Following on from his recent acquisition of an Amiga 500, this life-long Atari ST aficionado tries to get to grips with the software side of Amiga-ing and tests what parts of his new hardware needs attention.

As others wrote, the reset is Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga, but it's actually a true hardware reset - the actual reset signal is routed through the keyboard connector, and the keyboard MPU generates a real hardware reset, if that combination is pressed. So it works, even if all software is stopped and dead. Going to this combination and not the 'more familiar' Ctrl-Alt-Del was probably intentional - remember the Amiga came with a PC emulator software first, and not much later also had PC emulator hardware expansions. Having a different keycombo to reset the host system (the Amiga) vs. the emulated system is kinda important... :) Especially in a multitasking system. Imagine accidentally not having your PC window active, and pressing C-A-D, and promptly losing all your work. Not ideal.

Great stuff =D Reset is Ctrl+Amiga+Amiga - they had to be different instead of going Ctrl+Alt+Del lol. To get out of the shell, you type something like ENDCLI I think! Quite why the shell doesn't have the X icon top left so you can just terrminate it I dont know...

Later versions of kickstart/workbench do have a close window gadget on the shell. 1.3 was very basic, but so were all the other home computer OSs at the time.

Hi mate, congrats. The soft reset on Amiga is CTRL+A+A (those around the space key) *Edit:* Now I realized that you have one A key working only, the rest is dead, so no soft reset for you until you fix the keyboard.

I had an Amiga 500 before I first got into ST’s. the TV centric interface on the Amiga was always a disappointment to me. I know with a little effort you can now get them outputting through HDMI (as my current A500 now does) But an ST in Mono on n Atari monitor was just another world for me
