One thing I realized watching this is how they show emotion. Rachel sings with her body, she puts on a show, which is amazing, but Kurt sings with his eyes. You see how throughout the song the redder his eyes get before crying, showing that he connects with that peice. Rachel just stage cries. With this song you neeed to provoke emotion not just put on a show. That is why I think Kurt won
If you see Lea perform she does the same think, she sings with her body.. :-) in this song that's was why Kurt won, but she has an AMAZING voice and I would love to see her live!!!!
Never where going to give him tht note lol he doesn’t have the vocals skills to reach it the show really made you think tht he is a good singer but he has one of the worst voices in the entire show so annoying, puckerman and Blaine and Brody has so much better voices than him Kurt voice is annoying
This was the performance that made me realize why I always prefer Kurt’s singing to Rachel’s. Simply put, when Rachel sings, you hear Rachel. When Kurt sings, you hear the song.
Kurt killed this, he genuinely sounded like he was about to burst into tears at the end from the emotion. Rachel just wanted to put on a show rather than sing for herself, so all the emotion was lost. What really annoys me is that she clearly needed more context before performing this piece. The ending isn’t supposed to be belted out like that, Jean Valjean is dying in this scene. It’s meant to be softer and more emotional, as Valjean can finally be at peace with Fantine. (I don’t want to argue with anyone, this is just my opinion.) Edit: Just remembered that Valjean wasn’t actually dying here, but I still think the ending should have been softer.
This being the first time that I ever saw Glee, I am unfamiliar with the plot or characters. My impression though is that the boy has way too high of a singing voice, and the girl sings very well. The boy sounds like a girl, like he was supposed to be a girl when he was born or something. The only problem is that the song they are singing is a prayer and you don't belt out a prayer, so the ending was completely inappropriate and I would have to say that the boy did a better job with this particular song because, again, it is a prayer.
yeah, but chris colfer also belted out the last note in his solo version. with the song this removed from context neither of them quite nailed the final note
Now I understand why Kurt won this. This song is supposed to be a prayer. Kurt sang it with emotion and decency. Rachel was doing a Celine Dion concert.
I hate how they always give Leah the last note... I mean, the editors always do this on songs where it's a competition. I really wanted to hear Chris sing the last note, not Leah.
There is a version with Chris singing the whole song. It’s glorious. Oh, and there is us a Lea version too. Obviously both recorded the song, then the music boffos cut and pasted. Both versions are on RU-vid.
@@hamham6998: Not always. They let Mercedes hit the last note of some songs, and it started to irritate me. Girl can blow, but they should have let her be the feature voice throughout more songs, not just have her hit one big note at the end.
That's why I always prefer Kurt. To say it simply, Rachel sings (and she sings very good), but Kurt lives the song. When Rachel sings I always feel like a part of her brain is listening to herself and thinks "yes I am good, did you hear the note I just sang?" Even her facial expression gives me that feeling. On the other hand, when it is Kurt, I feel like he is one with the song, and all of the emotions can shine. That's why he is my favorite singer in Glee and that no one can top him in my ears. No hate to the others though. They were all good in their own ways.
I didn't notice this before until I watched this again, but at 0:34 Rachael is doing that hand thing that most girls do when they are either bored or want to ignore someone. It's basically a fake nail inspection and is actually pretty rude in some cases when you are either in the presence of someone else or supposed to be listening/paying attention to something or someone. I think that's why this small detail bugged me so much because Kurt deserves to have everyone's full attention when he sings.
Kurt won because he sung this song like it's meant to be sung, and he sang it beautifully. I love how softly he starts and the way he uses falsetto. BHH doubles as a lullaby and as a prayer in Les Mis and Kurt sings it as such. I would love to hear Chris sing more Valjean songs!
I love Lee Mis... and this song was was always a secondary in my list... but watching this years ago on Glee... Kurt made me love this song... his voice is amazing and the way they intertwine it with with hers it was a breathtaking performance.
I love this diva off, the problem is both songs are designed to suit the actor better defying gravity was chosen to show of Lea while this was perfect to show Chris amazing voice and talent.
God on high Hear my prayer In my need You have always been there He is young He's afraid Let him rest Heaven blessed. Bring him home Bring him home Bring him home. He's like the son I might have known If God had granted me a son. The summers die One by one How soon they fly On and on And I am old And will be gone. Bring him peace Bring him joy He is young He is only a boy You can take You can give Let him be Let him live If I die, let me die Let him live Bring him home Bring him home Bring him home.
It was great that Kurt won this (for more that it was difficult for Rachel) because sometimes she acts like she's better than everyone (in my opinio she is the best in this serie but it doesn't matter), I guess she learnt to be a better person with this lesson. But in my opinion she was really better than him, her voice puts so much emotion in this song (his voice too, of course)!
John Silvester sorry BUT this Song "bring HIM home" from the musical perfection that is les mis, this song is more than just about sounding better. You need to have perfect control of your voice. This is a song for tenors. (Search up les mis 10th anniversary bring him home to see what I'm saying) it is supposed to be a quiet song about letting his daughters love of her life live. Kurt has perfected blending with his head and chest voices and his falsetto is flawless. That is what the song is all about. For this performance alone Kurt wins hands down the whole meaning was lost with lea's powerful high note at the end
Kurt definitely sounded a million times better for the entire performance.. But Lea/Rachel’s last note is absolutely phenomenal... oh my gosh. This was edited so perfectly but it sadly makes Lea sound like she even has a chance to win this battle. But if you listen to the solo version of both.. Kurt is the obviously ONLY choice.
I remember the time i listened to this for the first time. I... I remember. I talked to someone I loved so much. And I wanted them to be home. And I said to the void. Bring him home. And... They were home. They are not with me anymore. I mean. Yeah. They are with a great guy. But I will forever sing my silent song. Bring him home. Bring him home.
Holy crap I've just realised the key here is _higher_ than the original (from where I've heard Colm Wilkinson sing it in concert, anyway._ Did they move this up for Lea Michelle? But Chris Colfer _nails_ it. Completely. Not just the singing but the interpretation too. The maturity he brings to this song is awe-inspiring. I mean 2:26 - 2:32. That there - chills. He knows properly what this song is about and he's singing it properly in character. Rachel is just singing to be famous as Rachel.
No offense, I Love Lea, her voice and songs always give me shivers, but she really ruines the end of the song. And I've always liked Kurt more. He won this diva off and well deserved to my opinion!
To all of the people in the comments saying " How can You be so delusional to believe that Kurt would have won with Rachel over this song" - Well it's a point of perspective. I actually saw Polish version of Les Mis live in 2011 and I remember Bring Him Home was sung so calm, no vocal additions, no additional belting, just like a prayer with a little vibrato and there was no dry eye in the audience. I am still coming back to Kurt's/Chris's performance of BHH because it brings me back in time to that magical performance and connection only the best of performers could have with their audience❤❤
if you ever saw Les Mis this song was sung by Jean ValJean. So Kurt's voice, although good, does not suit this song. Kurt has a unique voice and when he sang I want to Hold your hand I bawled. But you need your hearing checked Lea Killed this song as she does all her songs. There is a reason Chris is writing books and not recording albums. No One would buy them. Being a Countertenor may be good for an opera singer but not this
Though there was obvious interest shown, Lea Michele's first album fell into the "Flop" category on Billboard Charts in 2014, selling 60,000 in the first week but only 102,000 over the year. And though she has been working on a new album it has yet to be completed or released. So, she has only released on individual album. Her solo's while on Glee really don't count. She is quoted as saying she is going to go more back to her roots, so expect show tunes. She is a good theater singer, that does not always translate into album sales. Her next album will probably require that she tour to promote the album. Seems she is moving more toward acting on TV (her movie "New Years Eve" flopped, too) and a lot of magazine work. She, like Kurt, has written books, just not near as many as he has. Additionally, he wrote a movie, too. And EVERYONE who was a regular on Glee was autotuned and their songs greatly manipulated by the sound engineers. www.billboard.com/articles/events/year-in-music-2014/6397785/albums-flopped-2014
Kenneth Stevenson the point of this was that Lea is recording and Chris is not. I could care less how her albums do. If I like them I'll buy them. Her first album might have done better had she toured. but circumstances as they were did not allow for her to tour. I believe that was the main reason it "Flopped" The album has fantastic songwriting Sia, Christina Perri and the like. So it wasn't full of bad songs. She needed to tour. This next album is whatever until she actually releases it. New Years Eve didn't flop because of Lea. There were too many story lines just like Valentines Day. Actually I think after Cory died she wanted to stay close to the Glee Family. She was in a safe bubble. Which is also why, I think, she stayed with Ryan and did Scream Queens. although Hester is an interesting character too many peeps relate her and Ryan Murphy now to glee. it's hard to shake. Ryan owns the rights to Funny Girl. If he would remake it and use Lea, I think she could transition into movies. Her next project should not be with RIB she needs to do her own thing. SHE SHOULD TOUR! Regarding the books, Chris' books are a totally different genre than Lea. His are books geared toward kids and are works of fiction. Where Leas were more biographical. So it's really unfair to compare those. Apples to Organes. The song above though is apples to apples and Lea wins hands down.
I’m so so happy that they didn’t hand Rachel this win too. Kurt deserved this fair and square and I’m so happy he won. I was annoyed at how Rachel responded to him winning by being her usual mopey, pity-party throwing self and didn’t even bother congratulating him, but screw her.
Kurt, hands down for me. I always thought Kurt was Rachel’s best duet partner. Their voices blend so well together. When either of them sings with someone else, it doesn’t quite gel for me.
Sincerely I love both but Rachel did it for me! The point of artistry for me is authenticity. You don’t have to sing a song like the original. Let’s hear you in every song and that’s Rachel every time. I don’t care what you give her, you will hear RACHEL
Both are the best voices on the show for Broadways, Mercedes and Santana are really talented too! but these two I love Rachel more, because she is more versatile, and her voice give me chills! but Kurt is really moving too! one of the best duet of the season! they are the best to sing emotionnal songs! Rachel brings always the best in Kurt, because my favorite performances of Kurt are with Rachel!
i'm not crying, i'm not crying i'm not crying *slaps myself* *crying* oww TT^TT (the emotion of this song makes me cry every tim, and i'm not even joking, the message behind this song breaks my heart. dammit i'm crying again! and my cheeks hurts too! )
I love Rachel I do... Even if she was an obnoxious brat a lot of the time >_> But i love her. But Kurt did better. Sorry bout it. He showed genuine emotion while he was singing. Just like in defying gravity *I think he shoulda won that one too if he hadn't intentionally tanked the note he would've. But neither here nor there* Kurt is singing from the heart, no the SOUL, while Rachel is just STAGING the genuine real emotion that Kurt shows. Hell his eyes were watering up from the first note.
I understand liking Kurt more than Rachel, but y’all have got to be delusional to think that Kurt would beat Rachel in a vocal battle anywhere outside of the glee writing room.
This song is a lullaby prayer, Rachel would’ve annoyed God and woken up the entire town 😂 not saying Kurt was much better they were both out of their depth
It's not even close...done in this higher key than traditionally performed in...she nails it through and through...and he was just "good". Frankly, although I much prefer the original key...id very much like to hear her solo this...he frankly was a distraction from what could have been a great performance of a beautiful song!
A common issue I have with Rachel even though she’s a good singer js how affected she sounds. Her last note especially and this song perhaps more than others. Just because you can belt doesn’t mean you always should. She puts the same amount of intensity into every high note making nothing really stand out.
I will always prefer Rachel's voice because Kurt's just isn't for me, however what kind of wannabe musical theatre actress relies on her voice and that alone? That's why Kurt won; he sang well AND he acted the song. Rachel came in thinking having a great voice meant she could just breeze through it. It's musical THEATRE, if you just want to sing, go into doing vocals for club music.
On what planet do you people live. You don't have to like Rachel but there is no universe where he sings anything better than Lea! The emotional depth in her voice never fails to bring me to tears. This really was stupid
Personally I think lea has an amazing voice like you however I disagree with 'the emotional depth'. Personally I think her tears and facial expressions add to her performance to make it seem emotional but I believe she just lacks character. I do love lea and her voice though
+eloise murphy I don't even have a response to that. YOu can't make anything seem emotional if you aren't truly feeling it. Do you cry? Or do you pretend?? You cant fake that level of emotion everytime you sing. It's not possible. Ask Simon Cowell, Harry Connick, Jimmy Ivine, Scott Brochetta any record executive or any industry insider. Emotion faked = no record sales. And Lea's solos on glee out sold anyone else's. Don't stop believin was number 4 on itunes before the end of the premiere in May of 09, Chris is nothing more than a back ground singer. Lea pulled the rest along. and as much as I love Cory, he was autotuned. There is a reason Chris is writing books and not releasing albums. His voice wouldn't be albe to support an entire album. Rachel was a bit much on the show I agree. Kurt was a dick most of the time but was given a pass. But in real life Lea beats Chris hands down.
lea has a much better range and her chest notes are flawless. CHris has a unique voice don't get me wrong. But there is a reason he's writing books and not recording albums
