Jon Snow beheading the traitor who literally gave the command to attack and imprison Eddard Stark, along with Cersei along with him being beheaded, I just love how Janos Slynt gets it from Jon, one of the best scenes. He betrayed Ned and Jon gets to punish him without even knowing. (I think)
“It’s just a stupid sword,” she said, aloud this time… … but it wasn’t. Needle was Robb and Bran and Rickon, her mother and her father, even Sansa. Needle was Winterfell’s grey walls, and the laughter of its people. Needle was the summer snows, Old Nan’s stories, the heart tree with its red leaves and scary face, the warm earthy smell of the glass gardens, the sound of the north wind rattling the shutters of her room. Needle was Jon Snow’s smile. He used to mess my hair and call me “little sister,” she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes-“ ― George R.R. Martin, A Feast for Crows
Fun fact that the show didn’t bring up: The guy Jon beheaded, Janos Slynt, was the guy who was in charge of the City Watch who betrayed Ned in season 1 episode 7. And yes, Jon does know what Janos did to betray Ned. The show for some reason didn’t bother mentioning that, but in the books it’s clear that Jon knows. Jon is a POV character in the books so you are inside his head during his chapters and he mentions in the books that he knows. Just really disappointing that the show couldn’t figure out a way to get that information out because it’s really interesting and makes the scene way more impactful. Also, Jon was extra inspired to killed Janos after he said he was afraid because Jon knows winter is coming and the white walkers are coming, and that they can’t have people who are cowards like Janos because people like Janos are the types to flee and get his people killed, not the type of person you want fighting next to you against the white walkers or in a war. That’s all from the books
You do remember Janos Slynt was the commander of the city guard who betrayed Ned? In a way Jon did justice for that. Also, he didn't really had a choice. If he let him stay alive everyone there would have known that they have a shot at disobeying any order and that could happen in a life and death situation.
You're funny - your certainty turns so quickly to "but then again..." Others' minds trains of thought are fun to observe.😄 Jon's hesitation was quickly abated as soon as Slynt said he was afraid; cravens won't perform their soldierly duties and Slynt demonstrated that when he hid in the larder. Yes, everyone gets scared, but the Wall needs warriors who can be pragmatic and face the darkness.
The first time that Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) had had a costume change since the end of season 1. Williams said that finally getting new clothes and throwing away the old ones on the show felt very cathartic.
Cersei knows who put the thought of her going back to Casterly Rock in Tommen's head. So I honestly think Cersei was coming to throw her a bone. But Margery turned it up to 10 and then her friends laughed at Cersei on her way out. Terrible mistake on Margery's part.
To be fair to Jon: many of the Night's Watch men DO follow him because they love him, trust him, and/or respect him. So his execution of Slynt was more just for the holdouts who didn't like or respect him - he's not ruling ONLY with fear, but he's recognizing that fear has a part to play when the other, more positive things aren't an option.
Joffrey kind of bullied Tommen a bit. Remember in season 4 when he tells Margery that Joffrey threatened to kill Tommens cat Sir Pounce and mix his innards up in Tommens food so he couldn’t tell he was eating it. And Cersei was being vulnerable to Margery at first but Margerys coy disrespect plus Cersei hearing Margery and her girlfriends laughing loud as Cersie walked away, that pissed her off big time
Jon is the Lord Commander, Janos disobeyed him, defied him in front of everyone. He absolutely should've done it...and that whole scene from the beginning of the meeting to the execution is one of my favorite scenes. Jon is a badass.
Here's the thing with Lord Janos Slynt. He's a snake. Yes, you're afraid. But, you're also an asshole. And we are all afraid. Courage is being afraid, maybe even terrified, like Sam, but you do the right thing anyway. Or you try your best, at least. He also betrayed Ned Stark.
Daenerys has someone executed for a murder he admits: Bad leader, evil, cannot ever be fit to rule. Jon executes someone for disobeying an order: Strong leader, good. Not saying this is your take, just something I've noticed. I think that we don't like Slynt plays a part.
Jumping in to say been loving your reactions to Game of Thrones! It's personally a real highlight when I see an upload. Definitely one of the top things at the moment that I look forward too. It's cool that you recognised the comparisons between Jon and Daenerys' executions. Jon doing it is often accepted but Daenerys doing it is often not. I disagree that they are very different circumstances like some people try to excuse.
In the first episode we see ned teaching bran what it means to be leading figure and you need to do executions yourself and be stern when need be... He obviously taught Jon and Robb the same... Coz' we hear robb send the message to jofferey about if he refuses robbs terms robb will execute joff and he don't need any executioner to do his beheadings and we see Jon doing a similar thing here. Jon even stood in the same stance before the beheading as Ned did in the first episode.
janis slynt’s death was one of the most deserved in the series to me, and i love that it was jon snow who sentenced him and carried out the sentence. What’s more, is that he didn’t do it out of revenge for Slynt’s betrayal of Ned or for any disrespect Slynt had showed him in the past. He did it because it was the right thing to do. He could’ve done the right thing for the wrong reasons, but he did it for the right reasons.
9:02- Tywin arranged the West lands, so that each family served a purpose for house Lannister. House Payne was supposed to provide highly trained personal servants for Lannisters.
I am just so jealous of how you remember which song played at which moment. I LOVE soundtracks, one of the most amazing soundtrack in the world is the one for the lord of the rings trilogy. I have seen those movies more times than I can count, starting with seeing it when they came out in theaters. And still, today, I cannot tell you which song plays when other than the song Pippin sings to Denethor... So yeah, You amaze me...
Remember what Tywin was telling Cersei: "I don't distrust you because you're a woman. I distrust you because you're not half as smart as you think you are."
You need to see The Borgias (only the version from America and Hungary, beautiful scenery, gorgeous costumes and great actors... I am silent about the gorgeous dialogues)
-Cersei try to Manipulate Tommen against Margaery, but she understood that Margaery turn him first. She understood that she need it to please Margaery to stay in Kingslanding. Cersei tried to sound useful (thats why she mention, everything you need), but the rose queen, is no fool. Cersei could not manipulate her. Its obvious that Cersei is using High Sparrow in her game. But what is her game? What is what the High Sparrow can do for her? Above all, who is her targets!? -Margaery knew after sex, it was a better position to manipulate tommen. Sooner or later, Cersei will try to turn Tommen against her. So, what is the best solution? Sending her to Casterly Rock. During the meating, Cersei try to manipulate Margaery, but she doesnt know how! So, she try to look humble and make herself useful. Margaery mocked to show her, she was not affraid. Thats why she call her mother! The first solo conversation, Margaery tried to be nice, and Cersei threat her and her family, using House Reyne as an example. -Brienne story is very important. Specially for us to understand her devotion to Renly. Also showing us, that Renly could be a fool or not, but he was trully kind.
The faceless men are the best assassins in this world, but to be one of them you have to lose everything including who you are to become nobody... Once you become nobody then your free to become who ever you have to be to accomplish each assassin job your assigned.
Daenerys executed that guy because he broke the law. He killed someone. She's trying to implement law and order in Meereen. And she should show that breaking law is a punishable offence. Whether it be freed men or masters. The law is equal. If she let him go free, it would send the wrong message, that law can be broken without consequences. And secondly that guy didn't require a trial. He already confessed to the crime. And punishment for murder and disobedience is beheading. Just like Robb did when Lord Karstark disobeyed him and killed the Lannister boys. Just like Jon did when Janos disobeyed. So why is it wrong when Daenerys did it?
Maybe it’s just that it’s unexpected for Daenerys, but I agree that certain stuff she does is overlooked or over judged because she is a woman. It was a hard decision either way. I think it’s just slightly out of her character zone, so it stands out.
Jon is the most like Ned. So of course he meant business with Janos, especially after all Janos said about the new lord commander, Jon would look weak if he didn't follow thru. Jon Snow definitely makes the world a better place and even more so after taking out the baby killer commander, who was paid to betray Ned & kill his men during 1x8 i believe. Jon not killing Ygritte is completely different, Jon was raised right, so he wasn't comfortable killing a woman. Janos had his chance and the lord commander should be feared somewhat.
In real life, Night's Watch would not be possible. To paraphrase one reviewer: "You take the worst scum, killers, rapists, deviants, robbers. Then you give then a fortified position, suppliers, WEAPONS, teach them battle strategy and THEN tell them they will spend the rest of their lives in frozen wasteland and will never know warmth or women. What do you think will happen?"
Janos Slynt lost his head cuz he was a coward and cowards have no place at The Nights Watch. Remember season 1 Jon told Sam that and plus Slynt hid during the battle on The Wall so he’s really useless.
IMHO, Jon should sit the Iron Throne. He's the most honorable and just character in the story... but we all know by now that's just not how things work in Westeros. Again, that's just my opinion... I think. Others may agree.
