In this video I examine a Koi that appears at first sight to have Carp Pox on it's Dorsal fin... Or is it something more sinister ?

Thank you for this video I found it very useful. It appears that some of my koi have a fungus infection. I have added acriflavin to my pond hopefully that might work if it’s not too late. I’ve have started to use medikoi health as an additional boost to their immune system and they are all eating well. 🙏Thanks again.

Hoping for some help from my RU-vid friends here..I have a 1500 gal outdoor koi pond with frequently tested good water quality, gravity filter, uv light, skimmer, waterfall, plants, the whole works. Got 5 7r old koi and recently we recently added 4 new smaller koi. 2 of the 4 since died, 1 of my large koi has weird red stuff on his back side and back tail fin, and 1 other large koi I found dead inskimmer this am, i notice he is ore grey/white than blue/orange like he was before - no parasites on outside or anything..I was told by local to treat with Melafix and pimafix which we started 2 days ago. I have no idea if that killed the other koi today or if it was some other disease that is spreading. Any guidance? Should we add a parasite treatment and if so, thoughts on which?? Hoping for RU-vid help here..thx!

Hello, I have a question: some of my fish are sick, and I got the sick fish out and put them in a different pond. And I'm gonna get my other koi out of my aquarium but is that safe with the same water without the fish? I'd like a reply

An extremely informative video. Is it possible to identify Carp Pox with a microscope? Unless I missed something, the video did not state how. Regards Alex

Hi Alex, You do not need a microscope to identify Carp Pox. They are usually "waxy" looking lumps on the fish. They can be both on the body and fins. If you are unsure, whip the Koi out and put a drop or two of MG on the area. If it runs off, it's Carp Pox. If it sticks, it's something else. Carp Pox is nothing to worry about. With time and heat it'll vanish all by itself. Don't try and remove it as you'll make the problem worse. Just leave be. Hope this helps.

I have a couple of Koi with waxy looking areas on the tail and one below the dorsal fin. The areas are quite large. They don't look like white stringy fungus which I am familiar with. It started when the cold weather kicked in and the temperature dropped to around 8dg and below (around 7dg now). As you suggest I don't want to whip them out of the pond just yet. 1) because they still appear to move around quite healthily and don't display unusual behaviour for this time of year. 2) I don't want to stress the fish, which may cause and problems to increase. Therefore I want to wait until the water temperature goes above 10dg before I scrape and put it under the microscope. I think I will do as you suggest and leave for the time being and hope it disappears as the water warms. If it doesn't I investigate further in the spring. Thanks for you response. Our pond got full of algae during the winter months as I have been really poorly since Nov and have been unable to deal with it. I did manage to get the water checked at the garden center and apart from the algae problem nothing else was wrong with the water. When I finally managed to sort the algae out I noticed one of the fish was covered in these kind of lumps. Unfortunately the pond is very large and I have been unable so far to catch the poorly fish. I also think there are too many lumps to treat. Help! I am concerned not only about this fish but the others also. I have read that it can be infectious but it doesn't usually spread

If it is Carp Pox then there is nothing you can really do. It'll go in time by itself. Heat helps. If it's more fluffy looking then it's fungal. Fungal usually is always secondary so I would be testing your water first and then performing scrapes. Fungal issues can be treated with Malachite Green and I recommend 2% strength of you can get some.

Thank you for posting this video. One of my koi has one or the other of these. Can I ask are either of the growths hard? Not squishy, both are hard if pressed gently? Mine has been with a white hard lump on pec fin and tail fin for a few months. None of the others have it and the koi in question is very healthy and happy.

Their usually hard waxy like lumps. They can be found anywhere on the body, mouth or find.

Hi, I have a 4000 litre formal raised concrete pond in country NSW Australia, currently it is Winter and the pond water temp drops to about 13c at this time . I have noticed since about a month ago some of my Koi have patches of a cloudy gel on their dorsel fins and some larger patches on their snouts & others on their backs. Previously I had sent photos to a local koi breeder who diagnosed it as Carp pox & was told they would grow out of it....my concern is while infected are they spreading it to other fish ? Also to me it looks much more like the fungus you have shown than the example of Carp pox. I was hoping to catch some of the infected fish and use a Pimafix antifungal remedy sold to my by the local aquarium (active costituent 9.8g/l pimenta racemosa ) and see how it goes. Am I wasting my time ? Otherwise my fish appear happy and active and always hungry ! Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

Your best bet is to get hold of some Malachite Green, preferably 2% strength if your treating but normal 1% strength will suffice and put some on the infected area. If it runs off and doesn't stick, it's Pox, if it sticks to the area then it's something else. I'm unfamiliar with Pimafix but if I've ever had a fungal issue to treat, Malachite Green would be my first option. Carp Pox is nothing to worry about, unsightly, yes but that's about it. It'll go in time just don't try and remove it yourself otherwise it'll spread and make it a lot worse !

@@Mythril1976 Thanks a lot for your reply & advice.I have tried to catch the fish ...I fear I will do more harm than good as they are way too fast and get very stressed . I will wait till it warms up a bit and see how they look then !

Hi.. It's a little hard to tell without seeing a picture of the issue. Is the white spot fluffy looking or waxy ? It could just be Carp Pox as Koi can get it on their bodies. If you can get me a picture, reply on here and I'll give you my email address to send it to.

It's a little hard to tell. From the first picture, it could be Pox but the others could say something different. Best thing would be to take it out, sedate it and put some MG onto the area. If the MG runs off, it's most probably Pox. If it sticks, it's probably a fungal infection which the MG will help to cure. You can do this treatment topically. I had a fungal infection the other year on my Jumbo Chag and I topically treated it with MG. After several applications, it was cured.
