Very true, but it's also good to see what average and typical use looks like. There are also times when brand instructions or intentions are prescriptive (e.g. using liquid lips as liner isn't usually instructed) or just don't work (e.g. Becca Zero).

Emily, could we get more super close ups like you did for your nose in this video? You always look flawless from your regular distance, but I think it would be helpful to see how each foundation sits on your skin up close. Thank you for such an in depth review.

TheJollyFatElf it's not helpful. If you want to know how a product sits on your skin then go swatch it. Seeing it on someone else gives you zero indication of what it will look like on you because of our unique chemistries.

@@DarkAngel71180 #1 You can't swatch anything in stores because of the pandemic. #2 From where she normally sits, her face looks smooth and flawless. With her showing her face up close, we were able to see how the foundation sat on her face, if it settled into pores or lines. The foundation reviews that actually show up close skin are more helpful than those that are several feet away from the camera. #3 It may not be helpful to you, but that doesn't mean it won't be helpful to others, including me. I'd rather see real, textured skin, than a smooth canvas with a little discoloration.

Theresa Du that's so dumb. Our body chemistries are all unique. Go test products ON YOURSELF before dismissing or buying them based on influencer reviews. Literally the dumbest thing ever and I don't understand people that make purchases based on these kinds of videos.

@Theresa Du you're right don't waste your money on that foundation, that foundation is trash, it cracks, it settles in pores & more plus there's no coverage, you'll do better with ANY drug store foundation, even Elf & Wet N Wild foundations are better then the Rare Beauty foundation. Save your money & pass on that trash.

Me, too -- I'm juuuuust getting into Rare Beauty as a result of watching Only Murders in the Building and wanted to try the tinted moisturizer. I got that as well as a highlighter and two of the liquid eye shadows yesterday. I also got the 4-in-1 mist that I sorta regret bc I never ever use setting sprays. I'm excited to play with it after I get a shower this morning.

Wanted to share something I thought was interesting about the balls on top of her packaging. Apparently, she did that purposefully to make opening the products less painful for people with chronic pain associated with arthritis, Lupus, or other diseases that affect the joints. I just thought that was a really cool detail worth mentioning. So, there you have it! 😂 Love me some Emily Noel!!!! 💗💗💗🙌🙌🙌

Have you tried putting a dot on the back of your hand and using a sponge to spread the product and then going in with the sponge to apply the blush on your cheeks? Might be an easier way to control it than dotting it on your face and then trying to blend it out.

Honestly after you apply it the usual way just take the sponge/brush you used to apply your foundation and use the product left on it to kind of blur the edges and blend it to give that flawless blend

Hate using a sponge for the blush. It's soo splotchy and uneven on my skin. I've had a lot of luck with a dual fiber brush. That works a lot better for me than the sponge did.

Emily, thank you so, so much for all the extra close-ups and explanation of what techniques you used and the results. I always think that every skin texture and condition will experience complexion products differently, but there still seems to be almost a sheen of unwillingness to critique these products in most of the videos I've seen. I'm not sure what that's about, but viewers definitely want to know how you really feel about them, regardless of the brand creator. A++ for effort.

I absolutely love this range and the foundation brush with the foundation is an EXPERIENCE. I love love love everything I’ve tried: foundation brush, foundation, concealer, two blushes, illuminizer, primer and three lip soufflés.

When I do liquid eyeliner, I start out by drawing the line of the wing from the corner of one eye (the one where if you were to extend it, it would meet the end of your eyebrow), then I do that same little line on the other eye. After that, I go to the outer corner of my eye to start lining and connect that line to the wing, then do that to the other eye. Then finally, I line both eyes going from the outer corner to the inner one! This is pretty much always how I've done eyeliner and I find it makes it so that the wings are as even as possible. Hope this helps! It's basically the same as what you did in this video except I start from the bottom of the wing and kind of do both eyes at the same time.

*EMILY, I HAVE A TIP FOR YOU...Mix a bit of the blush and a bit of the highlighter on the back of your hand, then apply with fingers. It makes a beautiful, glowy blush. Just like your favorite Beauty Bakerie blushes!*

I'm usually a brush girl, but I find that apply the rare foundation and concealer with a sponge works WAY better. it doesn't bunch up and settle like it does with a brush.

I love how thoughtful and researched this review was. I love that you really try to figure out how to use products to get the best effect. I actually really love this line!! My top tips: definitely use fingers to blend blush and highlight. They just melt into the skin. And maybe try some lighter blush shades because they are definitely easier. :-) For foundation, i think you’ve almost found its sweet spot. (For context, I’m 35 with combination skin, definitely tending a little dryer with the change of season. And I LOVE the natural finish I get with this.) It definitely seems to need a hydrating primer/priming moisturizer underneath. And then the main key seems to be not to try to build it. Trying for anything more than light-medium coverage definitely brings out the texture problems. I think where you get the perfect fit is to use the lesser amount of foundation you first tried with your fingers BUT do it with a brush so it doesn’t fully melt the coverage away. And then don’t build on it. And go light with the concealer as well. And powder lightly, either with the powder puff from her kit or another light hydrating powder, like the hydrating mineral veil. I absolutely love the lip products too. I definitely prefer a mousse matte lip that can handle some touch ups, and the balms are soooo hydrating (although I’ve only really used the lighter shades of the balms.) I really do feel amazing with a full face of rare beauty. But it’s interesting to see how many people are getting such different results with it. It’s supposed to be super easy and user friendly, but it does seem like you have to experiment until you get just the right application technique and then it becomes a super quick and easy routine. But I should also say, I really don’t think the foundation will somehow magically work for everyone if you just keep experimenting enough. These are the best tips I’ve figured out, but like any product if it’s driving you crazy trying to make it work just move on to what you find easier or already love.

Thanks for this review Emily! Initially, I had no interest in this line, but then I heard there were a couple lighter shades of foundation with olive undertones. Having a pretty fair complexion with an olive tone, I can never find foundation shades that match, so I tried this. I have to say that it is probably the best colour match I’ve ever found (I usually have to mix shades), but I’ve had the same issues you discussed. I’ve tried it with a couple different primers (Becca and Guerlain) and with a brush and sponge but nothing really makes it look the way I want it to, unfortunately.

Fenty foundation did all of this to me. I kept the primer bc I really liked it but I’m with you in feeling like the only person who struggles with the new fun things.

I bought the foundation too and it looked terrible on my skin. I tried for a week to apply it differently: different amounts, with and without primer, with and without powder, etc... Still, I had the same results as you, Emily: it left my skin looking more textured and aged than I ever thought possible. For the price, I didn't have a choice, I had to bring it back. I got the concealer brush though and I still really enjoy that!!

I’m glad I saw this honest review I feel like so many other I influencers bragged said they loved it so I bought it and I was so upset cause it was patchy on my skin sitting on top of my nose forehead and eyes ! And none of my other foundations do that! So I’m so glad I seen this TRULY HONEST REVIEW ! Thank you!!!

Hi Emily! I have been waiting for you to review Selena's line. I have been using it for a couple weeks now. I was having the same problem with foundation and concealer. What I found to work really well for me was applying both with a brush and then dabbing it out with a beauty blender. Thank you for an honest review, loved it! Have a great day!

Thank you for that thorough and honest review! Oh my goodness, truly LOL when you started blending the blush on your cheeks😂😘 After seeing how the face primer and foundation weren’t meshing on your skin, I looked up the ingredients and the primer is water based but the foundation is not. In order for them to work well together they should have the same make-up....is perplexing that they didn’t think that through or test it more thoroughly🤔

I usually start with my wing first because my problem is getting them to match the angles (and it takes me approximately 20 minutes to do winged eyeliner). I am practically a pro at running liquid liner against my lashline, so I feel like I need to take more time to focus on getting the wings done the way I want them

I think that the primer contributes to the texture... Also, i would put a bronzer in my crease just to give more dimention to the eyes and set that area. The only think i would try from that line is highlighter.

This rumor-as-fact about the packaging design is already showing up a lot in the comments, so... A few influencers, definitely including Robert Welsh, have been baffled by the deluge of sometimes-belligerent comments they've gotten on their Rare Beauty reviews telling them that they forgot to mention "the packaging was designed for people with arthritis/lupus". They have dug through official marketing and other posts but found nothing more concrete beyond "[other commenter] said she saw Selena say it in a live stream". Several people emailed the brand and got similar responses back (Robert's is shared on his Twitter) confirming that, while Selena picked out packaging she personally could use easily, it was NOT designed from the ground up specifically for people with arthritis or other dexterity problems. So, it's possible one person misconstrued something Selena said and then people played a game of Telephone/Chinese Whispers on social media. It's successful packaging that looks distinct, visually unifies the line, and takes a softer approach to minimalist design trends, it doesn't need to be boosted by something that isn't true!

Wth is Chinese whispers and why is it called that!? The reason the brand is not saying anything about the packaging being made for people with disabilities is because it was not tested for and dr approved which it would have to be if they wanted to use that as a marketing strategy and promote it as so! If they were caught saying so in any way, the company or Selena, they could get in big trouble and get fined and possibly have to recall their products, issue refunds and it would be a PR nightmare so although that may have been the intention behind the packaging they can not say or even hint at it! It's too bad they didn't have it tested and dr approved because I bet that could have been huge for them as it hasn't been done before and I'll bet most disabled people would have bought it to try just for that fact alone!! I know I probably would have!! But I'm sure the testing alone would have cost a fortune which for a new small business is hard when you're just starting up!! So although I'm sure that's what it was designed for it can't ever be confirmed by the brand or Selena!

I don’t exactly agree. This is what was in the FAQ section on their website: Q: Was Rare Beauty packaging specifically designed for people with dexterity challenges? A: Each Rare Beauty product was designed to Selena's personal preferences to emphasize ease of use. While we’re thrilled to hear that some individuals with dexterity challenges find the design helps them open and use our products more easily, we have not conducted official testing on the packaging for these claims. Ease of use and inclusivity are highly prioritized at Rare Beauty and it's something we're continuing to test and explore in the future.

It's nice that Selena chose the design because it was easy for *her* to use, but that doesn't mean that it was a deliberate choice to add all people with arthritis/lupus, and I think people should stop trying to do so.

@@hinu1987 nobody has to have drs specify or test that a product could be easy to use for a disability. That's for medical purposes or to bill items through insurance and consider items as medical equipment. It's more likely that the company wants their products to be considered beauty products for all, not just disabled people. If you call it a product for disabled people, regular people wouldnt be interested in it bc they're not disabled. That would kill the brand or push it in to a market for only elderly and disabled people. So instead, they marketed the brand and products at young people and then slid in a comment about it being easy for selena with her lupus to grab at a market of people that the beauty community ignores. Since the beginning of time beauty and disability does not go together. The able body world likes to exclude us and even hide us. How many disabled people have you seen in beauty campaigns for any brand? We're out here--just with bare bare minimum representation.
