Originally, I wanted to review the Galli BSN 920 Bronze Light strings. But since they sound very similar to the BSN 900 Light, which also sound quite similar to the Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Light, I decided to make a direct comparison of these three sets.

As I’m staring at my set of Evah Weich (light), your fantastic playing helped my belief in my choice for new strings. EP for the ‘creamy’ sound! Your comparison videos have been incredibly informative and helpful. Thank you ever so much!

I actually liked the Galli BSN 900s more than the 920. It seemed slightly warmer. They definitely sound bigger on the front end of the note. I do think the pitch is more defined on the Evahs. Hard to call a winner here as they all sound great in your hands.

That's so interesting. The funny thing is: when I listen to my recordings on this video I sometimes also prefer the BSN 900, but while playing I feel better with the 920.

I think the biggest thing I hear is how much more balanced the Galli strings are. The EP weichs lower strings sound notably darker than the higher strings to my ear. I like the 920 the best I think. They have a certain crisp bite to the attack that I don't hear in the others. The 900 seems to be more present in the lower mids. Thanks for another comparison video, Herve'.

So happy to see this Galli string comparison, your videos are always so helpful, informative, and fun, Thank you. I just purchased New Obligato strings and I'm enjoying them, feel they have interesting sounds within their warm, dark range.

Hi, great video as always! Yes, the differences are very subtle. But I do prefer the Pirazzis because of it's more defined attack.
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 6 месяцев назад
Oh really! Very interesting that you hear it that way. From my experience while playing I felt a more defined attack on the Gallis.
@FrowinIckler

@@stringmatrix Hm, maybe you are right. I don't know. When I listen to the different examples my impression ist, the Pirazzi have little bit more mids and because of that you are hearing in pizzicato a more defined "attack".... Can you comprehend that?
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 6 месяцев назад
Yes. There are so many factors, and it is also a matter of personal preference. I prefer the envelope (dynamic curve) of the Gallis.

The Galli BSN900 lights are on my semi-solid bass for 1.5 weeks now and I really like them - fuller, more voluminous, rounder than the Thomastik Spirocore soft I played before. The playability is extremely pleasant for me. The E-D strings are very well balanced and sound fantastic, the G-string seems a bit cheeky and a bit more brilliant than the other 3 strings. So I made a small mute from a strip of tempo handkerchief, about 1 cm wide, and some fabric tape to dampen the string. And now, after 2 attempts of adjusting the mute’s strength, i.e. the degree of damping, it sounds as desired.
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 4 месяца назад
@@olafluthje1920 I am happy to hear that you like them, and the idea of the mute is very interesting! I also once thought about a mute for situations where I get rental basses (on gigs) which have too much sustain.... But I never developed the idea.

Hey Herve! Thanks brother. I thought the 920 had more complexity. Always preferred them-except arco. Thought the 900’s were the best. Got a Juzek from the 40’s with a fair amount of tension. Looking for a D and G to go with the Evah A/E. Got Perpetuals on top now-too choked.

Tha NJ ks HJ for another great string review. Hey how come the bridge on the Rubner bass is set lower than the inner nicks?
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 5 месяцев назад
I looked at the video to check this but to me it looks like the bridge is at the right spot (on the "height" of the inner nicks - I didn't know the word "nicks" but you certainly mean the triangle-marks of the f-holes). I normally always make sure it is.
@mark-stefaniw
@mark-stefaniw 5 месяцев назад
@@stringmatrix HJ, oh I see now, my mistake was that I saw the adjuster wheels as being the bridge feet. That combined with the parallax from the camera angle. Of course you're watching where your bridge is. What was I thinking. My apologies.

Thanks for another very interesting and well-made video. I like the "new style" with you talking at your desk, it is somehow even more pleasant to watch! I can confirm the creaminess of the pirazzis. But for me, too, this is a kind of negative, somehow artificial creaminess. I prefer the sound of the Gallis - with a slight edge towards the 900 (somehow the E and A sound more plucky to me). Some questions: 1. Do all sets have similiarly thin G-Strings? (That's something I don't like about the Pirazzis) 2. How is the quality of the Galli strings? Do they feel well-made? 3. Are the strings different in tension? 4. Do you think, the Gallis would combine well with D+G Oliv? Have you even tried it? I'm currently playing E+A Pirazzi weich and D+G Olivs - the Gallis might be interesting candidates for a bit darker, punchier sound than the Pirazzis.

@stringmatrix 6 месяцев назад
Thank you! Yes I would say the diameter of the g strings is similar. It doesn't feel super thin, so I am ok with it. I'll try to do a measurement.
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 6 месяцев назад
The quality of the Galli is very good. They sent me different sets. On one string there was a problem with loose windings after a short time. But I think this was an exception. All strings have a similar tension. Yes, you can combine them with oliv. Actually for a while I had Galli bronze e, a and d and only the g oliv. It was nice. But now I am back to g and d oliv and I combined them with old a and e Genssler J-roque which I just got from a friend. Gives me more of a gut feel.
@stringmatrix

Let me know what you think if you combine e and a Galli with olivs. It should work fine.

I've been using Pirazzi lights and like the slighly brighter sound because it cuts through a little better when playing in an ensemble. But I agree the Pirazzi G string feels too thin. I've replaced it with an Oliv G and it seems to feel more consistent across all the strings, although some of the brightness is lost on the Oliv G. If I want a darker, punchier sound, I can adjust my preamp EQ.

Hi and thanks for a great video! What about the 920(bronze right?) vs the ouverture strings. Are they also similar in tension, thickness and sound? I’m playing in fifths so I would have to tune the G up a whole step. Right now I have an Evah medium G tuned to A and it’s a bit tense but works. I’m thinking of giving one a the Galli strings a try.
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 2 месяца назад
Thickness: the Ouverture high strings are thinner. Tension: I'm not sure, maybe the bronze had a little more tension, but I don't remember exactly. Sound: For the low strings I think I prefer the Bronze, they have more fundamental and are probably darker (check my string matrix for an impression). I don't have experience with tuning the g higher...

Tension and ease of use is very similar to Evah Pirazzis. So I would recommend the light gauge.

Hoi Herve, Really liked the 920 . The question , being a hybrid player, is how they react to classical pizzicato? Do they tick/click against the fingerboard. I use Evah medium , but find them to stiff for jazz. I know it's also the setup
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 4 месяца назад
Hi! I didn't try a classical pizzicato... Do you mean a sound similar to the slap sound (string hitting the fingerboard)? I wasn't aware of the fact that this is an important aspect. This too is mostly a matter of setup, in my opinion. And yes, for my taste Evah medium is also a little too stiff.
@Fleoso
@Fleoso 4 месяца назад
@@stringmatrix Yes indeed, classical pizz is more from the fingerboard, at least with a french bow using the middlefinger, then through an across.
