There's been very little running this past week thanks to a nasty infection, but in prep for the Silva Lakes Traverse 100km race in just over a week's time, I thought I'd talk you through everything I'll be taking with me for fuel & nutrition during the race (complemented by aid station snacks of course!).
It'll be a really tough day out and I'm absolutely terrified, thanks to months of broken training, but I'm there to have fun, and I'm also super excited to get out and enjoy the scenery!! It'll be beautiful.

I really enjoy snacking on dates whilst I’m running. 👍 and when it’s not too hot raspberry ruffles are great but would soon melt on a sunny day 😫

My advice would be, eat as much normal food as possible, the things you're used to and go easy on the high sugar things. I have seen so many people throwing up on the utmb because they eat too much sugar, too many gels. I would also steer clear of hot food at the aid stations, simply because it's different to what you're used to. So many people are sick after the noodle soup. Stick to your own thing. There is no need to be rigid about every 45 minutes, go with the flow. It's more important to stay hydrated. All the best💪

Yup pretty much what I'll be doing! I'm pretty used to eating whilst on the move but I'll only do what feels good. It's all just a rough plan 😌

I agree. I have never understood runners take such care with nutrition most of the time and then rely on these gels and chews and stuff.

Good luck, I'm so excited for you!! I hear you on the pizza and running. I honestly run happiest when I have something heavy, but not too spicy or acidic, in my stomach. Looking forward to the video! Go smash it!

I can’t wait to see you do this race!! You’ll smash it. I am from cumbria and spent my childhood in the lakes - I hope you don’t mind me saying this but it might be worth taking some purification tablets for water from streams or just avoiding water if there are any sheep or cows in the fields as it could make you poorly - the chances may be low but I just thought it might be worth looking into for you :). You might already being doing this but just thought I’d mention it! Good luck!! 🎉🎉🎉 x

All the best for the race Flora. I think getting race-day nutrition dialled in can be very tricky. I use Tailwind and try to eat 'normal' food at aidstations. My last 100 miler back in October I got things just right. Tailwind in the flasks , GU gels about every half hour plus the food from aidstations which was sandwiches, nuts, fruit. At 50 miles and 75 miles I had a pot of instant mash and some rice pudding. Look forward to seeing the race pan out for you 💪💪. Go smash it.

I really like, and am inspired by, the fact that you are focusing on food and nutrition for your first 100km. This is definitely the right focus and, for me, it's the approach I'll take to my own first 100km non-stop in July. Some great food suggestions here! Thank you!

@@FloraBeverley you mentioned the 250-300 calorie per hour goal, which sounds right to me! Your foods look appetising too! I'd go for a bit more savoury as well, but it sounds like your aid stations have that. Pizza and burritoes! Yes!

Flora, you've got this! Have the bestest time and enjoy it. The Lakes are so beautiful and that route will be brutal but picture perfect. I'll hope for good weather for you. I can't believe there are only 2 aid stations! 😮 (but the pizza sounds great!). Just ordered some more Luchos which arrived today, dammit! I'll just have to order some more with your discount code! :) Also i've just purchased some of the Torq flapjacks on your recommendation (carrot cake, apple and ginger) so am excited to try them on my next long run.

Tailwind is insane.... I used it last year in the Xterra Trail Marathon Snowdonia.... and I didn't take any jells... Great stuff in a 27 mile trail run - as it was a hot day I carried extra powder for water stations and I refilled 4 times ~ good luck Flora PS..... if you are low on water and pass a grave yard strangely enough 90% of graveyards have a water tap for watering flowers etc.... just a thing I found on long runs!!!

I was watching this as I cooked my pasta yesterday, very engrossed, didn't notice I'd turned the wrong hob on and melted my bloody phone! The case saved it luckily. Great Video Flora, good luck for the race!

Last year, I went off piste at Ennerdale and lost over 1.5 hrs of time and gained an additional 9km! 😂

Running my first 50km in a couple of months with 1500m of elevation. I am not too worried about the distance but I am not sure if the elevation will catch me out. Looking forward to it though

I know this is late but it would also be good to know how to do pre-race nutrition as in the morning and evening the night before

On the morning, do what you've always done before a long run, nothing new. If you're staying away from home consider taking your own cereal or bread etc, so nothing changes. Low fibre products are best! After the run, you want to eat whatever you can really to replenish calories! We went ordered pizza, but equally if you can, try to get in protein to start the healing process for your muscles. You'll need lots of carbs and lots of electrolytes too. The days after eat as much as you can & ey to get in plenty of wholefoods too. Your body needs all the support it can get! :)

Got my second ultra in 3 weeks (50 k) and my third is an 80 k in June. I look forward to your video of the race, see what it was like and any tips you might have. For a 100k what type of milage is recommend? Per wk or time on feet “hrs per week” over say a 20 week training program. Will you have a discussion on this topic on your channel, thanks in advance.

A lot more than I've been doing! 🙈 I'd really recommend getting a training programme if you're doing an 100km run. I used the Runna app which is great. Use the code FLORA for 2 weeks free to check it out!
