Hi and Welcome Back to the channel.
This week we look at Cap Pox in my pond, why its there, what it is and how I manage it.
Also a cheaper pond cover from another channel provider to introduce you to. His covers are proving to be a great addition to his pond at a better price than the polycarbonate covers.
Also a quick update on my winter plans and filter system as we head for the winter period.

Have been keeping Koi for around 30 years and have never covered or heated the pond and never lost any fish in winter! I do reduce the flow and turn the air to the pond air stones down but that’s about it! I switch to a wheat germ feed and continue to feed small amounts if the Koi want it!

Good update Andy have you thought about getting a solar air pump for the winter I know in the uk we don’t get much of the sunny weather but might be a thought I’m thinking of trying it myself. I’ve turned the pond air off and just have the air running on my moving beds so the water is still getting oxygenated. I do believe koi keeping is like a school day learning all the time but you don’t know until you try it. Nice one.

Great update mate good information on the pox. I'm trying the pond balls again for the second year now. But I'll be following the temperature comparison of the ambient air temperature compared to the pond temperature more closely this year and do some videos on my findings. Not expecting much from them as I'm not heated but I just Don't want any fast fluctuations in temperatures over the worst of the winter. It really does depend on your area of the country you call home to make the right choice for yourself if you cover or not I believe. it gets bloody cold up here on the mountain lol.

@irishgeordieskoi
@irishgeordieskoi Год назад
@Dave Jones yes I did see that video, think there was a bit more to it than just the balls alone. I seen sheets of what looked like polystyrene or similar on the water surface also. It was hard to fully understand with it not been in English. I have left myself a large open area for gas exchange anyways just Incase. I've got a video out on it about how I use these balls I did research them before using and was looking for the worst case scenario. My second year using them now 🤞 iv got it right.
@davespages
@davespages Год назад
@@irishgeordieskoi yes, it could have been a toxin from the polystyrene or gas build up. The important thing with fish in winter is to CHECK them everyday. Don't cover over and forget. If something is wrong, the fishes behaviour early on will tell us before things go bad. If you watch fish carefully, they can usually tell you (via thier behaviour) that water parameters are not ideal... well before you do a water test. Watching your koi every day, even in winter is the biggest tool any koi keeper should have.

Hi Andy, I have a nexus 220 which requires an air pump for the k1 to bubble. I have a wifi socket with app (3 for £22 on t'ebay) I have programmed it to run 9am - 6pm Then its off until 7pm... 15 mins on. The off until 8pm. 15 mins on, then off again. This follows through to 9am. When I was at 13c, there was no trace of ammonia or nitrite... provided I fed the koi the morning. I gave gradually reduced feeding as fish got sluggish. Temps held above 8c until yesterday where it dropped to 7.7c and now feeding has stopped. Gave the nexus a blast at 100% pump flow and bottom drain air on full all day yesterday to really clean the pond floor. Then the usual 'boil' clean of the nexus. I've slowed my EA Vari pump down to 20% (uses 11 watts) And so far no trace of ammonia. I have the ability to heat (ASHP) but I am going to give them a winter until the end if Jan, then gradually increase the temp in Feb to 13c to start feeding and kick start immune system. Last year I heated to 13c all winter. Cost approx £250in electric... at 17p/kwh electric is now 36p/kwh so no... gotta save every watt we can.

Nice one Andy - I've always run 2 x 20L p/min pumps feeding 2 x 200mm air discs in the summer. Now in the winter I'm running 1 x 20L p/min pump feeding 1 x 200mm air disc from dusk to dawn. All seems OK. Pond is a pump fed 18,000L pond, with an occasional waterfall fed by the skimmer which of course breaks the water surface bringing oxygen, as does the return from the filter.... Just info that I thought you might be interested in 👍

Great video as ever! Andy. With regards to your air pump, have you ever considered or tried a Venturi system? I have one on my pipework back into the pond, I don't have an air pump at all, i get all the oxygen I need 24/7 free of charge.

@LauMagroTheFrenchKOInection
The one problem with carp pox is that if people cut it, it will definitely spread in the water and on the fish as it's a herpes virus. It's the same as a cold sore. Some people are prone to it. Air pump is not just for oxygen in winter, it has been proven that with no oxygen at all, even in winter, costia can occur in winter and in spring. I think it was KoiTV who was explaining this. He is a marine biologist. Have you considered running it very slow so you can reduce the wattage with those power regulator sockets? You had a fantastic sun up there, nice to see. Bear made me laugh with his paw ☺️

Air in the winter is used for 2 things, 1- keeping a hole in the ice in an event the yop freezes 2- fasilitates the degassing process as leaves and other debris decay. Its not needed for oxygen at the lower temps..

A review of the literature on this viral infection reveals that the presence or absence of rearing at water temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius seems to be a factor in disease outbreaks. In Japan, the natural water temperature is usually above 25°C in mid-summer and the fish spend more than a month at these temperatures, so outbreaks of these diseases are quite rare.

Have you seen the plug thing that Jamie at Keeping it Koi has that means you can turn down your air pump, so it still runs but really decreases the watts it uses? Also just wondered if you are doing it 12 hrs on 12 hrs off, wouldn't it be better for it to be on during the day and off at night if temperature rises decreases oxygen? Oh Bear made me laugh eating his paw 🤣
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle Год назад
Hiya, yes I am looking at the power adjuster that Jamie has tested on his channel to use on mine at some point. 🤔 The 12 hours air on the day or night I don't think matters in the winter due to the water holding more oxygen, but I did hear that oxygen levels drop over night in the warmer summer night? But maybe that's just a myth..🤔😉👍

I doubt most ponds unless they are really over stocked never need air pumped into them except maybe on hot days or if your adding treatments. You could just do oxygen tests to confirm your levels if your concerned. I suppose they could provide other benefits, like putting some movement in your water or moving waste off the bottom for your filter to pick up ?
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle Год назад
Excellent, my thoughts exactly... My middle bottom drain collects waste with or without the air on..😉👍
@KoiMrcoolweb
@KoiMrcoolweb Год назад
You’re into canals so if we look at waterflow taking gravity into account water flows at around 3 miles an hour flat around 4.5 mile an hour on a 45 degree down grade so from the pond to the filter it should flow around the 3 mile per hour or 2000 gallons a minute through a 3” pipe. So there is no reason for a pump in the system as the pressure of the water is pushing itself along so the water from the bottom drain can flow upwards to the hight of the pond under pressure so if you have a filter system to 6” above the pond it should not overflow but the water should pass through each section of the filter system and back to the pond under its own pressure so no need for a pump which means you need no electric power for a pond for water to flow through the system am I missing something in this ?

I bought a little Japanese koi tosai last autumn. It was the runt and still small and thin so was only £12. It never gained weight before the cold winter season arrived.
@KoiPondLifestyle
@KoiPondLifestyle Год назад
Hiya, there's not alot you can do with Carp Pox as it does come and go. I have a Ghost Koi that now keeps the pox through most of the year as it just shrinks when the water warms up. It can cause issues to the fish if you try to remove it, so unfortunately you'll have to hopenthat it reduces as the water warms up and you both get used to the fish having this annoying condition...🤔

Can you build a pond for nothing? I think you can. When I started a pond, it was a hole in the ground with a tarp filled with water and a small pump and a black 2ft by 18” black box with filter sponge and a light. Over the years I have seen fiberglass pre-built ponds marble slab ponds block and brick ponds and in the past couple of years glass ponds and wooden ponds. So can you build a pond for free…yes you can just talk to the site manager of a local house building site I asked a few questions what happens to the left overs the plastic pipe the bricks the blocks sand and cement. He said years ago they where just left covered and landscaped now they have to clean the site up and shift all the building material left over to a landfill. I said can you take stuff you can find a use for the answer was no due to health and safety regulations. I said after everyone had gone and only the clean up crew where on the site could you ask for items and he said yes often the Forman would let you take stuff off the site as everything would have been moved to a single point for removal. So, it is possible to get broken open bags of cement sand gravel bricks and blocks and pipe for free. Just explained what its for and what you are looking for and you can take it for free.
