Awesome gear list. I start March 31st. I finished section hiking the AT last year and am going to attempt a thruhike this year to celebrate my upcoming 70th birthday. I have my gear list pretty much dialed in, but I am starting at Amicalola Falls with a very light, highly modified wood stove in addition to my homemade alcohol stove. I'm having trouble deciding whether to start with my backpacking guitar (4 lbs.) or not. I hated carrying it on my longer section hikes, but it has been with me on every hike for 10 years. It gets hung up on rhododendrons and blowdowns. I use a hammock and camo DCF tarp and am starting off with a bear canister because there will be so many people that I will probably have trouble finding a good branch to hang my food bag. My average load out of town has been 32 pounds with the guitar, so I will probably drop the food canister and pick up the guitar at the halfway point, when the herd thins out. I hope to see you on the Trail. "Tinker" from Rho-Dyland, as we say it. 😁👍

Thanks for the video! How exciting doing it again. Lately I have been missing the AT and might do it a second time at some point. Nice gear, I think the compression sack is quite the gamble. In my opinion a pack liner isn't optional for the AT...but you can always add one I guess. I just always try to keep my down dry and if there is any ingress, your bag will soak it up over the course of hours. Also don't like the ball it forms, seems unwieldy and space inefficient. But I hope it works for you and it's great that you keep on trying new things!

Great gear list, which I'm sure will serve you well. A word of warning on the front pocket of your rain jacket. Those pockets do gather sweat inside when you're working hard, so be careful what you put in them. My phone did that no-charge, water-detected-in-port thing when I last put it in that front pocket. I'd suggest you keep your phone in that dedicated pouch on your pack. Happy trails, and look forward to your vlogs ... 🙂

Those v-toe socks are awesome for camp flip flops. That would solve a major problem for me. I always wanted to use just the cheap, between-the-toes flip flops, but I like to wear socks. I bought the Xero shoe sandals that are a lot like Teva but more minimalistic. But, they come in at 8 ounces and cost a lot of money. I'm might try these this year with a cheap set of flip flops. You're dialed in kid, good luck this year and happy trails!

Taylor, " Best of luck" with your 2nd *Through hike" of the Appalachian Trail* My prayers 🙏🙏 are with you for a very successful hike! What role will your "husband" play on these next 4 to 5 months? Also what type of work does he do? Besides moral support, I bet you will miss him, that's for sure! Given the weather, terrian etc., roughly how many miles & hours do hike a day? I'm now 78 yrs. old and still hike. I've hiked many "sections" of the AT over the years. Mostly here in the North East, Bear Mt., NY (the bridge is lowest elev. on the AT), near were I live. I've also hiked sections in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire but never got to hike Maine! I done Mt Washington (at least 10 times) and other mountains in New Hampshire over the years and love it up there, just a long ride to get up there Have fun and keep your videos coming through out your hike.

This is my favorite part Taylor. So wish I had time to be out there on the trail. Frustrating I have so many responsibilities and they keep taking my weekend's away at work...I'm geared up for a good trip so my focus is getting the time and planning the trip out...Just feel like there is so much I'm missing time is precious to me. Hope your very happy so many stories and so many good people on trail. Sending all the best take care Jim Hope you hike the world! ❤ Would like to know how you find time and how exactly you plan a trip out. Do you use a Garmin in reach to help guide or something else. My first trip didn't get far but learned fast the inability to communicate on my phone. So bought a GPS/satellite device to communicate.

Hey someone else using the Peregrine 11's! haha, I have the same color ones for about a year now... used 8's before. I always feel like Saucony is a best kept secret as far as trail runners. I have a friend who got a pair of Altra LP's and went from "I love these" to "I hate these and I'm never wearing them again" after 3 trips. I guess the zero drop / support really was hurting his feet.

Hi Taylor! Can you please explain why you choose to hang a food bag vs using a bear canister? Do there tend to be more lockers/boxes for food bags at shelters, or is hanging the more popular option? My doctor recommended Saucony sneakers for my plantar fasciitis over 10 years ago. Then I purchased the same type and colors (!) you had on your first thru hike. Wore them for section hikes on AT and everyday walking the dog. I only use darn tough socks and I have never had a blister or foot pain! They may be a little heavier but the tread is outstanding in snow and mud. I just got my third pair for my upcoming section hike of Georgia. Thank you for sharing.

I use the Peregrine 11 for hiking. The only change I have made for my upcoming section hike is to get a half size larger to give me more toe room on downhills. Currently for everyday, I am wearing the Cohesion 13 cause I don’t need the “snow” tread on pavement or around the house. Since I started wearing Saucony I have not had any feet issues or plantar fasciitis and my feet are 66 years young! Happy feet, happy hiker! 😊

I don't have any real hiking experience at all but I so enjoyed following your last thru hike! I can't wait for you to start and I hope you have many wonderful experiences 🌻❤️ I don't know if you're comfortable talking about this, but what about female hygiene on the trail? Whenever I see vlogs by female hikers I'm wondering how they're dealing with this issue, both the "practical" and the emotional stuff.
@mendyviola
@mendyviola Год назад
Some women, if they are young enough, just stop their periods for the trek using birth control pills in a certain way. Talk to your doctor/OB. Some others use menstrual cups or reusable pads that are washable. There are lots of options.
@majajackson777
@majajackson777 Год назад
@@mendyviola sure, hormonal contraception is the easiest option, but some might not want to (or can't) use it. I think the cup might be the easiest one after that but still, I can imagine it's not always hygienic or easy to do in the woods. Depends on where on the trail you are I guess and whether there're towns/facilities nearby etc. Pain management might not be easy either.. I don't know, I was just wondering about it while watching Nahamsha's vlogs.
@mendyviola
@mendyviola Год назад
@@majajackson777 I can’t personally use hormonal contraceptives at my age and health history. I personally don’t like the sterility (or not) of cups, so I use the silver infused re-usable pads myself. I use them at home and out camping and on the trail. It adds some bulk and weight to your pack, but for me at least it’s the best option. I haven’t experienced period pain in years, but would presume that having some medications on hand to handle it and scheduling in slow/down/rest days would help.
