put your trunk on line it up ..gaps etc...adjusted properly when closed...fix your fenders and bottom panel in place ( out of the way supports to hold it in position so you can install the replacement panels..)...i like having adjustable supports to pull or push it if i need some tuning later....then keep checking the trunk as you fit panels in...only way your getting it correct is to have the doors , hood and trunk or other body parts that go on later ...otherwise your going to find it is off..tack it till your 100% sure it fits and stuff closes/fits..before you weld it solid....and don't warp it too welding it too quickly...takes time..but so does starting over again??

Far as I know the issue with pulling dents out is that the metal will obviously be stretched. So unless you have a way to shrink it after pulling its a case of reducing the lows and not making any high spots for when it comes time to fill. Either that, or replace a panel.
@djambrosia
@djambrosia 2 года назад
Those rear panels are available. I'm amazed how differently Ghia's rust. Mine also had the rear wing bottoms previously repaired but the rest of the rear was 100% rust free including the battery tray. Conversely, my heater channels had rotted from the inside out and yet yours are rust free!

It is great to see you cranking away on this project. Maybe overdoing the rods a little? From what I’ve seen others do they use strategy to be efficient in their use of these to pull dents and minimize the rods they have to weld in each spot. Great call on doing the Mike Fn technique of peeling the rusted panels back like a can of Spam. Just like he does remember to clean and neutralize or convert all the rust with rust converter in the nooks and crannies before covering them up with new panels. Keep at it; the feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment you’ll get driving that beautiful car you restored yourself is priceless!
@CTmoog
@CTmoog 2 года назад
Thanks man! I watched some videos on the rods. Some guys use a bunch of them. I guess it depends how strong the metal is in that area.
@garymallard4699
@garymallard4699 2 года назад
i bought a tool in the 80's for peeling off sheetmetal from door skins..trick was to grind edge so that inner lip was free from outer skin then the spot welds ( if not free enough to tear off )... you can grind or drill the spots and it twists the metal off exactly like a Can of Spam...works great..it was in a Surplus section and cheap...should have bought more than 1?? 🤔
@garymallard4699
@garymallard4699 2 года назад
@@CTmoog you use them as much as needed...they tear off ..you can reuse them a few times...grind ( carefully or your one eye ) or cut off the weld end... lots of channels to watch..works like the old school slide hammer screw way. i learned in 80's
@srortega
@srortega 2 года назад
@@CTmoog Keep in mind that pulling dents you should start around the edges of the dent and slowly work your way to the middle. If you start in the middle, you will end up with a high spot and in genneral it will be more difficult.

Making good progress. Suggestion for correctly positioning the rear engine lid latch bracket: measure from each of the hinge bracket centers (on the body) and get the same measurement from each hinge center to the latch center point. That triangulation should put the latch where it needs to be in all 3 dimensions.

you pull it out in reverse to how it got dented... takes experience..so just keep using it...you can get it out 100% but fir your project in the 90% up range and filler at reasonable thickness is fine....

@TimsWorkshopTJY

Dent puller is cool, saw mike use one. Like you said you just need to get most of the dent out and filler will do the rest. You don't want more than 1/8" I think is what mike said otherwise you need to cut out the damage and weld in a new piece of metal. The back will look great too once you get that done. Hopefully you can score a new section back there. Maybe someone getting ready to scrap one that that section is still intact
@CTmoog

Looking good so far, the one thing i would have done from the start before I started cutting would have been to brace across the trunk lid and the actual bay area itself to stop it moving out especially as you have had to remove so much metal, but overall it looks like you have got away with that. The other thing is im pretty sure that middle support under the battery tray should connect to the rear valance to keep it rigid but it looks a little short, maybe from where it was previously damaged.

Takes lots of youthful energy to even start these jobs!!?? I used to do a bit on cars that weren’t that old but rusted early from lack of any protection at all! I had an’87 Vauxhall Cavalier, the roof of which literally fell in! They replaced it after much rowing! The only difference between then and now...is the car has rusted for so long, there’s virtually nothing left to build from, whereas back then it was fresh rust, so to speak! Good luck going forward !

Just one thought. Firstly, I am not a body man, so keep that in mind. I do work with metal for a living. Would it be worth trying to just wire brush (not by hand) the areas where you want to put the dent puller studs? If you grind it, to get the dent to the original contour, you might be in actuality needing to over pull the dents to do this, which, of course, you don't want to do. Just getting the primer off, enough to get the studs to weld, maybe that could work better, leaving more of the original contour?
