In the novels, the Dothraki suggest she braid her hair after Drogon kills the Undying(largely because her hair was growing back, it burned off in the books when she went into the fire, the show didn't bother to do that)and she begins to grow the braid to signify her victories and use it to remember her husband(but again, sexposition scenes were more important, right?)

The irony is that, while Daenerys has learned a lot from them, the Dothraki are ultimately a means to an end for her. On some level, they are just foreign warriors who will help her regain what she views as her birthright of becoming Queen. To me that fact makes them much more horse-like than anything else. Regardless of how well a master treats their horse, they always think of it as a beast that serves a certain purpose (i.e farming, riding, etc).
@treadstone176
@treadstone176 5 лет назад
That canbe said of any army in Westeros. Cersei is pretty frank about what she thinks of her subjects, a means to an end. It can also be said of any army that isn't part of a republican system of governance and it will also apply to a degree to them. Volunteers or conscripts, military decisions are the prerogative of an elite, thus soldiers are always a means to an end for some political establishment. You can see that, in the default militarized responses to crisis by the US political elite more to show they are "tough and decisive" than to solve the problem @ hand. All men become soldiers partly due to the innate need for security and dominance to evade or forestall death or protect their privileges. It only takes a wily demagogue to use these needs to his advantage or clever nobles to secure their privileges under a veil of honor and duty from the common folk like in the North by the Starks.
@theOnyFUFU
@theOnyFUFU 5 лет назад
@@treadstone176 Most of the heroic characters of the show fight alongside their men, are generally beloved & respected by their forces and visibly upset when their men die. Jon Snow is probably the best example of this. Contrast this with somebody like Tywin Lannister, who despite being a military man, doesn't go into battle with his men. He strategizes from a comfortable position, orders his forces to do his bidding & doesn't seem particularly shaken up with his troops dying. When he does ride with his men, he simply shows up when the battle is over (Blackwater, Sack of Kings Landing). I understand that in the Medieval social structure of the show women don't fight in wars, but the show has shown prominent female characters breaking that mold (Brienne, Arya). I think the fact that Daenyrs only "understands" Dothraki culture as a way of using them to take the Iron Throne actually makes her a lot like Cesei. She has no notable interactions with the Dothraki (that aren't war related) after season 1.
@treadstone176
@treadstone176 5 лет назад
@@theOnyFUFU Hmm... You think fighting alongside your men in combat is the distinguishing mark of nobility? More probably its just showmanship or vain glory of being a distinguished killer. I understand the appeal of the Starks or the Baratheons , but there is more to leadership than being Patton or Rommel. Except the frugal Starks, there is little egalitarianism in the Seven Kingdoms, the nobles live in excess while the masses live in poverty and die for the vanities of ambitious nobles. The most important function of royals, is the social order, they build and the laws they decree, that bind and underpin that social order. The Dothraki were nomadic barbarians who lived off the spoils of warfare. Their internal dynamics were based off, endless bloodshed and the rule of might, wild West kind of life. Now that is all but outlawed, as is the piracy of the Greyjoys and the Slavery in the Eastern realm. Daenerys has tamed VIOLENCE and institutionalized it, in the rule of the sovereign, the greatest achievement of any monarch to conquer the Hobbesian existence with institutionalized order. The greatness of John Snow was HARDHOME, changing long standing policy of the realm and Night's Watch by saving the Wildlings and uniting them with the North. Leaders that restore or reform the organising principle of a society are the only leaders worth their salt. What makes a leader in war, great, is strategy ie the political objectives they pursue, the alliances they make, the resources they mobilize, the concessions they are willing to make and most importantly how they institute peace when the war on the battlefield is won. WW1 may have been won on the battlefield but was lost in Versailles. WW2 was won by the Marshall plan, the establishment of the UN and the Berlin airlift. The ability to be magnanimous and make great peace treaties is what made Cyrus the Great, Scipio Africanus and George HW Bush, great statesman. War is an instrument of politics, thus the political acumen and objectives of a leader are more important than their Valor on the battlefield ie Abraham Lincoln. In politics, loving the masses will always appear nothing but just acts of subterfuge played on the masses by cynical elites who are only interested in preserving their power and privileges. Few will ever acknowledge the obligations, pragmatism and audacious will, it takes a to fashion order out of chaos of existence. We will always love to hate politicians and politics because it will always remain murky and difficult to abide to the simplistic morals we hold in high esteem while hiding our self interest in shrouds of sanctimonious ideals and righteous needs.

@@theOnyFUFU It's very rich to insinuate Dany didn't fight alongside her men considering she rides Drogon into battle every time. And before you come at me that having a dragon is unfair, she continued to fight even after she was shot down by Bron and after she lost two of her dragons.

Actually a horse herd is not led by a stallion. It is led by a mare, which makes Dany’s leadership even more righteous. (Wikipedia: Contrary to popular belief, the herd stallion is not the "ruler" of a harem of females, though he usually engages in herding and protective behavior. Rather, the horse that tends to lead a wild or feral herd is most commonly a dominant mare.The mare "guides the herd to food and water, controls the daily routine and movement of the herd, and ensures the general wellbeing of the herd.")

The Tully are the least honest people with exception to the Black Fish. The Martell's are duplicitous to Borgia levels, in the BOOKS ONLY. The Arryn and Dothraki live more off reputation than tangible prowess. The Tyrell's are a curious case as most of their power comes from Randyll Tarly being the best general in Westeros. The Manderly's also obfuscate weaknesses yet clearly are anything but. Strong Belwas is probably the best example of a character who is honest to a fault.

I like the fact that dothrokis are shown as openly brutal and war-like. People of westeros are in no shape or form better when it comes to ethics and they have no moral high ground as far as I'm concerned. But they're able to hide their savagery behind facade of good manners and customs. I also loved Khal Drogo as a character, and i believe he truly loved Danny. He treated her like a queen (when he didn't have to).

To be fair it looked more like one "regiment" of riders instead of the entire army. But it was still moronic battle tactics to just ride straight on. In fact the whole battle was moronic.

Ned wasn't wrong. The Dothraki were no threat so long as they remained Essos on the other side of the Narrow Sea and thanks to their well known fear of water their horses wouldn't drink, he had no reason to believe that they'd be crossing that sea anytime soon.

When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before."* The thing that killed me the most with the final season of GoT is that this prophecy that promised the reunion of Daenerys and Khal Droggo was actually meant to take place in the afterlife and not irl like we all foolishly thought it be since freaking SEASON 1 fml :-(

I always find myself connecting to the "savage" races in media- the Trikru of The 100 and the Dothraki being one of my favorites. This video made me appreciate them more than I did before. you were right when you said we respect their openness. Every one of the nations is savage, but only one culture refuses to hide that aspect behind pretty lies.
@Ezpazmic

But at least the Westerosi and the Free Cities *try* (and fail) to maintain peace. The Dothraki, on the other hand, wage war continuously since they consider war to be a goal in itself.
@poslednisoud
@poslednisoud 5 лет назад
You rather conviniently skipped the parts that does not support "noble savage" idea. 1. Their livestyle is purely destructive, they do not grow anything, build anything and live out of what they steal from people who do. Mirri Maz Duur was painted as a villain but she was right and that was leason for Daenerys. Ends does not justify the means and while you may romanticise what they do, people on the bussiness end of the Dotheraki horde do not. 2. Their society isn't productive in any other way. They have some basic arts and craft but there is no intelectual growth among them and they don't care about outside knowledge. Despite general believe there is no natural wisdom we distanced ourselves from but less advanced cultures understand. Yes, they know a lot about riding a horse and killing villagers and people with no armor but what else but superstition do you expect out of people who thing digging in the ground hurts it? There is no purpose, no evolution of ideas, they just live from day to day like animals. 3. Daenerys learned from them, they didn't learn anything. She has their loyalty because she knows what they respect but they are still the same as they were when we first met them. There is no peaceful coexistence in the Westeros waiting for them after the war is over. They can either go home or completely abandon that culture you like so much. Well, unless writers pull out another "Wildlings" out their asses and pretend the giant mass people, all belonging to different tribes that hate each other and who joined only out of need turn into drunken bros the moment they cross the border. 4. Realisticaly speaking, they are too primitive to be such a force they are portrayed as. Only kind of army they have is light cavalry, only tactic they know is to charge. They don't have anything to penetrate armor so heavy infantry or cavarly would be extremely effective against them. They don't have any technology, so they can't siege anything with a palisade or better around it. They see themselves as superior to anybody so they don't negotiate, make alliances or have any other political influence. Yeah it's fun to dream about different and exotic cultures, riding the horses into sunset but reality is cruel and you wouldn't want to live there for 5 minutes, especially as the unlucky girl being ganggraped in the mud surrounded by corpses of your family.
