In the middle of the big lock-down, when I was cut off from friends and family and had lost 4 friends whose funerals I couldn't even attend, this came along and, on the first listen, got me to release a lot of pent-up sadness. Cried but felt a whole lot better for doing so too. It still moves me deeply and is just one of many reasons I absolutely love this band. Before the song began, Saiki made a small speech which only added to the intensity of emotion, loss and hope for the future the song's music and lyrics express so beautifully. Here's what she said: “We were supposed to meet you today. For the first time in a year, we thought we could meet you all, those of you who could come to see us, but we can’t meet you in the end. I’m sorry. Even though it’s not my fault. We have been having days of turmoil for about a year. In the beginning, we were very surprised because we hadn’t experienced it before, and we had no experience of not being able to meet others in person. We were sad, but we found we shouldn’t be sad in this situation. When I saw you masters and princesses on social media, you were more depressed than us, and we thought that’s terrible. We Band-Maid have been thinking about how to cheer up all of you in the last year. We truly wanted to meet you at Nippon Budokan, but it’s impossible because of COVID, so let’s wait for the day when we can meet. And in the last year, during the COVID pandemic, we have become more eager to cheer you up, and we Band-Maid realized again it’s important to give our songs to you. That’s why we wrote this song for Budokan. We made the album also in the pandemic, so it might have a little similar feel, but this song is planned for Nippon Budokan, and we really want to give it to you masters and princesses now. Budokan is not our goal but just a stepping stone. We will perform at bigger venues, and we promise we will bring you there and give you even better songs, so let’s keep it up a little more. This is our present for you masters and princesses. Please listen to it.” Domo arigatou, Saiki-sama, we listened.

"About Us", in the vein of other great mid-tempo Band-Maid songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Wonderland, Awkward, Start Over, Mirage, At the Drop of a Hat and Smile, is an amazing song and personal message to their fans - a direction I'm glad to see them add to their journey toward world domination. And we get to hear MISA play the vibe she so enjoys. Their new, beautiful DVD/BD/CD box set (with 100 page picture book) of this incredible concert is unbelievable! When I first heard this beautiful song they finally cemented in my mind how staggeringly talented they are. Even in a slow ballad all their talents are on display, instrumentally and vocally, none of them sat back and played or sang basic things. And of course the overiding thing is that the composition, lyrics and performance are outstanding.

I caught COVID at the end of JAN/21 after caring for COVID pts. For three weeks I struggled, coughing my lungs out and completely isolated from family and my 2 little kids. I was really to tap out after a tough 3 days where i barely had enough strength to get out of bed and couldn't keep anything down. Band Maid literally dropped this song at my darkest hour and I cried like a scared baby. It gave me enough support I started to pull through after that. I checked all the boxes of Covid co-morbidities even my PCP didnt think i'd pull through. Yet here I am today. Maidiac for life!

In my 52 years of life, and 40 listening to all kinds of music, I never thought that I could be moved this way by a song... then, with Band Maid, I discovered that I could be moved by a band and almost all of its songs. Not only ballads or slower ones (which I love!!)... how can I explain the emotion, even the tears, that some choruses from Alone or Choose me, or some chords from Yolo, Screaming or Puzzle... Or the mastery of Secret my lips, the beauty and delicacy of Gion-Cho? I don't know friends, there is something elusive in this band...

Just when you think you have seen it all when it comes to Band-Maid, they find some way of going above and beyond again and again. I listen to and like some elements in quite a few other top Japanese bands, but feel as though they are always playing catch-up when it comes to the various genres in Band-Maids music. In some cases they are starting to sound like Band-Maid. I don't think there is another where all the members are so equally so highly technically brilliant, yet so happy and relaxed into their music. 69 years and still waiting to hear a better all round band. Yours, totally unbiased Fan Club member BM..... etc.

Wonderful reaction. I know that Band-Maid's beastly instrumentalists suck up the lion's share of the attention, but yeah Saiki is such a terrific, versatile singer to me; coupled with Miku, she produces some stunning vocal tracks (check out their latest release Corallium). That she can sing so powerfully in diverse songs such as this one, Manners, and, say, Warning, is some astonishing talent. Honestly, when I listen to some of the other incredible all-female bands coming out of Japan, it's more often than not the vocals that keep me feeling tepid. Saiki's vocals I love (esp coupled with Miku); the others I merely like.
@surfingasongwave
@surfingasongwave 2 года назад
She really, really stood out at the Christmas acoustic. The setting was so bare for a vocalist, but she gathers all the attention and makes the room her own. I agree about the tone; so many modern female vocalists (not just Japanese) sing high up in their throat; "the little girl" voice. It's not appealing to me. I like Saiki's natural voice. She sounds similar to maybe Ann Wilson, she just breathes deep and lets it fly.

@VladimirChupin
@VladimirChupin 2 года назад
Well, I also refer to them often as "metal" 😉 I think people have a different understanding of what is "metal." I'm an old school metalhead, and for me "metal" is Metallica and Manowar. This style is pretty close to BAND-MAID's, I would say. But I've heard many fans who reject it straight away and say that no, Metallica is not metal. While for me, Metallica is metal by definition, as well as Manowar. Many people say Black Sabbath was the first metal band. I understand why they say so, and I kinda agree. Classic hard rock for me is the bands like Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. The fans always have this discussion, how do you call the BAND-MAID style. For me, the best description was given a long time ago by Chase Carneson. "BAND-MAID doing BAND-MAID things." Now this phrase is being repeated by many musicians who analyze their songs. @spaolozzi53
@spaolozzi53 2 года назад
@@VladimirChupin I agree with the quote from Chase. Band-Maid have created a space within the genres and established themselves firmly within it with their own aesthetic. My main objection to the metal label is that it limits expectations of them and doesn't even begin to describe what they do. Ironically, Band-Maid shouldn't be pigeon-holed.
@VladimirChupin
@VladimirChupin 2 года назад
@@spaolozzi53 Well, I agree that potentially such labelling may be problematic if people understand it as imposing the limits on the band. But in practice, anyone who listened to more than one song from BAND-MAID knows that they can't be pigeon-holed (yes, that sounds funny, because in this case "pigeon hole" is actually another metaphor, "I'll show you how deep is this rabbit hole"). Even within the same song, BAND-MAID can be punk rock, metal, hard rock, jazz and whatnot.
