PN Junction is a device which is made with a P Type Semi-conductor and N Type Semi-conductor most commonly used material is Silicon.
Intrinsic silicon is made of pure silicon atoms. When a solid is form it is made up of atoms. And they have a specific arrangement. As for silicon atom they make covalent bond with the neighboring atoms.
Covalent bond is the bond which forms when an atom shares its outer most/ valence electrons with the neighboring atoms. In Semi-conductors covalent bond is present.
If we have a Trivalent material for example Boron. Trivalent material have only three valence electrons in its outer most shell. Pentavalent materials are the one's having five valence electrons in their outer most shell. By injecting any of the Trivalent or pentavalent materials in the silicon we are making a semi-conductor.
If we inject a Trivalent material in a intrinsic silicon it will cause a deficiency of electron. We call it a N Type semi-conductor.
If we Inject a Pentavalent material in a intrinsic silicon it will cause an excess of electron. We call it a P Type semi-conductor.
Charge carriers in N Type semi-conductors are the Electrons. For P Type semi-conductors the majority charge carriers are holes.
If we bring P and N Type materials in contact with each other. Since the P Type of material is in want of Electron and the N Type material is excess in electrons. The electron in N Type will rush toward the P type to fill the holes.
