The English word frontier means that which is in front. It is derived from the Latin word ‘frons’ and more directly from the French ‘front, meaning ‘forehead’ (of man and also of anything, say state) and designated an area which was part of a whole and lay ahead of the hinterland. It was often called the ‘foreland’, or borderland or ‘march. A frontier is the political and geographical area near or beyond a boundary. A frontier is more properly a region or zone having width as well as length”. During very early period a frontier represented a zone of varying width situated on the periphery of a state and most often depopulated because of unfavorable physical conditions.
