Thank you for this awesome and recent, up-to-date video! I recently purchased an X-H1 (Still in the mail) after looking long and hard at an X-T3, but couldn't find one for the right price or one that suited what I could do. While I do wish in some ways I were getting an X-T3, your review is really nice to hear how capable and still modern this camera is. Can't wait to use it instead of my Canon 7D haha!

As always with your videos your calm cool and articulate manner makes them a joy to watch. I have the XH-1 and recently shot a lantern parade with it in a place called Ulverston in the UK. High ISO and wide-open, whilst there was some noise the stills are perfectly acceptable.

You’re in many ways the best camera gear reviewer I’ve watched. I bought a used xh1 w 18 -50 kit for 900 a year ago hoping to start a photography service. It hasn’t taken off yet. I’m still learning the camera but I love it. It’s really an all around enjoyable camera to use. I’m sure it’s a pleasant surprise for you to hear the xh2 is on the way. I’m really looking forward to it. Thanks for this interesting video. Great job!

Thank you, I really appreciate your update on these older cameras which cover most people's needs easily and are very affordable on top of it. Latest often rimes with best, especially in this fast changing world, but it doesn't mean it's what we need. I still have fun using my X-Pro1 or the original X100 and the X-T1 has been a great inspiration for me lately. They're not as good as my X-Pro3 or X100V but each one of them has something special that makes me feel good and inspired and motivated

Thanks for the revisit of the X-H1. I remember holding one at Samys Camera in Hollywood when it was first released. I passed on buying one, but when they had the discontinue sale and I could buy new with grip for $1,000, I couldn't pass it up. It is the perfect complement to my X-E cameras and I use it with my bigger lenses. I've also enjoyed delving into video with it.

Well my fellow man. I was thinking about revamping my gear this week. And just seconds before I was deciding on switching to full frame, nikoncanonsonyetc... I tumbled upon your, again instructive video. I backed away from that FF demon and refound my longing to get me a an Xh1. You just helped make up my mind, and sell some other Fuji stuff to sponsor my old dream. Getting my hands on this beast, I couldn't afford at the time. Secondhands prices are dropping as we speak, at least in the country I live, Belgium, next to the Netherlands. My near mint XH1copy is shipped my way as I write this. . So, deep bow. I thank you very much for your wise words. Again.

Thanks for the revisit video! X-H1 is my main camera for my channel. Even though, I'm looking forward to next Gen for the improve battery life and updated video specs. But mainly I would LOVE smooth 24p/30p (even better 60p) video out of the USB-C port for streaming as a webcam. Other than that, I'm really happy with the X-H1 now, and am in no rush for an upgrade.

Another great video Maarten, thanks. My X-H1 has prompted me to sell off almost all of my other gear (collected over the years) mainly because of the IBIS, I could not live with out it now. I think also that the idea of an X-H2 sound great but Fuji has gone and blocked and upgrades because of the other X series models so don't hold your breath.. look forward to your next video.

hi, may i ask how is the quality of tje video better than an xt30? i have an xt30 and im looking to do more serious video work. started tp look at the xh1 cause of the price but stopped cuz of the older sensor and processor. but you said otherwise, can you tell me?
@MaartenHeilbron

@@ahmadaqil301 I'm not sure that the quality of the video is better - they're very similar. However, what's better is the ability of the camera to record video without overheating, and the ability to control the settings more easily.

I sold my X-H1 recently, because I have an X-T3 and X-T4. But sometimes I miss it. There was something special about it, and still is. I know the gentleman who bought it from me is really enjoying it. I’ve yet to find a camera system that is more fun than Fuji is to shoot both stills and video with. I’m glad you made this updated video, because I think it’ll give people a good understanding of why the X-H1 may be the right “new” camera for them since the prices are hard to beat.

This has been my main workhorse camera for several years now and I still love it even though it weighs as much as an actual workhorse with the battery grip and a longer lens. I wouldn't trade it for anything but another XH1 or maybe an XH2 someday as long as they don't continue the trend of removing useful dials and buttons.

Thanks, Maarten. I have the XS10 on order, but suddenly I realized I’d overlooked the XH1. Quick trip to see what you had to say about it. Well, from there it was another quick trip to KEH and I got me one "97-99% as new," for $770, a steal. I will still try out the SX10, but like you I love the classic Fuji buttons. Thanks again.

Finally, here I am, X-H1 user in 2021 for stills and video. Interesting content, as always 👍🏻👍🏻 difficult to find a proper upgrade considering the price in 2019 with vertical booster, around 800/900€. Today still difficult to find a complete camera as upgrade like this for the same price: ibis, hi res evf, wr and pro construction, top LCD, decent grip size, multiple dials, joystick, etc.. Plus a vertical grip in the bundle. Maybe not going to appena anymore in the future this kind of offer, great product at a superb price... Ps I personally not find any problem with video and face detection (I wear glasses), reliable for a vlog style video with latest firmware 99%. Agree about "odd" battery behavior, recording stops.

Maarten thanks for this informative and clearly explained video. I love your channel anyway but appreciate not having your videos interrupted by unwanted adverts. I want IBIS and was thinking of trading in my beloved X-T3 for the X-T4. You’ve got me thinking now! An X-H1 would be less expensive and help fund another prime lens. I need to research what I would loose from the X-T3 unless you could list them. The rumours are that the next Fuji X camera (X-H2)? will be 42mpx. Do we really need 42mpx except to crop even more or is it just marketing hype to the uninformed? Best wishes for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

I bought one used about 1.5 years ago because I wanted to explore IBIS, and I enjoy having it in my toolbox. I love the viewfinder and a variety of other features i discovered, for example the high speed HD video, or the yellow focus peaking. The latter turned out to be a killer feature for a guy with protan color blindness, so useful that I swapped out my x-t2 with an x-t3 just for the sake feature. I could probably get by without the x-h1 but I sure like having it handy as an option.

Thank you for this vid Mr. H. A nice "happy birthday" like appreciation vid for a great under-appreciated camera. I'd like to remind those reading/watching that if you don't... or won't ...actually use (or notice even) features which have been marketed as "standard" for the newer models, then these features are meaningless as they hold no practical value. Don't let ANYONE tell you that the X-H1 isn't a remarkable tool and amazing piece of useful craftsmanship. What it lacks in modern specs it greatly makes up for in personality, robustness and "fun appeal" user experience. I find it almost comical that casual shooters get caught up and sucked in to the 8 vs 10bit argument...The 10 bit will ONLY be noticeable if you grade heavily. More or less. (And don't get me started on the difference between a few megapixels haha...sure...cropping can be nice, but a 16meg look (X-T1) produces a unique look which may be preferred over say an X-H1/T3 etc. I own several Fujis; along with too many to mention oldie but goodies, and even out cycle touring always pack both my X-T1 and X-H1 for different applications. ) Anyway, like you, the top display isn't as useful to me as was the exposure compensation dial which I love on my X-T1 / X-T2 ...and I wish ALL of these models had a feature to allow one to LOCK the drive collars which can be knocked out of place if you do "run and gun" quick action shooting, but all in all this camera is an absolute powerhouse. Also, I wonder if some users who complain about the IBIS have it set properly or at least have the firmware updates(?) The IBIS on my model has been a game-changer in what, how and when I'm able to shoot. I also encourage those watching this video to take the time to watch your other videos on the X-H1 as your thorough reviews, tips, setup advice and knowledge will save them many a headache and hours upon hours of trying figure out or understand issues on their own. Peace and thanks again!

Good and mandatory review on this not so popular camera which is a pity of course. Probably one of the most ergonomic camera with the grip. It reminds me some film professional camera such as the EOS1. All the needed dials are present, the top screen is really a plus, it s really a pleasure to use it as you don t need to go in a lot in the menus and what a look : perfect combination of vintage look and modern technology. A little heavy but really a pleasure to use it with big lenses. Even my 16-80 f4(which is less compact than my previous 18-55) is more adequate on it than on my x-t2, and of course same for my 55-200. A really under estimated camera that I will keep as long as it will work.

Hi Maarten, thanks for this great video. I currently have an X-S10 which I like very much however, for reasons unknown yet, I have started to check different bodies. The X-H1 popped up as an option, mainly because of its weather sealed body and the old look in terms of dials. You mentioned that in newer cameras there are more film simulations. These still can be added during post-processing in Capture One if I shoot raw, right? Although I would miss it in the camera, if it can be added later then I don't see that much of an issue here. You have a very good review of the X-S10 as well. If you had to choose between the two, which one would you choose and why? Thanks in advance and all the best!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 2 года назад
I don't know about Capture One, but if those are post processing options in that app, then I guess it would work. Using Fujifilm X-RAW, it's not possible as it uses the in-camera processor. Depends on your needs, the X-S10 is good, but for my hands, my video needs and for the external controls, I prefer the X-H1. I"ve decided that although the X-S10 is better, those features are not part of my practice. Thanks for your kind words and wishes.

After trying a bunch of cameras ( several Canon crop and full frame, Sony A7ii and a Fuji X-T20) I finally have a combo of the XH1 and X100T. The XH1 is the perfect workhorse due to its many features, ruggedness and comfortable grip, while the X100 is my fun camera. It depends, with face detection during video and even with 3rd party AF lens the X-H1 never miss focus on me, of course you need to stay inside the central PDAF area. On other scenario I agree, it's not the fastest expecially for tracking, but it's based on the older xt2 in fact, similar tech.

As a hand held video shooter I loved the X-H1---it has legendary status in my household. Why did I sell it? IBIS---it was sticky---and I lost all too many shots because the IBIS would lag behind my movements. But I loved the image, and no camera I've owned since has a better grip and feel---it's a joy to hold and shoot. IBIS on the XT4 is better---they finally fixed the "stickiness"---but it's still nothing to write home about---unless you're also shooting with Fuji lenses that are also stabilized. That was a non-starter for me, because I like to shoot fully manual using linear focus---only possible on one Fuji lens I know of, and it is not stabilized. Alas, I'm yet one of the many still awaiting the X-H2---There's plenty of room for improvement on the X-T4 --- Canon level AF and Panasonic level IBIS---all that should be in range n 2021, along with 6k....that said, I hope against hope that will be found on a shining new X-H2. We'll see.

Can't wait to receive them. Never loved my Nikon's blues and greens. It was a great camera, but so too are the Fuji's from all the great reviews. Interesting. Did you ever try making adjustments to modify the picture controls to get the results you wanted? The D750 has a wider range of colour management controls than most. @@MaartenHeilbron it was the out of camera colors in RAW that disappointed. I could adjust in LR, but found the colors out of my GX85 micro four thirds much more natural and appealing in blues and greens. Same in my old Canon T5i. I focused a lot on adjusting them in my edits, but got tired of the constant attention required to two primary colors in landscape photography. Skies and foliage/grass just looked horrible so I spent a lot of time color grading to eliminate that look. In jpgs, it was just more of the same so I didn't use them.

I love my X-H1, for all it's flaws, it handles so nicely. Mine is a little banged up, being bought used and abused. It's a little flaky, sometimes needing a shutter press to wake up after being switched on, or having a hard time finding a shutter speed in aperture priority until it can compose itself. And of course sometimes just randomly dying and needing the battery pulled to reset it. Probably half because it's a Fuji and half because of the abuse. As you hinted at, I'm very worried that any X-H2 will share the design of the current GFX's and I really don't understand why Fuji is going that way when the controls and handling are one of the bigger reasons why you would chose one over a competing brand.

The ergonomics of the X-H1 are absolutely perfect for me, best camera ever (and I've owned dozens of SLR's, DSLRs since 1980). There is no discernable image quality difference IMO and I shoot stills, not video. I shoot fast moving events (street parades, people dancing and moving etc) - I lost so many shots because of its performance in AFC, it was actually quite terrible. I have two X-T3's now and they are marvellous. I never miss any photos now because of poor AFC. I do miss the IBIS, but I can work around that. A shame they didn't quite get the AFC right on this camera, for it would have been a keeper.

The one thing I like about this setup for me is that I maintain different power sources as I shoot throughout the day so I don’t have to worry about too many extra batteries for either system. The X-H1 has come down pretty significantly in price. I’m not after the latest and greatest but do think my video side could use an upgrade… Love the channel! I keep eyeing this camera as a possible replacement to my dying X-T1. It's a surprisingly difficult decision to choose my next camera as the X-T1 was my first foray into a "real camera" after owning cheap plastic little film cameras for a long time. The X-H1 has many things I love about it. But with the X-T3 starting to ship after the new year priced at $1099 it's going to be hard to pass that camera up. I just don't think my X-T1 will make it till then. Do I go with an X-E2 or X-E3 to hold me over for now, with the expectation of it becoming my grab and go secondary camera? 2022 should see Fujifilm begin announcing the next generation of their lineup which will give me time to really figure out what I want as I'm still at the early stages of figuring out my needs and desires in photography. Normally, I'd just wait and see what the next generation coming has to offer. But the state of my X-T1 brings some urgency to this whole thing. And as useful as RU-vid is for checking out cameras, it's also quite the rabbit hole to go down. I appreciate your revisit to this camera today as it's come at the perfect time to remind me to slow down and center myself and really assess what I want before rushing to pick up something out of haste.

I don't know what / how/where you shoot, but if you are on a tight budget and want an awesome camera which punches far beyond its weight class, so to speak, I would consider a good-used X-T2. I say this because I own both an X-T1, X-H1 and truly miss the X-T2 ....in many ways it was the "Goldilocks" camera. i.e great performance, same sensor as X-H1, noticeable and practical upgrades from the X-T1, not too heavy, same vertical mode screen flip design as X-H1 etc. just no IBIS. I love all three of these cameras and still use two of them daily. (sorry you are having issues with your X-T1 by the way) but honestly, if not for the IBIS I've no doubt I could get by just FINE for 90% of my needs with an X-T2 and I'm a serious shooter. I do appreciate the most robust mount on the X-H1 for heavier lenses - handy when adapting vintage glass- as well as some other upgrades such as the soft shutter release and ability to save settings between still and video (in silent movie mode) but goodness, that X-T2 still had the exposure comp dial which I loved, a beautiful graphite silver version, and...and...well.......can you tell that I MISS it? haha. I have the sharpness turned all the way down.

@@MaartenHeilbron I did not mean sharpness, I meant out-of-focus. The camera in your hand is more in focus than your face. If that was your intention, than that's alright with me, but is distracting nonetheless.

So far in your experience, do you experience frequent battery bloating issues with the NP-W126S battery? I had a couple of them bought at different times, and they started bloating in less than 2 years of round-robin usage. In some severe cases, it is stuck within the battery chamber and need to use some gaffer tapes to pull them out
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
I have never had this happen, and I've used a bunch of batteries both in camera and in the grip. Are you using genuine Fujifilm batteries?
@_LYH_
@_LYH_ Год назад
Yup all genuine batteries, with laser engraved batch/serial numbers... As it bloats, it can spin freely either on its printed sides... and they are much more expensive per Watt-hour compared to other makes
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
Odd. Have you contacted Fujifilm or your dealer?
@_LYH_

Very likely the dealer will say it's wear and tear, and batteries are sold without warranty 😂

There is some warranty, it's always time dependent. However, this sounds like a defect, so I would contact Fujifilm.

@MaartenHeilbron

The X-H1 does not have an internal ND filter.

Fuji was onto a great thing with this one, quality was outstanding, ergonomics were better than anything else from Fuji even today but it just suffered from bad AF in video mode. As there was not going to be a predecessor to this, I left Fuji.

I think you meant successor? Anyway focus in the X-T3 and X-T4 are much improved.

Is there a negative reason the price has dropped as it has? I was looking at the Z5 but it’s far slower at 4.5 fps. This seems like the Goldilocks camera for an amateur like me - the files aren’t too massive, has image stabilization and focus peaking. The only thing it lacks is a full frame sensor.
@MaartenHeilbron

I'm not sure I have an explanation. It is on the larger size and recent models have some technologies that supersede it, but I don't see any real negatives. As I said, I own one, I use it regularly.

Happy with the bargain I got just days ago with everthing. But, now I'm looking at needing 3 batteries, all ending with S. Don't trust ebay battery sellers selling something that doesn't end with "s",but they say "replaces" both types. But now I'm looking at Fuji S batteries, and they're going for 60 EACH. Any thoughts on anything as good but cheaper? If not, I'll buy one a month to ease the pain...

Instead of batteries, buy the battery grip. Even without batteries it enables you to use USB power from battery or power outlet.
