😎🏜️
I love how you incorporated the weatherstripping (I have a small appreciation for its importance after having replaced it on my doors, fairly straightforward to do). But I'm curious what's the philosophy around how tightly sealed this house will be, with respect to their being those ventilation holes in the walls? I don't have an appreciation for the optimal approach in your climate.
Yes, weather stripping is pretty important to keep water and bugs out. It's fairly easy to replace, but getting the boards set exactly in the right place is a bit tricky. The screen material is a way to keep bugs out, and let cool night air in. He'll probably close them in more at some point. 🌞
Yet another great video, the door looks great it will look even better when the walls are painted, ive never seen a door with an opening window, quite unique and functional!! well done, and the garden looks really cool, good on you! bye till the next one.
Yeah, we had one cat that liked to bring in big grasshoppers to play with. I'm not sure that this particular cat has ever caught anything though, she doesn't seem interested. 😺
@@RedandAprilOff-Grid Yeah, that's what I thought. Maybe others are referring to the labor intensive nature of the work. Anyways great series, and that house looks like it'll last a lifetime!
Looking good. If it doesn't look "home made" at the end, is it? I'm happy the door has a large window in it, I personally may have a skylight and some fan arrangement for air circulation. When the sand is too washed it's difficult to mould.
Thanks! 😄 We looked into adding a skylight, but decided it wasn't worth the cost or the trouble. The portholes bring in a lot of light, so it's not too dark. Yes, he's planning to put in a ceiling fan. For concrete, we just use sand from the property.
