Fair enough it's an addiction, but it's also breaking the rules of the privileged profession of football. If someone is caught drink driving do we ask if they're an alcoholic, or do we make an example out of them?

the adverts either side of football matches need to be banned. I have less sympathy for adults who piss away their money (especially footballers) but the concern is that kids watch football matches and for the past 15 years of so it's been a constant stream of Ray Winstone and other morally reprehensible celebs pushing gambling onto the viewers. We have a generation that has been brainwashed into thinking that betting is a fundamental part of the viewing experience. Gambling has become so intertwined with football now that I really can't watch games with my mates because the same boring conversations unfold EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. It's almost like a meta-game, like they're not actually interested in the football they're watching, they care more about if they will make "two ton" at the final result. Then they have the same conversations about "the odds on so and so to win are decent" - "oh who's that with" - "its with Corals" - "oh is it, I haven't checked. William Hill are giving good odds on..." shut upppp FFS!

Addicted gamblers usually need a crisis point or a bout of humiliation as they rarely seek help through choice. Likelyhood is that Toney would still be breaking the rules if not caught. Accept whatever punishment as a deterrent to others.

The leak could have come from any of the betting companies, solicitors involved etc. I highly doubt the F.A purposely leaked it themselves + they are putting him through rehab as part of the punishment. I think it was about right tbf considering he was betting on games he was involved in, the non-training thing is the only part I don't agree with.

Personally I think the ban is justified. The fact he was betting on his own games is really bad. There needs to some punishment there otherwise the FA are opening themselves up for so many more cases.

there's a pressure group trying (and sadly not getting very far) that have been lobbying for gambling adverts to be banned from pre-watershed content. They even made a very good advert themselves of a bloke knocking on a kids door telling them to gamble, which does put it into perspective how gambling is being forced into children's minds from a young age. It really is madness how it's allowed to continue.

A child watches football, sees thousands of gambling adverts over the years and by the time he's 18 he's been brainwashed into thinking that gambling is as much a part of football as watching the actual game. Although you are correct in saying that willpower is a factor, you are glossing over the fact that the majority of our population are gullible idiots who will blindly go along with whatever is being advertised to them. We can either blame our stupid nation or we can say "wait a minute, shouldn't these gambling companies not be allowed to so aggresively brainwash people who have no willpower"

Money has nothing to do with a gambling addiction believe it or not. Its the same with drinking for the alcoholic drink isn't their problem it's the way they think. All addiction is driven by the subconscious, ego driven, personality mind and being totally unaware of one's true innermost self. The one that you find in glimpses in life. When you reach the top of a mountain and you are awe struck or when you look into someone's eyes and you feel the connection. Those moments are the real person. The addict is lost to thinking with no feelings of what life is truly all about.

There's multiple different ways you could fight gambling and other addictions in football, or certainly catch it much earlier; 1. From the age of 16-24 any earnings over £2k a week is set aside. Players can't acess that cash until after their 25th birthday, unless they are using the money to buy houses, or investing in club-approved business ventures. That still leaves over £100k a year for themselves, more than enough cash to live and enjoy yourself till you're 25. Money from endorsements should also be set aside. 2. As a part of your Football scholarship Business Studies and Wealth Management should be mandatory. Pro players should be actively encouraged to take part in courses for wealth management. 3. Players should regularly be engaging with the community visitng rehab centres where they can learn and discuss addictions. Get ex-pros involved. 4. It should be mandatory for players to have an accountant, or report to the club's accountant. Privately hired accountants should liaise with the player's club once or twice a year, and report how much, if any, money has been spent gambling. 5. The FA should just outright ban of any its players from betting on sports. It may sound extreme but even betting on friendly games of golf should be out of the question while they under a pro contract.

That all quite sensible but a lot of it would require international co-operation to work. If players are limited to £2K a week ready cash in England and clubs globally could structure remuneration how they liked the premium league would struggle with recruitment and retention.
