This is a camera I've been really curious about for quite sometime. A few months ago I finally picked one up. Since then I've taken this camera on a trip and have used it in some of the city & street photography scenarios I love to shoot. This video is my review of this Fujifilm camera, the X-E1.

I paid 110USD for it incl leather strap and 5 batteries. I own XT2 and XS10 aswell. The XE1 is amazing. My fav for vintage lenses and analogue feel. Great images. All my photos @xftales are shot on the XE1. I've sold big fineart prints taken with this camera.. Johan

Very nice review! My experiences are the same. I just bought an X-E1 to go with my X-E2s, X-E3 and X-H1. I just took my X-E1 and X-H1 on a short trip to the beach and marshes. I regard the X-E1 is my "playing around" camera. I totally agree that the price differential makes the X-E2/X-E2s a much better deal, especially since it seems X-Trans I cameras are becoming cult items.

That's awesome you have an X-E2s and X-E3. I eventually want to try both of those. Thanks for watching and commenting! Much appreciated.

Nice review! I'm looking forward to your review of the X-E2. I would think that the E2 plus the 27mm pancake would make for an awesome budget street kit.

This camera is fine with manual focus lenses - I like the TTArtisan set of 17/35/50 mm. Focus peaking is poor, but useable, on the XE-1 and fine on the XT-1. I prefer Monochrome on XE-1(G filter, -2/3 ExComp) and Color on the XT-1. XE-1 has the same sensor/processor as the X-Pro1, with a better EVF!

That's awesome Valdis. I need to try the TTArtisan lenses still. They look awesome. In terms of the X-E1, it is a great camera it's just not the one I would choose but that's the beauty of the Fujifilm lineup, there's pretty much something for everyone. And we all get to benefit from the same selection of great glass. Thanks for watching and for your input!

I think you raise valid points Craig. I'm lucky that in my market the older Fuji models can be had for what I consider no-brainer prices. My X-E1 was $135, my X-E2 was $195 & I just picked up a back-up X-E2 for $150. I don't do video so the latest models don't interest me & I find the autofocus speed on the X-E2 perfectly acceptable.for street photography. The X-E1 is for when I don't need speed & shooting static scenes, to my eye at least the output gives a slightly different look. If they are close is price in your market and it's an either or decision I would agree with you that the X-E2 would be a better buy. I really like the solid build quality of the X-E2, great all round improvement to the X-E1.

How do you activate the ficus peaking on this camera? Very informative video
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 2 года назад
Look in the menu, page number 5 I think. under "MF Assist". You should have 2 choices "STANDARD" and "FOCUS PEAKING". And for focus peaking you have HIGH or LOW. Experiment with these 2 and see what works best for you. Let me know if it works out. Thanks for watching!

This is like comparing the first Mac computer to one of the current models and saying that the performance is slow compared to the newer generations..even on the Xpro1 people talk about how slow it is but it’s about the images it produces, not how snappy it is or isn’t
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 2 года назад
You're exactly right. And would you recommend anyone buy the first Mac computer over a modern Mac if the prices were close? I wouldn't and that's my main point. This camera was being hyped way too much and it drove up prices almost near or sometimes higher than the X-E2 which is crazy. If the prices is equal there's no way I'm choosing this over the X-E2.
@PhiggysDOTcom
@PhiggysDOTcom 2 года назад
It a old first generation camera what did you expect performance wise ?I purchased one recently and I’m really pleased with the out put from it. The XH1 is several generations newer and I would expect it to perform better! Xpro 1 XE1 and XM1 all share this first generation sensors Xtrans came after these and along with new features that have been added You get what you pay for and at today’s prices it’s pretty much a bargain IMO Admittedly I’ve been shooting for over 60years and compared with film cameras back in 50s it’s a. Massive step forward. I think the positives far out way the negatives you have highlighted
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 2 года назад
I completely understand what you're saying. I like the output of this camera as well btw. But recently the prices of these on the used market haven't been much of a bargain IMO. I bought the X-E1 & X-E2 around the same time for nearly the same price. I wanted to compare them myself since they were priced so close together. That comparison is where my list of "negatives" come from. Yes, compared to cameras that came before it and compared to a film workflow it's definitely a massive step forward. But some people online have said it's better than the X-E2 and newer cameras. I wanted to see for myself. IMO there's nothing this offers that the X-E2 doesn't. I love the image quality of both but the advantages of the X-E2 are worth it for me. So this all stems from the current hype this camera has received and the subsequent raising of used prices based on that hype. It's a great camera but I don't think people need to sell their X-Trans II or X-Trans III cameras to chase the hype of this camera. If it was priced lower, and it may it up getting there again, I'd sing its praises all day. That's awesome you have one. And I'm happy it's working out well for you. Like I said in the video that's all that matters anyway right? I truly appreciate the feedback! Thanks for watching and I hope you'll watch some of my future videos as well.

i traded my used xc50-230mm for this but haven't got it yet. I plan to use this with my ttartisans50mm that has been laying around for quite a while. do you think i got ripped off? haha
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 2 года назад
I don't think you got ripped off. It's always hard to get a completely even trade. You're getting a camera you want which is never a bad thing. That TTArtisans lens seems really cool so it sounds like you're going to have a pretty cool combo! Let me know when you get it and how it works out.

X-Trans II (X-T1 and onwards) has much better, coloured focus peeking. When I take my X-T1 for a ride, I almost always has some vintage, manual focussing lens on it. So I can't complain how awful autofocussing speed is on that camera 😁 But it works, I almost never miss focus if focus peeking is set on red durning the day, and blue durning the night (to get contrast opposed to yellow tungsten lights)...
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 2 года назад
I completely agree! I love the X-T1. I've reviewed that camera, and most recently the X-E2. Both X-Trans II cameras and both are great. I love using MF lenses on them because of the solid focus peaking. And of course the image output is fantastic. Thanks for watching and for your feedback !

I still am discovering the secrets of my Fuji X-E2. It's very important to "dominate" a body camera, and spend money in glass. Of course, I'd like to have a Fuji X-T4 or X-H1 with Ibis and excellent EVF, , but you have to be happy with what you have and you can create very nice things. I'm glad I did not buy a more high end or latest model camera. It allowed me to go deep in mine and as I said, I discovered the hiden potential on it. So I keep learning and have fun. Not the best Fuji but who cares? It also has it's advantages over the priciest models. May be in a year ot two I will buy a second body, but meanwhile I have fun and the lenses I'm buying are gorgeous and will fit the future body. Anyway, I will keep the X-E2 as a second camera, don't sell your old cameras, they have any comercial value but they have real value in life. Learn with it, buy very nice lenses like 12mm Samyang, 17mm ffuji, 7artisans, etc. It will give you pleasure and joy. Cheers.

I love your attitude Francisco! You're absolutely right, you have to make the most of what you got. And the X-E2 is an awesome camera btw!! I'm working on my review of that one. That will be out in the next few weeks. I wouldn't think twice about recommending that to anyone wanting an amazing value and a keeper of a camera that kicks out awesome images. Thank you so much for watching and for your feedback!

Interesting. I bought it new with the 18-55 for 650 bucks. Two years later you could easily buy a used body only for 150. It’s my impression that most people buy it today because of the film-like b&w which (sooc) is more obvious than for later trans versions.
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 3 года назад
It doesn’t stay in stock long at the used stores I usually check but when it does it is priced pretty close to the X-E2. I’ve been using both or a month or two. Both are great but from what I can tell the images from the X-Trans II sensor is as film like as the X-Trans I which makes the X-Trans II cameras preferable to me compared to this, because of the other improvements on top of IQ. I think many people are going to think I’m dogging on this camera but that’s not the case, my point is I just don’t see the point in choosing this over the X-E2 the way they’re currently priced. Now, if the prices did drop again to $150 or so, then that’s a different story all together. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

The Xtrans sensor is the only reason this camera has value. Not that its a bad camera . Its just 1 of 3 with the original Xtrans
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 2 года назад
The cost is definitely due to the demand for the first X-Trans sensor that has become sort of a cult classic. It's a fantastic camera but I fell in love with the X-E2. Hopefully I can try an X-E2s soon too. Thanks for watching and commenting Frank!

I agree with you on the price. Fuji prices in general seem quite inflated, but as an owner that is good I suppose. I think for the quality and similarities, Fuji gear should sell about like Olympus on the used market, but they don't. Supply and demand in action. I love both systems, but for cheap fun, Olympus is it.
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 3 года назад
Interesting point about the pricing of used Olympus gear. I haven’t tried any of the digital Olympus stuff. Maybe one day soon I’ll get around to giving it a shot. I’m a huge fan of the Fujifilm system for sure but I was curious about what this camera & sensor had to offer. It was definitely fun to try out. Thanks for watching and commenting!

you are right but now 2022 x-t1 is very cheap and x-pro1 is not so cheap so x-e1 can be a good bargain for who need x-trans I sensor. I have x-pro1, x-e1, x-t1, x-t3 and yes thoose with x-trans I are so slow! but what a dreamy film images... and jpeg are a way better

Now that I have the X-E1, I tend to agree. I already had the X-E2s, X-E3 and X-H1. I'm enjoying the X-E1, but if someone is in the market for a good used Fuji the sweet spot is definitely the X-E2/X-E2s. I paid the same for my X-E2s that I paid for the X-E1, both are in excellent condition. I haven't had a chance yet to shoot the three X-E cameras side by side. I feel I notice a slight difference in color with the X-E1, but I really want to shoot a controlled comparison to see if there is actually that much difference. The hype has made X-Trans I cameras cult items, especially the X-Pro1. I've seen X-Pro1 prices skyrocket in the last couple of years.
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 2 года назад
I agree. There is some slight color difference between the X-Trans I vs X-Trans II but it's just a difference. It doesn't look any more film like or "special" to me. The X-E1 one is cool but not worthy of the cult status thing. Thanks for your input and adding to the conversation!
