Gameboy vs Tape. Recording lo-fi digital with an analogue 8-track studio (w/ dot.ay)

Take 5 original Gameboys and record them using 1960s - 1980s recording tech. Will it fail or succeed? This is a mini documentary about mixing the harshest of digital bass music with the smoothest of analogue.
Credits: Filmed by cTrix 2019, music by dot.ay, recorded at Sound Recordings (Castlemaine, Australia), also ft. TFATFJ (aka Warwick). Eugene
Notes: Filmed on a Canon EOS-R w/ Tamaron 24-70 mm. Please note we only intended it to take photos; not video! But once we were in the session we decided to shoot this video for you. The occasional clicking noise is the focusing / stabilizing mechanism of the lens (first time I'd used it). The additional interviews shot on an Sony F5 + 30mm at 4k.
We cut a bunch of parts out; but it's still quite long. Thanks for watching if you made it to the end! We wanted to invite people who have not experienced a full analogue studio to hear some of the conversations and feel as if they were in the session. Hopefully it brought you to our session! (complete with thunderstorm)
The finished release is available at orcd.co/ybattyt
For more information on the Melbourne Chip scene, come hang out at Bar SK at the Melbourne Chiptune Academy and faceboook "Retrotastic" for a local party happening very soon ;-)

I’m so sorry to the person who’s comment I pressed “heart” on but then my tablet decided to select delete! Thanks heaps for the feedback :-).

Now _this_ is cool. That analogue studio looks like a wonderful step back in time... So much gear, not a computer in sight (except for the gameboys!). Such a good video!

"That bit is normally not that broken". That's valve soft-clipping and folding for ya. Fantastic. Love how you synced 'em all together. Sounds really fat! low bit grit meeting buttery smooth analog effects gear. That's a cocktail I want to hear more in the future. Amazing mini-docu! Also, the whole studio philosophy is absolutely amazing. No digital, no storage, no automation. Just a metric ton of toggles, pots and sliders. Hell, the room reverb and oldskool tape delay had my jaw on the floor. That is dedication. I love it! And because you're bouncing everything straight to tape, the immediacy of the whole album is really apparent. You guys all dove really deep on this one, and I appreciate that!
@CTRIX64
@CTRIX64 5 лет назад
Yeah - it was certainly a deep session. But also super light hearted - given the fact a storm blew over and we had to get the mix done by end of day 2! As you say, the immediacy was super refreshing. And so much of the shaping and filtering was done on the way in. I don’t recall using any EQ during mixdown!

Aaah that's the best feeling, when a mix just naturally slots together. Lovely! T-shirt came in today too, wearing it right away! Cheers!

It’s an anologue delay. E1005 from the 1980s. Gets duller and more charismatic the longer the delay line time

A lot of that music is just missing layers of depth. I'd be more impressed with a more expanded suite of chips (PC-Engine, MSX, Megadrive, etc...). The Gameboy was never really known for its music. But hey, cool I guess.

LSDJ is a program basically synonymous with chiptune rave music and sometimes strange experimental music. Also, I personally don't see the purpose of recording a digital instrument to analog tape.
@chrism7077
@chrism7077 5 лет назад
@@TotallyGoodatGames It's about texture and overloading signal paths and the way it all gels together in the summing stage. It's just a dirty mixdown (ultimately) but in a way that adds harmonic content and chaos via real verbs, etc. If you've ever turned an impulse or algorithmic verb to full feedback, you'll understand.
@bitroast
@bitroast 5 лет назад
@@chrism7077 same thing goes for why so many people inexplicably can't explain why vinyl just sounds better and warmer than digital. if you're releasing music digitally, it makes sense to beat the signal path to the punch and get analog distortions to the mix before release :>)

A big part of owning an open reel tape machine is it's upkeep. Even back in the 1970's, you needed to keep lining up the machine, lubricating and cycling power every month to keep it in good operation. Components do die - hardest parts to fix are things like the capstan drive and reel mechanics; but custom (although expensive) parts are available. Lots of people buy these used from sellers who have had them sitting for 20 years in a dusty garage - and quite simply, you cannot expect them to work, nor should you even try to power them on! They are a very stable and reliable unit once they are in good hands. Alex who owns this unit is one of the best maintainers I know. We did 2 mixdowns of the same track and joined them together in mastering - the drift was less than 10ms. I own digital recorders that drift more than that!
