a movie being a flop doesn’t always necessarily mean it’s bad. ( and being a high success doesn’t always mean it’s a really good.) By this logic, Blade Runner 2049 is a terrible movie and Captain Marvel is a masterpiece.

I personally just don't go see movies in the theater anymore. The overall quality of movies now pales in comparison to movie released even 10 years ago. Since the lockdowns movies now are ending up on VOD 3-6 weeks after opening in theaters, this really hurts the good movies, because a family of 4 or more people can watch it at home for $20 or go to the theater and spend $100 and the only inconvenience is having to wait a few weeks. Hollywood has repeatedly told fans of their franchises that our opinions don't matter, and that's fine, but they shouldn't act shocked when people opt to not buy their product. Hollywood likes to muddy the waters with their movie titles, the Furiosa movies name has Mad Max in it and this may shock you but a lot of movie goers don't always research the movie they attend, and I guarantee at least some people will be surprised Max isn't part of the film. At this point a lot of people are just done with Hollywood as a whole. Apathy has set in and a significant group of people just don't care anymore, people are now routing for Hollywood to fail, to them the entertainment isn't movies and tv shows, it's watching the trainwreck that is Hollywood run off the rails. It really feels like the end of an era, very sad.

This may be controversial to some, but I think the only way a new Mad max movie would be a HUGE hit (even Fury Road wasn't a megahit, it barely broke even at the box office) is if Mel Gibson returned to the role. To the general audience, he is pretty much retired from acting, because people in general have no idea about those staight to streaming geezer teasers he's done the past years. So, the studio would be able to market it as the return of the original Mad Max and Gibson's epic return to acting at the same time, to the role that made him famous. Gibson isn't THAT old yet so he could pull it off as kind of an Unforgiven-type "one last ride" role. Of course that's not gonna happen because big studios are afraid to hire him for his past mistakes, especially in these sensitive modern times. But deep down, the studios know this, and Miller knows this (especially after this weekends results). The vast majority of the audience is already men (women don't care about these movies no matter who the lead is) so taking Gibson back wouldn't alienate the already mostly male audience and I think there's a large group of older men who don't care about Furiosa as a character and to them Gibson is the only one who would bring them to the theater. Fury Road is a masterpiece, Furiosa was an okay film, and a Mad Max film made in the style of those but with Gibson back in the role as the vengeful old road warrior going for his one last ride would be epic and an emotional climax to the whole saga.

What if "Mad Max The Wasteland" (Which is the rumored Mad Max prequel of Fury Road) Would be old man Max (Mel Gibson) while he has his last ride but then he meets this young kid who learns from Max(Gibson) And then this kid would take over the role of the road warrior. Takes over his name and Mad Max becomes a man that never really dies. Then at the end of the movie, that kid grows up and he looks like the Max from Fury Road (Tom Hardy)

I agree with you. This movie doesn't appeal to a wide enough audience. I brought my 3 kids to see this in IMAX, My 2 sons didn't like it, and my girl did (but it's not a movie she would have chosen to see with her friends) and my wife decided not to watch this. So out of a family of 5, basically I was the only one who really liked it. Compare to Top Gun Maverick, my whole family liked it because it's a feel good movie & definitely appealed to a much wider audience. The primary reason why Fury Road did much better is the same reason why Top Gun Maverick did well: Both iconic franchises took so long to come out (30+ yrs) that people were at least curious about it, plus Fury Road was such a huge upgrade from its predecessors that many people got sucked into seeing it just out of curiosity. I also think a female lead might have alienated some tradtional die-hard action junkies who still prefer macho men in these stereotypical male lead roles. As a matter of fact, I read some reviews of Fury Road & some viewers were already turned off by Charlie Theron outshining Max, so those viewers definitely aren't coming back to see Furiosa. One last thing: this Bidenomics inflation is really eating into the average family's discretionary spending Ina big way. So in conclusion, it come down to this: die-hard action junkies who don't mind female led movies & unaffected by the stagflationary economy came out to see Furiosa: definitely a small crowd.

I hope Furiosa does well nevertheless. I have really enjoyed the movie, Miller is such a visionary film maker, you cannot ignore how well thought his concept of story telling is. The movie is a visual treat and Anya is brilliant, the whole cast is brillant. Talking about cash grab, half of the trailers i had to endure before the movie starts were reboots or remake. I was so annoyed when the trailer for "The Crow" came up: there is absolutely nothing in it, no substance, no emotions, nothing; it's utterly pointless. I too was confused by a mad max movie without mad max in it. But we went out to the theatre as a family the other day and absolutely loved it! I generally agree with the whole being tired of the whole female protagonist thing - especially as it pertains to superhero movies - but I never even thought about this movie that way at all (just thought strange no mad max etc), because Miller doesn’t give a crap about big studios and business- he just wants to create his vision. And he absolutely kills it here. Furthermore, never does he try and make us believe she is stronger than any of the men in this movie. She is cunning and uses tact at times - but relies on men to help her, and completely gets run over (literally sometimes) when face to face physically . As well, Hemsworth’s villain completely takes over the movie in an over the top juicy performance! Loved the film. Great night out at the movies!💪 PS - I haven’t watched Cap’n Marvel films or Mdm Webb - nor will I. I’ve also long ago stopped bothering with Star Wars (and all the related series) because of this forced pandering to force feed us female heroes, and a token (insert race / sexual identity here) person from every demographic everywhere, to the point of being laughable. This wasn’t the case with the Furiosa movie. It was a strong action movie on its own merits.

I basically just assumed he wasn't informed of her going missing. In this movie he had so many, (more than in FR) and Rictus wasn't going to implicate himself by admitting he tried to molest her and she escaped. It honestly made sense to me that if nothing was said he wouldn't notice, since he said she would be his bride as a woman, so he'd pay less attention to her as a child. He just wanted to add her to his collection.

I'm going to make a couple of points here. Firstly, I also LOVED this movie. And, for me at least, the biggest reason for that is of Anya Taylor Joy. I think this was a great showcase of her talent as an actress. When you look at the movies, and very different types of movies, that she's done, it's amazing. She's been in horror (The Witch), period pieces (Emma), mystery/thriller (The Menu), to name a few, and she's amazing in anything she does which really shows her talent and range as an actress. Secondly, I know people are considering this as massive flop at (last I read) $31 million for the weekend, BUT it still was #1 at the box office, which does show that people just weren't coming out to the movies this weekend for anything. I do TOTALLY agree that the Mad Max movies may not appeal to everyone, especially since we've been inundated with dystopian future movies, but I think there may have been other factors as well (that had nothing to do with a female lead) For example, I live in New England where the weather was amazing for most of the weekend (Fri - Sun) and people were at all the New England beaches this weekend. In the mid-west there were tornados that effected 10's of millions of people, so there were enormous amounts of people that just weren't going to the movies for various different reasons. I know it's easy to bust on a big budget movie that doesn't perform like expected, but sometimes we need to look at everything.

Look on the bright side. Furiosa bombing might be a blessing in disguise. Granted it would be a shame if Miller never gets to make The Wasteland, BUT at the end of the day, maybe it's best the braindead masses think Mad Max sucks, that way hollywood won't keep pumping out endless sequals of it once Miller passes away. Us fans get to enjoy our 5 great movies at that point. Some of the best movies of all time bombed at the box office, The Thing is an excellent example, Blade Runner 2049 is another more recent movie that a ton of people complained about online and yet completely missed the point of the movie etc. Granted, I'm really hoping Miller gets to make The Wasteland or whatever it will be called, it's all planned out, here's hoping Miller just has to direct a few other movies to secure the budget, but who knows, be a shame if he doesn't seeing as he's never let anything compromise his vision so far! Fingers crossed!

The Mad Max franchise is not dead, and we all love it. What most people don't like or want are female protagonists who "jump the shark", AND characters who are NOT Mad Max (EDIT) - [In a Mad Max movie, and if "its not a Mad Max movie" then don't use the name in the title of the movie]. And this movie has both, so there you go. It's not that difficult to understand.

Not a 4 quadrant movie. I have seen Fury road. Great action but no depth. I liked the Mel Gibson movies because he always interacted with people and was a hero. Plus what I liked about those movies was they were Australian. Charlize and Tom are American and British as well as Nick Holt. This movie has another American as the star. Probably one of the reasons she doesn't talk much. Hemsworth hams up the Aussie accent. Furiosa's mum is an Aussie. It just moves away from the origins too much.

Overall, it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't very good. It was easily 40 minutes longer than it needed to be. The action was OK, but too drawn out. And then there is the CGI. I guess there was a CGI controversy which I never heard about before watching the movie. Independently I found the CGI to be distractingly bad, and it was everywhere. The crowds were CGI, the dogs were (mostly) CGI. War-boys jumping off the war wagon were CGI. I think this movie would have been much better if they had been forced to squeeze it into 1:30-1:40. The plot would have been tighter, the action scenes shorter and more intense.

Furiosa is awesome! I agree with you on the movie. It's a 9.3/10 for me, perhaps the highest score I gave to a movie in the past 2 years. I might also be in the minority here but I honestly prefer Furiosa to Fury Road. As for why it bombed, I would say yes old-school action is a dying/dead genre on the big screen, not to mention how bleak the movie's universe/premise is. In 2015 people from their relatively more comfortable and secure life probably found Fury Road exotic and exciting. But in 2024, after so much crap in the past few years in the real world, "post-apocalyptic wasteland" suddenly becomes all too real and too close for comfort. I also agree with you that this cultural war has ruined its prospect as its marketing does not appeal to either extremes. Also, people nowadays mostly want to go to theaters for a light good time with friends instead of seriously invest their emotion/intellect in a cinematic experience. If Lawrence of Arabia gets an IMAX re-releasing in theaters, I would be tempted to wear my suit to watch it. But alas, I am just an old-school weirdo.

It was very simple. Miller should have made mad max wasteland with Tom Hardy as Max, in a proper Mad Max narrative film. That is what most Max fans and Fury Road fans wanted. Furiosa was already pretty much the lead in Fury Road, so this read as a retread minus the actual original actor in Theron. I’d say in the trailers as well the obvious cgi was not a good selling point. The trailers for this film showed very much that this movie was not going to be the same kind of cinematic achievement that Fury Road was.

It wouldn't be the first time that a mediocre audience missed a good film - after seeing it, I certainly don't trust those trying to slam it. Box office numbers are no indication of film quality and the idea that this is somehow all about the title is a huge stretch. This movie delivers; it's not a "cash grab" and this situation is more a comment on the state of audiences than on the state of movies. It didn't fail because it had a substandard female protagonist (the writing and acting is very good), although it might well have failed because of some current audience bias against female protagonists in general. Either way, it's one of the few movies that I've seen this year that is actually worth seeing on the big screen, and I will see it again if I can.

The first question that a creator must ask is, 'Who is my target audience?' You can write whatever you want to write but if it doesn't capture the imagination of your target audience then you'll be a commercial failure. I'm going to see Furiosa and I expect it to be an interesting film but I understand that it wasn't the film that the fans wanted. The fans wanted a balls-to-the-wall Mad Max film. Furiosa isn't that film. It will still be light years above the utter garbage that Marvel shits out these days or the dross of feminist star Wars.

Yeah my only thing is They got a balls to the wall mad max film, Fury road... it's a masterpiece and it still went mostly underappreciated

CGI hair at the end was horrible and some cgi scenes was so bad let’s be honest. I think if it used wayyyy less cgi it would’ve jumped off

While I don't think the cgi was great, I seriously doubt that's why it flopped

TikTok and streaming is totally ruining theatrical experiences I miss the good old days that you can enjoy a experience at the movies without someone ruining it on TikTok or Snapchat.

Yeah I think social media as well, people hear things about a movie and run with it without actually experiencing it for themselves

Theatrical experiences are ruining themselves. Movies in general have sucked but watching at home is cheaper and more convenient. I'm not paying 12 Dollars for a single hotdog.

This movie kicked ass. Furiosa earned her way thru that movie and it is just as political to complain about feMAle leADs as it is to crank out uninspired schlock nodding at everyone for points. This is not that movie. It’s a good time
