FULL Ebike Hub Repair Teardown And Rebuild! - Changing the axle on my Ebike hub motor

The axle of my ebike hub motor stripped. In this video I go over how I did this Ebike Hub Motor Repair doing a full hub motor axle replacement with a new axle from the manufacturer. This process will be similar to what you'd expect from a Bafang Hub Motor, but this was done with Greenpedal Hub Motor.
Big Thanks goes out to Myles at AffordableEbikes.ca for helping me import the required parts!
In the typical TheHowToDad style; no specialized tools were used in the making of this video!

Great video, and perfect for a person I know who's looking to do the same job. I've had hub motors apart dozens of times, but the axle and windings are about the only thing I haven't done yet. Most of my motors are Bafangs, and the magnet structure has slots that you can put the puller arms into. But I do it sideways in a bench mounted swivel vice so not to worry about the magnets dropping back into place. Thanks again for the video!

A little dielectric grease will help that wire assembly slide in easier if you put a light coat on the sheathing. Try to keep it away from the end though, it'll make it tough to grab the end when you're pulling with pliers.

There's no commutator on a brushless motor. That's what the hall sensors are for. The rotor is the outer part with the magnets. Hub motors, like ceiling fans, and ebike motors have the rotor on the outside and the stator with the windings in the center.

For clarification not all ebike motors are like this, (most) geared hubs are, but direct drive are not. The technical term is "outrunner" vs "inrunner" motor.

Where I case I ever need a hall sensor, where would one find those? Plus I just bought another e-bike like the one my wife has, when I was pushing it in the shed the back wheel was a bit tight, not real bad, it could be the disk brake or if it is in the hub what could it be? It hasn’t been used for about 4 years, it’s been inside the whole time. It actually has a lot less miles than my wife’s,, it’s an Emmo monster. They are good bikes, only paid $300 for it. Very good shape other than battery’s and that stiffness

My e bike started acting goofy. Just pedaling freewheel works and change stays on. The second I give some power it’s like the freewheel portion of it locks up. Kicks the chain off. I was thinking a loose magnet but not certain. Any ideas? I had just put new meat on it. When I first turned the wheel there was a clicking sound but couldn’t tell if it was that or brakes. LCD no codes

The problem you had feeding the wire into the new axle. Next time take some 50 lb braided fishing line it's got the diameter of about 12 lb test strength and small diameter. Tie the braided line to the wires harness feed the fishing line through. Before you put the axle in. Then once it's in the braided line will help you pull the wire through. That's all I've done it and works good also you can take something basic like butter from your refrigerator put it around that harness it'll help it feed it through through with ease. Interesting pointing out that hole it's supposed to take Grease. That was frustrating how to take it apart again. Anyway great video

What are you thinking dude? Leaving the winding even nicked, can reduce the flow of current! All windings have a varying amount of insulation. Yeah, it's thin, but it's there. You can't assume to suck current through one wire into the adjacent wire. One strand will screw up the whole magnetic field. I would considder rewinding it with a slightly thicker, well insolated(dark purple/red). This will most likely increase your lost torque, and then some. Ask someone with hands on experience.

Hey Cody! I answer all my comments, even from REALLY old videos! as far as the shop vac method goes, it worked, but a stronger vacuum pump would work better. That was an informative breakdown of the problems with a hub motor, and has helped me with something. I am going to replace my 500w rear with a 750, then I will have a spare 500w motor for my fat tire bike. I wonder if its possible to modify the shaft to make it fit the smaller front fork drop outs then add it to the front wheel and use the same old controller, another thumb throttle and a new small battery on a rack on the front, just to give me a bit of extra power on a hill when required. So now I know its kind of possible for me to add a new axle shaft. (I was planning to remove the cassette holder cut the axle down and cut new threads with a tap and die set.) what do you think?

Excellent video. Shim issues. Interesting I've had had the motor out to regrease and clean the gears, it all turns fine until I tighten it up. It's if it's catching, I thought I was missing a shim on the in side of the hub casing where you accidentally put one. Have you any suggestions why it might not be turning when I tighten back up . If I rest the motor back in lined up with the gogs, it drops in fine . It turns in one direction but not the other and when I put the screws in it doesn't turn at all.

you will need to contact the MANUFACTURER directly

Where did you buy the wire
@TheHowtoDad
@TheHowtoDad Месяц назад
I contacted the manufacturer directly. It was not easy to convince them to sell me the parts, and the parts were not that much cheaper than just buying a whole new motor. I'd suggest buying a new motor and just swapping the internals. it is MUCH easier, and doesn't cost that much more.

Congratulations. Of course, when you tapped the new motor shaft with a metal hammer, I almost jumped out of my seat. LOL! The epoxy on the windings was a good fix.

sorry...axels are not easy to come by. I had to go directly to the manufacturer, and it was expensive and a bit of a waste of time. I'd sugges buying a new motor and swapping the internals.

You seem to be the most knowledgeable one I've seen for e bike motors. I'm such a newbie but is there a way of testing to see if the wheel will move by bypassing the throttle and the module? By accessing the three main wires and the battery?
@TheHowtoDad
@TheHowtoDad Год назад
I would definitely not do that! the throttle sends a signal to the controller, then the controller sends the correct power to the motor. if you bypass the throttle and the controller your motor will probably spin up very fast, then never spin again

@@TheHowtoDad ok, thanks for the response. Hopefully you can shed some light on what's going on with my e bike. It's a front hub assist Jauopay eBay with 48 volt battery. I noticed my front wheel was loose so I tightened it but I think I over tightened the nuts on the motor wheel. It worked for a second and then stopped working and all I get is a click from the wheel. My dvom shows 57 v from the battery using pins in the wire, when I snap the throttle no drop in volts or break in connection from the dvom. Am I reading voltage from the module to the three wires? My throttle seems to be getting 4.5 volts but I get no voltage to the bigger three wires to the hub motor with throttle wide open. I did the simple test of touching the wires not connected and got a drag and resistance with no drag, I don't know what I'm looking for but I'm fairly good with the dvom. Hope you can help.

@@tommyhajimoto6968 start with the easiest problems first. Check all your connections. Unplug and plug them all back in, use silicone grease on each connection. Check that the pins in the plugs are where they should be. next step would be to check the throttle, may need to be replaced. it could also be your controller. if your controller overheats it will stop working and will need to be replaced. It may not be your motor at all, it is likely something more simple

@@TheHowtoDad yeah I'm hoping it was coincidental I did have the bicycle upside down and the throttle could have been damaged.
