Frustration builds when Karen doesn't understand what I'm telling her to do with her new horse Bruce as she is preparing for her first pre-futurity at the NRBC on him.

That tip about getting off immediately after a good stop is a good one for any discipline. It has worked for me with my hot but broke chestnut quarter horse mare and for an OTTB MARE THAT HAD NO BRAKES. It’s instant reward for them. I do it all the time.When I sit back a little and say whoa, if they stop in their tracks I get right off. If they don’t stop in their tracks and take a few steps I trot them off and ask again.....then get off if it’s good.

I have sent kids home from the show for less than that. Adults are just supposed to act properly and with respect at all times. They talked it out finally but she should have approached him properly to begin with, not walkaway with blatant disrespect. Just saying but shows are high stress and everybody should get that the intensity rises big time.

Agreed with being sent home, and doesn’t matter what the relationship is! If someone’s giving their time to you and trying to help you, the least you can do is listen and/or say give me a sec and let me process what I just did. I know my husband doesn’t take that lightly, a slap in his face is what he calls it.

Hi again MATT Practice and more practice especially the way you're doing it before the event. Clean up those rough edges. A bit surprised at Bruce! He's handier in the spins then I thought he'd be but all in all his laziness means slower probably in everything unless you keep on him! That's going to be his biggest challenge. Passed that think he'll be amazing!!! Small but mighty. Tough spot for you Matt coaching your wife. Sometimes couples can work that out others not. But you are so amazing I'm thinking Karen will listen. She did end up realizing what you said worked. Yay you got dinner lol!!! You're soo deserving because you're really really good so yes go for it get it done!!! Love Tulsa so enjoyed showing there. Surely will be cheering for you from afar... Thx as always for sharing.

@annikavanderbroek2069
@annikavanderbroek2069 3 года назад
Hi! I'm no Matt Mills but I put my horses tails up like George does. It's called a tail bag. The tail is washed and braided and then put into the bag which is tied into the top of the braid. It keeps the tail clean, healthy, and stops it from getting damaged. If you have a white tail it also stops it from getting stained between washes. You should redo it every week though. Hope this helps!
@sofiaspanou3357
@sofiaspanou3357 3 года назад
@@annikavanderbroek2069 Hey there! Yes I am familiar with the tail bag. But I have the impression that you do that only when horses are in the stable and after a a bath.. Horses have their tail because its very useful for them. How are they supposed to keep away the flies if they can't use their tail? 🙂

@mobility63
@mobility63 3 года назад
They can still use their tail to swish away flies even when it's in a bag. When their in their stall at home, there's an automatic fly spray system installed in each stall, so flys aren't much of a problem. Another thing is some horses tails are long, so when your working them, stopping, backing up, they could step on it and pull hair out, hence braid n' bag.

Bruce bucks her on their second fast right circle, I think Karen brings up a good point about him not being ready for both legs applied together. Right at 4:02 he drops his inside shoulder and bucks her when she asks for more. He is clearly lazy, and seemingly impatient. I'd make him lope a tight ass circle every time he pinned an ear or bucked her like that. It may start as a bunny hop right now but if he finds he can get away with that eventually it will be a full buck when he's asked to go faster than he wants. I hope they can figure it out before the show!

@@mattmillsreining1 I have to disagree with your reasoning. When horses canter and gallop they carry their heads above their withers do they can see where they are going. Higher head, longer field of view, better chance of seeing what's in front of them, and, in an escape situation, a better view of where the predator is that's chasing them. The level topline and head down grazing postures are rest postures. If you were correct hunters, jumpers and eventers would approach a jump head low. The don't they carry their heads up so the can see where they are going. Dressage horses are another example. If a low head carriage was optimal that is where their heads would be. If the head is higher they can more easily shift weight to their hindquarters where the power is. A low head carriage put a horse on the forehand. This is common knowledge in almost every other discipline, including working cow horses, the root of reining, bridle horses and working ranch horses. They keep their heads up so they can see the cow they are tracking. This is why, back in my day, reining horses had an eyes above the withers carriage. Bottom line is that horses are more biomechanical efficient if their heads are higher.
@mattmillsreining1
@mattmillsreining1 3 года назад
@@matttaimuty5397 I hear everything you’re saying and I appreciate your opinion and enjoy the debate. The proof is in the performance for me. Common knowledge is a myth. These horses and trainers are improving each and every year. You’re absolutely right. Head down is a rest posture for sure which is absolutely what I’m after every day. Can’t force that. They have to be comfortable with the training or they Will go in Prey mode. Have a great day!
