Game Scoop! 737: The Starfield Minefield 

Nothing wrong with being critical, but the podcast was really hard to listen to because it doesn’t seem like the guests spent any reasonable time outside the main story quests. Like not engaging in any ship building is mind blowing to me. Not seeing random encounters that lead to hours of side content is mind blowing to me. It’s all there, you just have to engage with it.. It felt the entire time that they are in full defense mode for their colleague. At the end of the day, who cares what IGN thinks, but it would be more enjoyable to listen to with different guests who actually played the game and forming their own opinions that us viewers/listeners can engage with. Damon still the goat tho

Def not a perfect game but for me Starfield is easily up there with ToTK for the most fun I’ve had this year in a game.

Wow! They say they liked Starfield but it really sounds like they felt it was a horrible experience that they wish they had their time back! They spent 80% complaining about the game and 20% talking about positives.

So sams main complaint is that he can’t tell his friend to go to this planet and do the thing he did? He’s docking the game points by proxy? Seems weird that they’ve talked about the procedurally generated planets and then goes on to complain about the nature of procedural generation. 🤷🏻‍♂️

After listening to them discuss Starfield, I'm thinking a lot of the lower scores or middling reactions are coming from people speeding through content. Anyone who has stopped to smell the roses have been praising the game.

Wow if you think theres no exploration in the game and everything is procedurally generated, you really havent played much of side stuff 😂 Im 50hrs in and theres plenty of stuff you can find thats off track, some quest start with random documents/recordings.

Starfield is not a dungeon/cave exploration game, the caves are just caves and not meant to be explored again and again. There is hand crafted exploration set pieces in space and on planets. These guys are missing the magic of the game. The more you play, the deeper and crazier it gets.

Loving Starfield, favorite game of the year so far

The game tells you “ you’ve picked up contraband and can’t land on planets” then when your try to fast travel it tells you “ you have illegal items, enter at your own risk” then you look in your inventory and drop the clearly marked contraband. I’m old but these guys are OLD!

Literally since Dan have Starfield a 7. It’s felt like every other IGN employee has to justify why the game warranted a 7. I understand supporting a coworker but idk, it feels because of the 7. Everyone there has to talk about the game in a way that justifies it. IGN’s standard of 7’s with other games makes it truly puzzling for the audience to get how Starfield falls in line with that when it does so much well and a lot.

I’ve played the game for 70 hours and haven’t gotten any powers yet… you guys run through these games as fast as you can and miss everything that is cool about them. There’s more to do then just main missions, but you can’t have the attention span of a gold fish.

Starfield has it's faults but every game does. The in-game experience is by far the best in a long time for an RPG IMO. Easily my GoTY.

the money glitches/ item duplications you can do in the game on console is hilarious AF. That alone makes the game a 9 out of 10 for me.

Yes, you can enter places with contraband. If you don't take the time to understand the systems as intended, that's on you. You can find shielded cargo or a jammer by playing one of the factions' side stories. In simple terms, he only played the main story line. Remember the one that criticizes the most got to end game without using the ship building mechanic.

Think I'm absolutely going to have to dive into the Making of Karateka.

(saving some space for persona 5 tactica, spider-man2 and some other surprise title). it's blasphemy to say you don't like Zelda games but....i don't really like Zelda games lol. (grew up and lived in tokyo most of my life-i'm familar with the power and influence of nintendo).

Sam's audio is a bit echoey and rough, is the mic too far away from him or somethin? Everyone else has perfect audio, so it stands out.

Spoiler - IGN don't like Starfield. Except Ryan, no one likes it. Just wait till they give perfect score to Spiderman 2 and it looks like more of a same and set in same setting.

They have tried so hard to support their coworkers review here. Complaining they had to youtube one small aspect of smuggling.....these are the same guys that will praise eldens rings lack of handholding. Stinks of trying to support the review.

I'm not sure scores should exclude games from a GOTY discussion. Everyone knows Streets of Rage 4 was the best game of 2020 and that got a 7!

Agree with Mark - a review score should not impact your enjoyment of the game. I've played 50+ hours on Starfield and BG3, 70+ hours of TOTK, 20+ hours on RE4 and Jedi: Survivor, and plenty of other games. Its been a great year for gaming, with plenty more to come. This game of the year talk is redundant anyway, Super Mario Wonder is taking that crown!

Sam we get it you don't like (current) 2D Mario games (always shitting on them, even though they're arguably some of the best platformers ever)... I for one thought the first New Super Mario Bros. was brilliant, and have enjoyed the series since. I agree it's time for a new spin on 2D Mario games, and I feel Wonder is doing that.

Starfield is fantastic! Reviewers who got early copies jumped the gun and tries to be first to crap on the game. However the game came out and everyone loves it. So now all the early reviewers are struggling to explain their early opinions, lol.

Starfield is not game of the year material man... the game is ok but it's nothing special nor it has any wow factor, or inovation..

Might be obvious to some but with IGN giving a 7, how come IGN around the world all scored it higher, why are there reviews not taken into account?

Daemon really replied to my comment about 7/10 being a C- with "incorrect. IGN reviews don't work that way." But then goes on to contend that Starfield's out of the running for GOTY despite IGN's policies.

Sam "there's nothing to explore its the same cave" But you gave totk a 10 when it's exactly the same...every area in totk is the same or from botw...and there's no music in totk so you're just wondering in silence...fun... You're bashing the game for stuff that totk does exactly the same. You complained about being too rich yet gush over item duping in totk...you can get max hearts and stamina from food so what's the point in doing shrines. You can't say bad things about starfield which gives it a 7 then give totk that has a lot of the same things you're moaning about a 10 and goty (it will be) "The graphics aren't great" yet again totk is a ps3 graphics game. It doesn't matter if it's because of the hardware the fact is the graphics are old. Look at a tree in that game... What games were out when totk came out? Nothing...thats why you played it 20 hours over the weekend. Theres been a bombardment of new games recently and great games.

Disappointed by starfield. Mass Effect had a way more interesting universe to (not) explore 15 years ago.

Find it so funny that Starfield was so overhypered like it was going to be this huge , next big thing and then it's come out and seems to be such a mixed opinion kinda game that people seem to have more negatives then positive
