We mentioned the Wii emulates GameCube - it is backwards compatible and essentially has the same architecture. So emulation is a bit of a misnomer - but you get the idea....

Hard4Games You said the same thing about the Game Boy Player. That is basically a screen less, controller less, battery less, GBA with video/controls feeding through the GameCube.
@emmettturner9452

Oh yeah: There was an emulation-based unofficial GBA adapter: The Datel Advanced Game Port. It would literally dump then emulate your GBA games. GBA *only*

Natural Mystic Hey genius: You might have noticed that the video was ABOUT sharing such little details. That’s why it exists. People who genuinely want those details will want these. Adding to them, filling in the blanks, and clarifying is constructive. What you are doing is not.

Glad you showed comparisons with the GB Player using the Gameboy Interface Software. Just what I was looking for. Would love to see a more in-depth video with a focus on Gameboy Player + GBI and the OSSC. Comparisons of line-doubling, tripling, and other setting adjustments to achieve the "best" picture. Thanks for the content, subbed.

The thing about low latency through the component cable is that your TV’s image processor will still add latency unless you have a really old component CRT with no digital inputs. For most HDTVs you can get lower latency with HDMI by setting the adapter to output the native resolution (or an integer multiple) then disable the TVs overscan compensation (usually possible in the menu but often hidden/obfuscated). This reduces the effort the TV’s scalers used to adapt to the panel because it will not need to create “in between” pixels when scaling. It should also be faster than component input when your TV still has to convert to digital anyway.

Yes. But you can't use 480p over RGB because there are no PAL games that support progressive scan. Even if you force 480p trough Swiss or something, or boot NTSC game on modded PAL Gamecube, it will not work. 480p works only trough digital out.

I feel so lucky and have the official component cables I was a really early adopter of component on my PS2 as my TV had it and I played Everquest Online and it made the text so much easier to read I then ordered it for my gamecube back in the day. The question is should I sell my component cables and buy the HDMI adapter since the quality seems so close. I can't really tell what I like more HDMI or Component.

Sure show off the NPDP. Awesome vid guys. The HDMI adapter is amazing. FYI: the HDMI adapter does not work well at all on rear projection Tv's. It washes the color out really bad. I tried this on 2 different rear projection sets and it was the same result. GC games played thru the Wii U using VC injection is a very good option also. It's a noticeable difference when compared to the Wii.

I've got a Wii with some Nyko component cables, and I'm currently content with how that setup looks and plays on my LCD TV. I do actually want to get a model 1 GameCube and either the GameCube component cables or the HDMI adapter someday (partly because of the novelty of it, partly because I was a GameCube kid growing up), though considering how expensive a secondhand GameCube alone is, it'll certainly be a while before I'll be able to get one. At the moment though, Wii through component is enough to suffice, even if it's _slightly_ blurrier than GameCube through component.

My Sony XBR910 looks jaggy with progressive scan component and smooth with S-Video. This is because the TV does less image processing to a 480p signal. It actually looks better with S-video. The tiny squirrel on the title screen to 1080 Avalanche actually looks like a squirrel with S-video but looks like a blob of pixels with prog scan component. Noticed this way back in 2003. The day the Wii launched I noticed that a moire pattern my TV showed in prog scan GC Wind Waker does not show in prog scan on the Wii, so I knew from day 1 that there was something different with the prog scan GC output of the two. To reduce the jaggies, add scanlines and let your brain imagine twice as many “steps” between the pixels. It works!
@125conman
@125conman 5 лет назад
Is their a reason to buy this instead of the 150$ EON that uses both digital and av output?
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus 6 лет назад
Nintendo was REALLY forward thinking with that digital out port on the GC. It was pretty much useless in 2001 when the GC was released. The component cable actually has a converter box in the cable itself. The port also supports audio (which the GC component cable doesn't have at all). It just turns out that port is very easy to convert to HDMI (everything is digital already). The Wii doesn't support HDMI at all, there are converter boxes out there that use the component connectors but that introduces noise (digital/analog conversion always introduces noise). The best solution for playing GC and Wii games is a Gamecube with an HDMI adapter, and a Wii U to handle the Wii games.
@richy69ify
@richy69ify Год назад
The official Component cable was for Australia and New Zealand TVs and some of Asia as they never had Scart, but had component as the higher end connection from the late 1990s. Lik-Sang was a popular seller of that cable.

Honestly, it was such a high monetary point of entry for me with Component I settled on SVideo for the GCU in my PVM setup. I could try HDMI next I guess but then I'd have to convert it to analog for my PVM so honestly SVideo is the best for me right now.

[OK, I see your comment addresses this distinction] I think it's inaccurate to refer to Gamecube games on Wii as "emulation." The code runs natively on the Wii CPU and GPU. It is not interpreted. The chips were updated, but maintain a perfect backward compatibility mode. I also would not refer to Game Boy Player as "emulation." It has a set of actual GBA chips inside, so the games run exactly as they would on a GBA (no emulation).

I prefer to use Wii hooked up to a 27" crt with component. I do have a few gamecube consoles and the official component cable (I bought it back in the day, didn't pay $30000000 for it). But the Wii is so simple to modify, so I use the Wii for gamecube, along with playing genesis, snes, and nes on the Wii on a crt via component and use the SNES Mini controller with the Wii remote for controls, and I find this set up perfect.

Got lucky and found a dude selling a GCHD adapter for $40. It's pretty cool but YMMV depending on the game you play. It's clear to me that many developers depended on the blurriness of CRT TVs as some games look pretty bad with the straight digital signal. I also noticed new things because of the better picture. I used to think Resident Evil 3 was just Resident Evil 2.5. It looked pretty much the same graphically on old CRT TVs. However, playing them on an HD TV in 480i shows a big difference. The backgrounds all have a much higher resolution in RE3 than the RE2 backgrounds did.

The component cables were never gonna be cheap secondhand; Nintendo made so little of them because the sparse amount of component-compatible TVs at the time of the GameCube's launch meant that less than 1% of all GameCube owners actually bought the cables. As for the D-Terminal cables, I'd say that if you're gonna consider grabbing those, you might also wanna factor in the price of a D-Terminal to component/HDMI adapter, since D-Terminal was only popularly supported in Japan.

You only have to do that once. Once you activate 480p in a GameCube, any other games you try will automatically detect it. However, selecting "No" to use interlace will mean you have to hold the B button to bring up the option for the next game. The Wii just detects this automatically.

It's possible that the low latency version of the GBI wasn't working is because your display doesn't accept 240p over HDMI. It's not terribly uncommon for some screens to do 240p over component but not digital. Funny thing is my Sony does but still labels it as 480p over HDMI. We have an LG that does not accept any sort of 240p over a digital input.

Diego Davalos do both, original hardware has an appeal to it... The only part that sucks is needing to use the wiimote to start the gamecube game on the wii... but that's nothing really

Swiss can do the same. Would rather have an all digital signal instead of the Wii cables.

Question to those who own this. Will the game look better than it will on a CRT using component cables and 480p? And for those people who have them, what about PVMs and BVMs? Will this adapter make the picture put out a better picture than is possible on the highest end CRT monitors?
@hard4games
@hard4games 6 лет назад
+Phil Matic a 480p compliant crt pvm/bvm will look really good and have no lag (so long as your card is analog). I will say that this does still look really nice over HDMI on most modern displays.

+Phil Matic Interesting question. Looking better on a CRT is more of a preference based choice. GameCube is part of the last generation where CRTs were top of mind so generally they look good, but I prefer the CRT look for earlier consoles. Just my preference... That said using the Component and 480p mode will look great on an HDTV or a CRT. And if you like the CRT look, a PVM or BVM will just be even better. I know my answer is a bit long winded but I don't think you can compare the HDMI out as a better or worse when it comes to CRTs since it's really up to you, your setup, and preferences for either digital or analog video signals.

I got a enKo RGB to HDMI upconverter for the wii. Wii component cables are much cheaper than the GC.

I was fortunate to buy the component video cables back in the day from Nintendo directly, so I think I paid $30.

The best way is play on a modded Wii because you can force progressive mode, 16:9 and use the extra power of the Wii for more FPS on unlocked frames games

I didn't have to spend money---I traded a white wii u gamepad for the component cables. btw 3d printed cables are showing up on eBay to find them type the following: GCMax for Gamecube DOL-001 HDMI / Component adapter GC Video Plug Max gcvideo Also there is a Github for the software the seller likely used in making it download those files immediately! So you can make your own component cables but it is hard work.

OK so what is the best picture quality: Official component cable on a CRT or this HDMI Plug n play unit on a HD TV? Are they essentially the same or will the HDMI device actually make it sharper and better looking since I assume it uses an RGB signal and not the component format? I have a PAL Gamecube btw
@robkearsy2995

Yeah I might get a HDMI cable for The Gamecube since Component cables are hard to get a hold of because of the price.

I have the version 2 of the HDMI adapter. You know the one that Metal Jesus was complaining about that that one girl pulled out and drop for horse playing? Well I've had mine for almost a year and it works excellent. I've moved it around and nothing happens. I would like to upgrade to version 3 but it's not necessary, I love that it looks Cleaner vs composite and my Gameboy player games look great on it. I would recommend one but onlt if you love using the Original hardware otherwise you can use the Wii but it won't look the same, you won't be able to do scan lines and you also won't have 60Fps.

PAL GameCubes natively output RGB - no need for component cables unless you're going to trying to force NTSC games at 480p
@jvcdeadmoney
@jvcdeadmoney 5 лет назад
The only good thing about the PAL Gamecube is that at least we have RGB, and the official cable can be found at a reasonable price. The downside is that PAL games never have 480p as an option so if we want to upgrade to component/HDMI and get the best out of our PAL console, we have to import NTSC games. That's why I think I'll just stick with RGB because it's more convenient and the quality is really good.

"as you can see the wii can Emulate gamecube games" pretty sure it has gamecube hardware, the reason for the removal of the gamecube ports and memory card slots was to reduce costs by not having gamecube parts in the later wiis, I have a wii with gamecube ports.

@Caruniom
@Caruniom 5 лет назад
No, the Wii CPU/GPU are just slightly updated versions of the same as the gamecube. The cost that was saved by removing the ports was the cost of the ports and a more simplified dvd drive load mechanism. Even the WiiU can still clock down to the gamecube mode (through homebrew).

PAL consoles support RGB, but PAL games do not do 480p. Some games can do PAL60 which is 60hz mode like NTSC. Not all PAL regions have SCART as standard. For instance, here in New Zealand (which is a PAL region) SCART wasn't really a thing, although not impossible to find on consumer CRT TVs that were produced around 2000-2005. So we had all of the drawbacks of PAL 50hz and no RGB. New Zealand (possibly Australia too) had it worst of all regions.

I firmly believe that the adapter should not be a rigid protrusion. At least the HDMI port should be attached by a cable so that the rigid end of your HDMI cable does not add to the awkward protrusion you already have.

Is anyone working on a cheaper version of the GameCube component cables? It's mostly because I like to play my GameCube (and anything before) on CRT displays.
@KThxsBy
@KThxsBy 6 лет назад
Gamecube component cables have a special chip inside them that no one wants or can't make. For crt tv's best thing to do is play gamecube games on a wii with a component cable.
