You requested it. Here's an in-depth guide on how I do full body tracking in VR with a Microsoft Xbox Kinect using Driver4VR and LIV. For about less than $50 USD, the Kinect is probably the cheapest method for full body tracking out there. Yes~ when connected to a gaming PC, however 👍 But there are other ways to achieve mixed reality on the Oculus without a PC. Try Googling for "oculus mixed reality"

Great video; picked up the v2 sensor for $20. It is typically a little more expensive than the V1 Kinect. The V2 Kinect typically costs $40, PC adapter $20, software $20 for a total of $80. The V1 Kinect can be purchased for $15-$20, the adapter is $8, and the software is $20. For a total investment of $43-$48. Either way it is definitely more affordable than any other tracking solution.

the v1 kinects are 5 bucks or less at goodwill all the time, v2 is around 10-20 if you find them.

@@sleet_gaming Goodwill is a great place for this kind of stuff. Bought so many older consoles for dirt cheap there. Also just to throw this out there, I tried this and in VRchat my charector was just stuck in a tpose, I had to google how to fix it, don't think you mentioned that.

so i only have the beat saber version on the quest, do you know if its possible to do this tracking using that? or does it need to be on the steam beat saber because it runs on steamvr

Hey there! It'll definitely work with the Quest if you're using the Link cable and SteamVR. I'm not aware of any way to doing full body tracking when using the Quest as a standalone unfortunately.

Hey, sorry for the late response! Sure, I can make a video about that, but in the meantime checkout OBS and the OpenVR plugin for OBS. If your computer isn't powerful enough, it may struggle to do both VR and recording. I sometimes have that problem, and in such cases I use a second computer.

Hey Kindo! I have not, just the Kinect skeleton tracking. Are you talking about what's shown in this linked video? so I was able to use my kinect 2.0 for FBT last year with Driver4VR on Vrchat, and it worked pretty well. recently when I tried it; it tracked horribly. to the point that it was unusable. not much changed about my set-up if anything at all. is there anything you could suggest that I try to fix this?

Sorry to hear. Not sure what I can recommend without more information. How well does it track when calibrating in Driver4VR? You may want to try cleaning the lens and positioning it so that it sees your whole body. Other than that, maybe update every piece of software, reinstall Kinect drivers, etc.

Do I need to download LIV even if I don't plan on streaming anything? I just bought a Vive Pro and wireless adapter, really don't want to shell out more for full body.

If you're not planning to stream/record yourself, then nope, you do not need to download LIV. Driver4VR is pretty much all you need for full body tracking for in-game purposes (like in VRChat).

Do you have the Kinect 360? From my experience, the camera needs to see your entire body for it to track, so about 5-6 feet minimum distance. I'm using Driver4VR 5.4.0.2, and it works fine for me so long as I'm far enough away.

A Windows Mixed Reality headset? If so, then yes, that will work (I use a WMR headset myself). Pretty much any headset that works with SteamVR will work.

Not to my knowledge. The LIV and Driver4VR software are associated with Steam, so I believe you'll have to play the Steam versions of games as well. But for Oculus, you may want to look into Oculus Mixed Reality Tools. You can get something similar out of that.

Hello! You'll need one of the proprietary power supply cables (00:46 for Xbox One Kinect and 00:50 for Xbox 360 Kinect). The cables connect to both your PC via USB and an AC plug. They might need to be purchased separately (like on eBay).

Simultaneously, as in use one to track from the front and the other to track from the back? I know that dual Kinect tracking is supposed to be a feature in the future, but I haven't kept up with it unfortunately. If you find out the answer, I would love to know the answer!

@@sleet_gaming now that I started using LIV, it doesn't seem like 2 Kinects is an option. I haven't seen it discussed as a future release either. That's not to say it hasn't been discussed of course. The closest I found was this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bgn5B-B4hqA.html So it's achievable via ipisoft, which hopefully works well enough to justify the astronomical price tag. Thanks for making this video, BTW. Honestly it's one of the best I've seen on this stuff. You give a clear rundown without overwhelming or oversimplification.

Thank you for this. Both driver4vr and kinectvr end up quitting on me a few min into the game. Any suggestions. The program doesn’t quit. It just stops tracking the feet and waist

What CPU and GPU are you using? If you're seeing more than 70% utilization on either when running your setup, you may need to lower some settings or upgrade hardware. For Driver4VR, are you running the paid version? The free version will log you off after a few minutes.

i haven't touched these in a couple years unfortunately, but what is it you're trying to do? The problems I see are: (1) i am not yet aware of a way to make two Kinects working at the same time; and (2) the amount of CPU/GPU resources it will take to run two Kinects would be substantial and would require a very powerful computer.

It will definitely work with Quest 2 w/ Oculus Link, but I am not sure about the default mode. You may also want to check out Oculus Mixed Reality Capture Tools, which only requires your Quest 2 and a simple webcam.

All of the software is Windows only. You could try Bootcamp and load Windows on your Apple laptop, but I couldn't say how well that would perform. And yes, as far as the setup in this video, you do need a VR headset.

after openvr input emulator stopped working on steamvr Kinect to vr doesn't do it for me or maybe it's only in vrchat but I notice a lot of delay so I was wondering if driver4vr has the same issue in vrchat I would like some input or a video if possible because it went from perfectly usable to something that works if I don't move around too much

I actually stopped using KinectToVR as well for stability issues. I've had no problems using Driver4VR, so I'd recommend the switch. I'll double-check regarding vrchat and get back to you on that.

everytime i try download the kinect driver it says "an error occurred during the installation of the speech platform". can you help?

Hello! Hmm, I am not familiar with that error message. The speech platform isn't necessary for anything you see here, so if the rest of the installation was successful then you should try proceeding with the rest of this guide. Try also running the setup program in a admin mode (from right click menu). Worst case scenario is to reformat your computer for a clean installation.

@@sleet_gaming so I just ended up finding the folder in my documents and dragging them in, but now I can’t get camera one to show anything at all in viewfinder it’s always white, but if I activate secondary view that camera works, but still doesn’t put me in the game just a black background. Am I supposed to chroma key that black in obs and just slap it on the game or what?

@@Lmaolikeacow So you don't even see your avatar on Camera1? Make sure you selected the right profile in the "Camera" settings for "avatar," and then configure your avatar. Also make sure you're properly pointing the in-game camera at your avatar for it to appear in the viewfinder. Also, what game are you playing? Not all games are supported unfortunately. Try Beat Saber since that definitely works. In the "Capture" settings in LIV, make sure "use SDK" is checked and "SDK: Normal" is selected.

Hi Amy, I don't think so unfortunately. At least for the things presented in this video, you need access to Steam on the PC, which the Samsung Gear cannot do.

There are alternatives to LIV, depending on your platform and need (like Oculus Mixed Reality Tools). Custom Avatar mod in Beat Saber works too I think, but I haven't tried that since many versions ago, so can't say how well that works.

Hey Snowy! So, the drivers for KinectToVR and Driver4VR appear to be incompatible, and I'm afraid it'll screw with my current setup. I'd say the One Kinect would probably be a little better, with less minimum distance and slightly better tracking. But it might be a little bit more expensive as well.

You're in luck! I just switched over to a Quest 2, playing Steam via Air Link, and have been troubleshooting for the past several days. Walk me through your setup process, and I can maybe diagnose your problem. Preliminary, it may be an issue with your connection, software setup, or SteamVR plug-ins.

@@aubreyconsani2338 Start with making sure you have the cables set up properly (i.e., your Kinect is connected by a power cord and by USB 3.0 cable to your gaming PC). After installing the drivers, try running some of the Kinect software bundled with it to make sure your computer is able to communicate with the Kinect. Once you confirm that, we can talk next steps.

Hey there! Hmm, I'd say probably not. You'll need at least a discrete GPU, probably the equivalent of a GTX 1070 or higher to have passable performance. But if you have yourself an Oculus Quest, there are other means of achieving mixed reality (look up Oculus Mixed Reality Tools).

Hello! A microphone is not needed per se just to use VRchat, but you'll want it to be able to speak to others using your voice. Most headsets have microphones built in.

Sounds like a hardware issue. Try checking all your connections, from the power supply to the USB. If nothing works, you may have a faulty power supply.

@@vinyl8375 I don't know what's exactly the problem, but I'll say that I get the same error pop-up when I only connect the USB and forget to plug in the power. The Kinect will still blink even with just the USB part plugged in.

What seems to be the problem? I might be able to point you in the right direction if it's a high-level issue, but otherwise you're better off asking folks in the forums or directly to the developers (for LIV, Driver4VR, etc.)

Hey there! Nope, you do not need Vive trackers. Kinect + Driver4VR is a low-cost alternative.

Just wanted to throw in this video that if you are getting a kinect and have purchased a valve index do NOT get an xbox one kinect. Valve index doesn't like the xbox one kinect for some reason and the two don't mesh. If you have an index you can only get the 360 kinect but thats fine compared to the myriad of other problems the xbox one kinect seems to have.

Is Liv 100% needed? I want to try using VRDesktop, kineticV2 and Driver4VR all together.

Nope, it is not. LIV is primarily for recording your VR gameplay, and there are other options out there. If you are simply wanting fully body tracking for in-game purposes, then Driver4VR should be all you need

@@zimrim2973 yes you still need the required hardware, including the Kinect and a gaming PC. On the software side, you'll still need to install the Kinect drivers and Driver4VR, but LIV isn't necessary.

so question I followed your video step by step but now im getting a "could not find Kinect sdk/runtime" message

At which point do you get that error msg? I can't say I'm familiar with the error msg, but it probably has to do with the Kinect SDK installation. See again that you have the correct version of the KinectSDK installed for your 360 Kinect or One Kinect. Once installed, try running some of the developer tools in the SDK to make sure it can communicate with your Kinect.

On Driver4VR, LIV, or in-game? If on Driver4VR, yes that is normal. In LIV, you'll need to set up an avatar. In-game, no idea

I don't think so. The Driver4VR website still has a paid version (30% off though!). The "free" version is simply to test it, as it only lets you play for 10 minutes per session.

Hello! Not sure what the "authentication" problem is. Perhaps something to do with your purchase/login? If so, definitely contact the Driver4VR creator. If something else, make sure all your Kinect cables are properly connected and the Kinect SDK is properly installed.

I cannot guarantee anything, but other commenters have said that it is safe. The "not safe" warning is typically because it is unsigned software that Windows cannot authenticate.

I am not aware of any way of using the Wii sensor bar to accomplish this. This is specifically for the Xbox Kinect.

Not the fanciest, but a reasonably powerful computer yes. Probably at least a GTX 1070 I'd say. Running VR, Driver4VR, LIV, and OBS takes up a lot of resources.
