The way you guys play is what I love best with good gaming groups. You are there to have fun. No one does wrong because you are having fun. You are learning a game, and all that matters is that you are together, playing a game, and have a good time. Bravo!

Nikki is right, these episodes are fun for them but at the same time teaching and learning about the game together

I loved watching you guys play! It made me want to play Hanabi so badly. Plus, the beginners' mistakes were a perfect introduction to game play. Thank you!

You guys are hilarious! Thought bubbles! Thanks for letting us in on your thought processes as you play the games. That's exactly why I watch your videos.

When I played Hanabi, it was rife with table talk, and it was FUN! Before you begin a game, everyone should enjoy a cocktail. During the game, everyone should enjoy a cocktail. You clearly need a cocktail if the table talk in this session annoyed you. Let's not forget one of the axioms of GameNight....have a bit of fun.

I bought Hanabi after watching this video and it really is a superb game. Its also a very different game if youre playing with 2 people, or 3, or 4. Would highly recommend!

At first it seemed slow and quite boring, but then I realised that slow and hesitant as well as explanatory game actually helped me to grasp and understand the game better. Definitely a good break from playing with a bunch of overly competitive players for a long while. Will definitely be coming back to this channel.

Excellent episode. Such a great game, subtle and deep, with a mechanism built with only 5 colors and 5 values. I think that Antoine Bauza's work is fantastic, when I play Hanabi or Tokaïdo for exemple, with non-gamers, they tend to play more afterwards, because they feel these games encourage them to be smart, enthusiast...

I just discovered your channel and have been going through the game night videos in order. This one is my favorite so far! This game worked the best with your camera setup, everyone's interaction was great, and it was an elegant, simple game. Great episode!

So, it really is as simple as the rules read. I always felt like there had to be something I was missing when I was reading them, but apparently I was just trying to make it more difficult than it is. Thanks for this, time to get Hanabi to the table!

Hey Nikki, I like it! The next time I cheat in a game, I'm gonna use your "I'm teaching people" excuse! 😂 Only kidding, you guys are always brilliant, and quite a few games in my collection are there only because I've seen you playing them.

Hah, this was much more entertaining to watch than I thought it would be. Was expecting to just watch 10 minutes or so to get a feel for the game, but watched all he way through. However, I think this game may stress me out, haha. So much of a logic puzzle also tied to memory, I'm going to be awful at it.

The version played here has much nicer card illustrations and easier to see colors, also the rules sounds more fun that the rules in the version we have. The version we have also included flimsy stands to place the cards in... they are really easy to tip over and “impossible” to re arrange card order in (which I didn’t know you’re allowed to do) so now I think it’s better to play without the cardholders. The rules to our game didn’t say that one could change the order of the cards based on the clues given, but they don’t forbid doing it either... by implementing changing the order of the cards this game must be so much easier to play. Also I didn’t know that you could ask for free what the player knows about their hand. This version seems so much easier and enjoyable. The way we played is that you have to have 4 or 5(?) complete fireworks from 1-5 or you have lost. This made the game quite difficult and not so family friendly. We played with our 8 year old and managed to win after a few games, but it was a lot of frustration. ( Both me and my husband take gaming seriously, so not only Americans are like that )

This was the original version of the game and was kind of hard to get when it came out. I too was a little disappointed by the changes that came later but I am happy they are there for people to get a chance to play the game. Thanks for the note and for watching. -Lincoln

Between the three, this one was definitely the biggest hit with my kids... they didn't care as much for Qwixx or Augustus, although those were both big hits with the adults. I think kids are actually much more comfortable with not knowing their hand and taking a gamble.

I just realized how intelligently you can play this game. We are cheating sooo much, I thought it's mainly about gestures to give additional information, but, yeah, I'm German 😅
@Mislav88
@Mislav88 11 лет назад
In Hanabi it's not just about knowing 100% what your next playable card is, you often have to ask yourself: "Why would he tell me that this card was a one?" Obviously, most likely it's the one I should play. I don't see anything illegal about that. In order to get high scores you need to be able to "read" from the given hints as much as you can. Illegal would be if you set up in ADVANCE (before the game even begins) conventions, like: "if you tell me this, I know I should do that" etc.

Rules question: I'm very interested about the "I know this is a yellow 5, by deduction" situation at the 44:23 mark since it gives perfect information to one player indirectly (in this case Lincoln who had the other possible 5). Is that allowed? I hope it is, it's a cool move; or are players only allowed to answer with information directly provided by other players?
@MalachiBrown
@MalachiBrown 9 лет назад
In general, the people I have played with only share information they know through clues they have been given and cards visible to all players (i.e. the played and discarded cards). Telling others you know you have the yellow 5 because you can see other 5s in the other player's hands gives other players information directly outside of the three game mechanisms of playing, discarding, or spending a clue token. You can, however, choose to play or discard such a card (given the right circumstances) and observant players should be able to deduce the same information.
@CrystalblueMage
@CrystalblueMage 10 лет назад
Start with en easy convention and build on that. Like: Number has 0-2 out, saying number means safe to play. Number has 3-5 out, saying means safe to ditch.

here as a german hearing you talk about how americans take their games way more seriously and germans probably just would be like : "oh thats gone, nvm, and thats gone too, nvm..." is just too funny. In my experience i can confirm that many americans take their games very seriously (at least most americans i played with) but germans (again ... at least most of them i played with) are in my opinion at least as serious if not even more

"I wish there was a way to tell people this card and this card are discardeable" Actually there is.. you just don't give them any clues on those cards. People should not give clues on cards that are not needed or not playable, but save their clues on cards that need saving or need to be played. So even if all the 1s are already on the table, and you see a 1 in someone's hand, you do not need to tell them. Just let it be and it will eventually get discarded, and you will end up with more clue tokens.. It's when people give random information on random cards that are not needed at the moment that you quickly end up with no clue tokens, and it then becomes really difficult to start saving the cards that are actually needed.
@VidavisPrime
@VidavisPrime 6 лет назад
The information seem too limited. I feel that succesfully playing a card should return a chip to the pool. That would make this more fun.

saying you know you have a yellow 5 and red 5 is legal, no one can confirm or deny it anyways. And you can use that information to infer what cards you have.

It's funny how we "respect" the SDJ award, but when it's given to a game we don't like, suddenly the SDJ sucks. (Just my humble opinion.) BTW, I've played this several times with my family and we all thought it was great.

I love the game but I have a problem with it. If there is let:s say a white one on the table, you can say to a person "this one is white" and he will automatically know it's a white 2. it's a huge loophole in the rules.
@estherpettigrew3042
@estherpettigrew3042 2 года назад
What one calls a loophole, another calls being efficient with clues. Ie: how can I get the most information and the most useful information across with the fewest clues. And as they discussed, one main thing is to provide zero information about the cards that are safe to discard.

The only problem I have with the game is that a group of experienced players could abuse the two information options. For example: I tell the next player they have X Number means they can play it and telling them it is a Color means it can be discarded.
@estherpettigrew3042
@estherpettigrew3042 2 года назад
The fact that you have to point out ALL the cards that match the number or color you name would cause your signal system to break.

Or if there are two ways ones on the table and I say "this is a one", the guy knows it's a different colored one than the ones on the table and that he can play it. This should be illegal, since it is almost cheating but how can you legislate that as a cheat? I am obeying the rules. And worst of all when you play it this way at least one time, you can't play it any other way.
@estherpettigrew3042
@estherpettigrew3042 2 года назад
Why would you call it a cheat? And keep in mind, if you choose to point out the ones in someone’s hand, you must point out ALL the ones. That can become problematic when the person has two ones and one of them is the same color as one on the table.
