April is Move More Month!
Every year in April the American Heart Association promotes Move More Month. The goal is to increase our overall activity levels to maximize strength, mobility, and quality of life as we age.
Ian McVay, PTA, CAFMT filmed a beginner/ intermediate functional workout to follow along with. The chosen exercises have EXCELLENT functional carry over into day to day tasks, such as lifting a box or any item from the floor, moving something overhead such as luggage during a plane flight, and core strengthening exercises that are WAY better than sit-ups or crunches.
00:02 - Dumbbell lift/ box lift
00:50 - Alternating posterior lunge
01:27 - Single arm clean/ press
02:25 - Dead-bug
03:41 - Bear crawl
04:20 - Pallof press
Use a moderate weight, with a target of 10-15 reps before reaching muscle fatigue (or until form failure or pain), 1-3 rounds. You can perform each exercise one after the next, as in a circuit, or repeated sets of the same before moving to the next exercise. Progress to reaching muscle failure, as this becomes the stimulus for muscle hypertrophy.
