What also happened on September 11, 2001 was while doing research in isolated region of Burma, herpetologist Dr Joseph Bruno Slowinski was bitten by a juvenile multi-banded krait (bungarus multicinctus). He died 29 hours and 30 minutes later after several medical attempts to save his life failed. The September 11 attacks that happened meanwhile made communication with the American embassy in Burma difficult and delayed a rescue helicopter and delayed medical supplies from being carried to his campsite. By the time the American embassy readied a helicopter and readied medical supplies to be carried to the campsite, bad weather set in. And the weather of that night was particularly bad, preventing Slowinski from being transported to a hospital by the helicopter and making it impossible to carry medical supplies to the campsite.

@@littlelightbeing Joseph Bruno Slowinski was bitten by the krait when his Burmese assistant told him it was a non venomous mimic of the krait. Without checking, Slowinski reached into the bag and the snake bit him and he pulled out the snake and immediately knew it was actually a krait. It’s really an awful story when it comes to thinking about what if. What if he didn’t take the word of someone else as to what the species was? What if he looked at the snake without reaching into the bag and identified it properly? If he survived it, Maybe people would’ve told him “sticking your hand in the bag without looking getting bitten by that snake? Why didn’t you check it out? You could’ve been killed”. But you know because he died, we’re a lot more sensitive about it and we’re a lot more respectful about it. It was really sad that he passed away.
