A great little budget camera into the Fuji line of cameras. Of course it is an old camera but if you only care about the image quality at the low price and you are looking at Fuji cameras for their design and look, then this camera is a camera to consider as well. :-)

I love this camera. I used Fuji dslr’s for professional wedding photography. When I stopped do weddings professionally, I sold all my gear and bought an EX-1 for my travels. I’ve ended up shooting a few weddings with it, including 2 of our children, the images are fantastic and I have a 20”x30” print on the wall with great image quality

Wow, thank you for sharing your experience and stories, very much appreciated. The X-E1 is indeed a camera that is still able to produce great results when used properly. Also, congratulations to your children and thank you so much again for sharing your story! Hope you have a great time and have fun shooting :-)

It’s younger sibling, the X-E2s was my introduction to the world of Fuji, after 38 years of shooting Canon and I have not looked back. While the X-T2/3 and X-Pro3 are my daily drivers, the X-E2s is the rig that I bring for fun, family events, and occasional street shooting, with an 18-55 permanently fixed. I am happy to hear that an X-E4 is apparently in the works. Love the X-E line of cameras.

Thank you for sharing your story, very much appreciated! Yes, the X-E line of cameras are really nice and fun to use yet produces great image quality at such a compact size. Great pictures, David, with an awesome camera. I love my little X-E1. I use mine as a dedicated B&W shooter, paired with vintage lenses. I'm so glad that I picked up this little gem waaaaaaaaaaay before the Fujifilm hypetrain took off and prices went absolutely bananas. You're actually the first person who's paid less than I did for his camera (I picked up mine in 2017 for 150€). I have an affinity for the old(er) Fujifilm cameras. Of the six I own, the newest one is the X-T20, and I don't think that is likely to change anytime soon, unless I see a good deal on an X-T3 or X-Pro3.

I have the X-E1 and I love the look of the images. Certainly agree that the limitations actually make you think more, just like analog photography. Love shooting with it, you can see some images in my recent video from Kilimanjaro, where this was the only camera I brought for photography, and I shoot Hasselblad X2D normally which tell a lot about this cheap Fujifilm camera.

I'm falling more and more in love with mine (hence watching vids about it even though I own one :) ). I bought mine a couple years ago, also for about 100 Euros. I've now paired it with a couple of ttartisan fast, manual focus primes - a 17mm f1.4 and a 50mm f1.2. That's another 180 Euros or something. So less than 300 Euros. I've _never_ enjoyed shooting digital more. I'm using it as a sort of halfway between film and digital. I shoot everything manual like I do with my Pentax MX that I learned photography on. But it's even easier on mirrorless with a live histogram and an approximation of your final image in the viewfinder. I shoot jpeg exclusively which massively reduces the time I spend tinkering in Lightroom (not dissing it, but I don't enjoy that stuff myself). The jpegs are great. The older sensor gives a very film-like look to my eyes. As you say, reducing your shooting options really focuses your concentration on specialising in what this wonderful little camera does so well.

Very nice review and lovely images. I just picked up an X-E1 to go with my X-E2s, X-E3 and X-H1. So far I'm very pleased and plan to do a comparison of the X-E's by taking the same photo with each. It is hard to put a finger on it, but I do feel as many do that there is a subtle difference between each generation of sensor/processor. I think these differences are most noticeable "on the edge", like high ISO and extreme dynamic range. I shoot JPEG + RAW, but normally use the RAW as a safety negative. SOOC JPEGs can look amazing!
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 2 года назад
Congrats on the camera, I am sure you'll be able to take some great images with the camera! I think you will notice more dramatic differences between the sensors and how the image processors processes the images (including RAW images) when you take them out to different environments like a contrasting golden-hour, blue hours, snow storm, dessert, etc. Then you'll see how different sensors also produces and deals with different colour tones as well as how sensitive they can be. :-) But thank you very much for watching and also for sharing your story, very much appreciated it! :-) I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

When this came out it was on level with the best full frames of the time, so quality-wise it has aged beautifully, especially with the firmware updates. Connectivity is a bit awkward by 2021 standards, with no bt/wifi and that weird usb cable but if one doesn't mind that stuff... got one last year along with the xc35 f2 and Im not regretting a single cent😁
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 года назад
Yeah, this camera is still a great camera that will still deliver amazing results in the right hands. :-) The look of the images coming out of this camera is also very special because being an "old" camera, the look of the sensor is very different from the more modern sensors which adds to that "special" feeling/look of the images coming out of the camera. Of course, if one does not need to have the wifi connectivity features, then this camera is also nice and very affordable as well. The colour depth is there and the colour reproduction is good enough as well. Furthermore, you still can do a lot with the RAW files coming out of the camera. :-) So I think that even until the end of the camera's life it would still produce more than good enough images and not just only in 2021. :-) That being said, I would not really dare to compare it with the Full frame cameras at the time~~ I would say, even the original canon eos 5d from 2008 is still delivering better colour reproduction, colour depth and processes the skin tones in a much more natural way than this camera will. But of course I haven't tried all of the full DSLRs, so I could be wrong~~ But thank you very much for sharing your story and experience, really appreciated it. Congrats on the camera by the way. :-) Wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

@@DavidCuhls youre welcome! I haven't tested them recently, but I remembere I used a 5D mk2 a couple of years ago and I remember it struggled a lot past iso3200, although it probably retained more color than the xe1... now that I am checking the dpreview comparison thing (with the xpro1 because there's no xe1) , it's really there with the mk2 at high iso, the 5d mk2 definitely gets worse at 6400... That xtrans sensor was really ahead its's time, and it has that peculiar look, probably because of the lower megapixels.. It's that sweet randomness in the noise no other sensor gives you😁

Spot on opinion. If you get this body for a good deal, it's better than than the entry level Fuji body such as X-M1. Personally I would prefer the IQ of X-A2 just because of its dynamic range.
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 года назад
Thank you and yes, I do agree with it being better option than the X-M1 (though I think Fuji discontinued the M line already, haha)... I haven't tried the X-A2 yet, so I cannot comment on that but just based on the image samples I've seen from the X-A2, it can also produce really nice images and the look also feels a bit more warm and cosy coming from the X-A2 than the X-E1 (but that is just from my subjective taste with limited experience with the X-A2). Thanks for watching and sharing your comment! Hope you stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

I was going to sell some of my old Fuji cameras but as soon as I grabbed them, I started playing around with them again and immediately remembered why I had fallen in love with them. I love ALL these buttons the X-E1 offers and for me they are perfectly at the right position. Nice video. For me, the beauty of these cameras is in their simplicity. As you say, the less you think about camera features, the more you think about the images. For a dinosaur from the film era, these cameras are perfect when combined with fully manual lenses. You can still access some of the most popular film simulations e.g. Classic Chrome and Acros, with a little work in post processing too.

I think you mean, Shoot without lens, not focus.. these early cameras with Raw came with a CD with Raw conversion software. Odd software, but you could get your tiff. That's how my XM-1 came. Now, stuck with an old Imac 10.6.8 system, but loaded with purchased Adobe, I can't access newer software for my T-2 Raw files. Can't even use Lightroom. So, back to jpegs. I will always remember my delight with my first X-M1 shots. But now, it's used as a lens place holder! Oh, by the way, focus peaking is a lot harder to see on these older bodies. But, still amazing that it works on a manual lens from the 70's!

what do you think about using this camera for product photography? I usually do a lot of portrait and food/product photography and I'm really interested about this one
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 года назад
It really depends on the type of product photography that you are shooting because it it's an outdoor action product photography for instance, then this camera might not be good solution due to the lower dynamic range of the camera, very slow autofocusing system, etc. (Because even certain food, product & portrait photography can still be in-action type of product/portrait photography, so it really depends) However, if your product photography is mainly in a controlled environment as well as not too demanding on the time, and without using/having too harsh light source, then I think that this camera will still deliver great results. The colours and files that comes out of the camera is still great and you still can process/work around many limitations. Furthermore, this camera is also great for portraits though it will take some time to set certain functions not because the camera is slow but because the functions are not set logically when compared to the modern cameras. That being said, the skin tones and colour reproduction is still great coming out of the sensor for taking portraits as well. So if this is more of your requirement type then this camera is more than good enough. It will take a little of time to get used to but I think that you will be able to produce amazing results with it. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask me at anytime, and I will do my best to answer. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting:-)

Thankyou. How is the EVF? I iknow it’s more pixels than the x-pro 1. I wanted to to use with my manual focus lenses and found the lower resolution of the X pro was not quite as enjoyable as more modern cameras. I think the X-E1 is 2.36m dots, which is the same as some of the newer models. How do you find it? Best wishes.
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 года назад
I personally don't use the EVF that often because I find it a little too small to use and the screen does a decent job in most cases. However, when I do use the EVF, I find that it lags a tiny bit and just not as smooth as using the LCD. Otherwise, the colour representation is still pretty good for its age and you can really rely on getting reliable representation of the colour tones as well as the exposures with the viewfinder (if you can overcome the small viewfinder and the little bit of lag and jitter at times)! :-)

For example, the unique look that you get out from this camera alone really outweighs the slow operations, somewhat weird menu layouts of this camera... So I guess that's why I didn't realised how many negative points I had while still really enjoying using this camera. :-) That being said, I thank you very much for watching and also commenting. :-) Really appreciated it. :-) I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

Yes, essentially it is a stripped down X-Pro1 with less features, slightly slower AF, not as well built and without that hybrid viewfinder. But it does still deliver on the image quality and kept all the essential features within this compact size body. :-)

I'm sorry but if you think the images from this camera are soft you have a suspect camera or I suspect the user is not using the camera correctly. I have never had an out of focus image with my XE1, it is a super camera, easy to use, the images are beautiful, they are sharp, the colours are so natural in whatever film simulation you use. You must have suspect camera!

No need to apologise, thank you for voicing out your concerns and it maybe right that I could have the "suspect camera" that you mentioned and/or it may very well be just user error from myself. I am just using the camera the similar, if not the same way as I would with any of my other Fuji cameras and also cameras from other manufacturers. If there is something that I could have done to make the images less soft, please feel free to educate me on that part but as a photographer, I want the camera to be able to cope with how I shoot and not me adapting to the camera because that is simply just a waste of time on my side. That has always been one of my basic principles for any cameras that I own~~ The film simulations does not matter that much to me because I shoot RAW for myself for the most part and Fuji does not apply the film simulations to their RAW files. That being said, stating that when using film simulations, the colours are "natural" is in it's own a self contradicting statement because once you apply the look, they no longer look natural like in real life. Again, thank you for voicing out your concerns. If I have a "suspect" camera then it is not my fault that the company fails to deliver the product in the beginning but also please enlighten me with further knowledge about it. If it's user error, then please also enlighten me with legit ways that I could improve the softness of the results. That being said, I didn't say that the "softness" was entirely bad either. Any way, my deepest apologies to you if my thoughts (which are of course, just my thoughts based on my experience and way of shooting) did not meet your expectations. I hope you have a good time, stay safe and have fun shooting :-)

i have fuji xe1 but i am disappointed with colors and overal pic quality, compared to both my Canoons 600d and 5dm2. I must admit built is excellent and form factor super good too. Nothing special about fuji colors for me, Canon all the way. But its still cheap and good camera

I like Canon colours the best too and I do know what you mean about the Fuji colours... It's also kind of hard to make them look accurate whether in camera or in post processing~~ But it is at the end of the day still a fun little camera to use in my opinion and will produce nice results that is unique for old Fuji cameras at times~~ :-) Thank you very much for watching and also for sharing your experience/opinion. Hope you have a great time and have fun shooting :-)

Things that need to be said, and corrections; *The top and bottom plates and inner framing is made of magnesium alloy. *This camera came out in 2012, that is something to consider as well as it being a Non pro camera without Pro tech specs. Comparing this to today's standards in features is misleading. *The tri-pod socket is offset to not effect the sensor box to keep small form factor. There are low cost Arca-swiss bottom brackets that will center the socket if needed plus add 1/4" for your pinky to grip. *It's a 16mp first gen X-Trans APS-C sensor *Video was Never a thing for the X-E line, it is a last resort convenience feature. Nobody bought this camera for video or action shooting. *Moire is not as bad as you make it sound, although it is a X-Trans RGB array as opposed to standard Bayer array, and it is without a low pass filter. The benefit is sharper detail and cleaner signal and a unique (film-like) look which I can attest to. In my nine years of owning this camera the image quality is amazing considering the old tech and lower MPs. Just keep your ISOs low, know your shutter speeds, know your lighting and exposures and this camera will be awesome. Images I made from this camera are still some of my favorites and have printed a few with no issues as long as you shoot RAW. Jpegs will bake in your color settings and sharpening as with any other camera. Sometimes when I go into Lr and pull up my library I am surprised that a lot of my 5 star rated photos came from the X-E1. Also the X-E1 is a great choice if you want to experiment with old adaptable manual lenses. I'll sometimes put on 40 or 50 year old glass on it and get some unique creative images especially with the film simulations.

Thank you very much for the corrections as well as adding the extra information that I was not aware of and also thank you for sharing your story and experience, very much appreciated. I do agree that this particular this camera will still produce really amazing results if the photographer knows what he/she is doing and also if they don't push the camera too much. I too like the files from the X-E1 very though I think there is still somewhat of a serious problem with the colour depth. The colour reproduction and the colour is good but if they could have at the very least keep up with the colour depth even for 2012, that would have been great. But this is just what I think and I know that it is very subjective. Also, I think that despite the sharp image quality that the sensor produces, there is still a little bit of lack of details and compare to my other older DSLRs, this camera is still pretty bad at moire and aliasing. That being said, this camera is still a good camera and a pleasure to shoot with at the end of the day. The form factor makes this camera also a joy to carry around as well as travel with. Furthermore, for the price that you can get it today, this camera still offers so much quality and the joy of shooting with this camera is certainly priceless. :-) Thank you so much again for the extra information, corrections as well as sharing your experience! Hope you have a good time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

The X-E1 could have been a very good camera, but R&D of Fujifilm in Japan made a camera which needs more than 50 improvements.
