Nikon has been flexing their video capabilities with their new mirrorless line, but they are still completely uncommon in the realm of professional video... naturally, I wanted to challenge that. i have the Z6ii and Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5" 12G HDR. i record in 12bits 4K 30fps (without crop), and it is insane. lens : sirui 35mm T2.9 FF 1,6x

This seems very misleading. Technically the title is correct, you are shooting anamorhic on a Nikon Z mount camera, but the Z6 is the video centric camera while the Z7 is the landscape high resolution stills camera. I have used the Z6 for 3 years with a Ninja V and never faced any of the issues that you bring up in this video. I am sure you don't intended to be misleading and if so maybe it would not be the worst idea to add that you are trying this on Z7 in the title of the video?

For Video the Z6 is the better choice.

with the z6 I and II you have the 4k fulframe 30/25/24p without crop and with less rolling shutter. I think with the sony a7 R you run into the same problem.

You failed to mention that they Nikon Z6 & Z7 also have 12 bit ProRes RAW available. Also Z6 does not crop like the Z7 does for 4k video

@@robertfeliciano5723 yes but he didn't mention that its 12 bit. Its been months since I saw this video and I don't remember what argument he was making that mentioning the 12 bit prores raw would have been a notable thing

Z6 even has 4k downsampled from 6k, Z6 just is a better video camera in every way

Not the best idea to choose Z7 for this. The way to go for video is Z6, Z6II, Z9, Z8 NOT Z7, not Z7II. One might choose Sony A7R for video - wrong way. Nikon Z6II (after paid software upgrade) has 12bit RAW with Ninja V from (almost) full frame and much less rolling shutter.

Thank you for this. I shoot the Z6 and I do t have the crop issue. I do agree that Nikon is not really a cine camera. I Nikon for photo and video how ever all ok my video content is for social media and website. Most it is viewed on small screens. I feel like he’s perfectly suited for what I do. I am primarily a steel photographer and I wasn’t buying a whole new set up for Video. Thanks so much for this and I would love to see a Z9 set up.

Like several other has mentioned, the Z6 would be a better option for video, even if it has limitations aswell. The Z9 and internal RAW options looks promising though! I always had problems with the N-log on the Ninja V recorder, looks impossible to expose in certain scenarios and to get it to look good in any NLE. What were your settings on the Ninja and did you just drop in the official LUT or did you work with it in?

offcial luts are bad, you have to work in davinci in a CST workflow with a specific mapping otherwise your rec 709 looks really bad.

Thank you so much for wading so deep into all that! I have access to a Z7, and bought a Ninja V. a friend of mine is keen to shoot 2x anamorphic, and I'm wondering how crazy it would be to shoot 2x on a Z7? Would be pretty messy in post with further cropping and desqueeze... Im thinking its probably... Not my best idea.... And yet I have all the gear at my disposal...

Awesome video, answered questions I’ve not seen answered anywhere else. I’ve got a z7 and a 6ii, and I’ve tested out my fathers z9. The 9 is a monster. It’s hard to go back for video.

prores raw on the nikon is 12 bit 422, n log is 10 bit 422. great video... nikon should put all these info somewhere i mean it's a lot you have to leave behind.

Well I shoot Nikon both video and photos professionally (wedding etc), though I joined the Sony bandwagon, am still a Nikon lover... Their less focus on video centric features is their downfall despite they have very capable camera in terms of quality even on their cheapest camera.

I’m surprised the prores raw is not in 12-BIT. PRORES Raw 10-Bit isn’t seen much in cameras now.

It’s the Z9 you want video fans. The earlier z cams weren’t ready for prime time.

i think nikon has huge limitations because they use sony sensors, its look like they are always behind in terms of video I think it's a part of the deal with Sony... ok Z9 now has great specs but it is other league's very expansive body.. olso I think z6 have better specs

it doesn't have anything to do with Sony sensor. Nikon took time to get into Mirrorless system and Nikon doesn't had dual pixel af just like Canon had in DSLR so for Canon it was easier to switch from DSLR to Mirrorless but Nikon took time. but if you look at specs Nikon was the first to put B-raw recording with external recorder on mirrorless and they also added ProRes Raw on external recorder before Sony. they design their own sensors just like McLaren design their own engines but someone else manufactures engines for them. if Sony was really preventing Nikon to make real progress then they can just switch the manufacturer. Samsung also build sensors. Nikon also have lots of semiconductor related technology at the moment for 6/7nm or smaller chips there are only two brands who build those machines which manufacturers this chips one is Nikon.
