Like, he had a full team with only one weakness, and a Dundunsparce with laser-guided horn drill (it seriously wiped like half of my team). He’s a great character, but his gym battle was a legit challenge for a lot of us.

that's WHY he's the best, he's the most average dude and anyone can relate to him

I never really got the appeal or love for him. And the only time he ever gave me any reaction was me thinking he’d be normal again… then he went flying… then 2 minutes later I’m onto the final member … Idk seems like one of those things I just don’t get 😅

That was irl me when I got here! I ran mono fighting for my playthrough and Larry clapped me with that Staraptor of his. I got here and said "Larry as my hardest" and then this dude walks out and says sup. So I'm like normals, got it and then my arch foe says hold my beer I got some birds for ya. My tears were pure salt.

I did the same thing, I said he was the toughest and then I was sure that was the reason I was fighting him again; that you were set to fight whoever you had trouble with. Then when I found out it was just him I died!

I struggled against him on Scarlet when I faced him in the Normal Gym.

god that was me, at his gym he kept one shotting all my pokemon with his first it took me SO many tries to beat him. you should've seen my face when he showed up at the elite four, i damn near flipped my shit

@@denryu242 I told her Iono’s was the toughest. She used more Pokémon in her match, and played a _lot_ smarter with it.

Tbf, Koga is no longer a gym leader since he was promoted. Larry simply has to work double shift because Paldea league is short staffed (and he was the only one who worked directly for the League)

@@slobertooth1358 To be fair, gen 7 had just started developing their Pokemon League at the time, so it probably would have been wiser to have experienced Kahunas/Captains (+Kahili & Molaine) be the Elite 4 to start. Just my thoughts, anyway

Meanwhile in Galar, the Gym Leaders Tournament and the Bede fight are effectively the Elite 4.

For what it’s worth, Acerola has a similar role in Sun/Moon.

Honestly, Larry seems to be pretty dead inside since there's multiple implications in the games that she's very hard on Larry, probably because he's just so good at everything he does. Heck, in Indigo disk she mentions that she herself needs to go easier on him because she works him too hard.

Also his hair is a bit flyaway and also the 7 other gym leaders don't match Tera to their mons type only the e4 do it and Larry with Staraptor which is also foreshadowing.

And if you look closely, you'll notice that his lapels have a pattern on them that make them look like wings

That's exactly how I guessed his type, lol. Rika was the only one whose outfit seemingly didn't have any subtle hints towards her type specialty (Poppy had that metallic-looking key, and, even if you didn't take Hassel's classes, he has a cape very similar in style to Dragon trainers). By a stretch, you could maybe say her tie does, but that's by color only, so I don't really classify it as a hint.

I don't understand how folks had trouble with Larry at his gym. I went into the battle with my prize fighter Primeape and made him my bitch.

@@shadowtheimpure well, that's the thing. You had a fighting type, so therefore the gym was easy because type advantage. But depending on your team comp, Normal type gym leaders can be quite difficult.

On top of that let’s not forget that area zero basically stands between Medali (the location of his gym) and the Pokémon league building and considering how notoriously dangerous area zero is in the region the route for the air taxi probably goes around area zero rather than through it for safety reasons adding travel fatigue to his work fatigue

I learned my lesson a long time ago with Pokémon Silver. Normal type gyms are never to be underestimated.

@Emposible The Gamer a good plan, but it's not a guaranteed win. Female starter/Machop won't do any good when the bovine starts riverdance Stomping all over your team and you're praying to not get flinch haxed

That's because he's the only one where Terrastalization isn't a weakness. With almost every other gym leader, their Terra just paints a bigger target on them. Because Larry's Tera Type is Normal, Staraptor's only weakness is Fighting, but Staraptor is also a Flying Type so it can fuck up any fighting type you throw at it. The only one who even tries something similar is Grusha, but Ice has more than one weakness, unlike Normal, so it's not as effective. I wish all Gym Leaders had followed a similar pattern.

​@@boohoo723 I mean, iono kinda does something similar. Her mismagius terastilizes to an electric type(as you'd expect), but the son of a gun has levitate, so it has no weaknesses unless you get it grounded somehow

​@@youveactivatedmytrapcard6392 It's a good defensive strategy by her but her only attack is Charge Beam (and Hex which meh) so it can't hurt ground types much either and any physical attacker can crush it due to its low DEF. Staraptor specifically targets fighting types, it's only slightly slower, and hits harder. It has worse defenses overall but can deal with its weaknesses more effectively than Iono. Now, if you KNOW what Larry will do, you can bring a bulky non-fighting type with good fighting moves and crush him, but that applies to all gym leaders.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that the place where he takes his lunch breaks doubles as his gym.

The boring and canon answer is that the gym challenges are a seasonal thing. As you see most leaders and even elite four have a profession outside of just being a leader

Yeah, Iono was tougher for me too. I knew it would involve more than the Ground weakness, so I had some Grass and Electric Types that would take less damage. But that didn’t really help against her Wattrel and Mismagius. That’s not to say Larry wasn’t tough. My team wasn’t prepared for sleep or Ground moves… but his Staraptor couldn’t outlast my Skeledirge.

I swept with my Lucario. Edit: swept Larry with Lucario. Tho I did sweep Iono with Silicobra
