With social media being such a big part of today's society it was probably a jab at how people would react given situations like this. Sadly I know of a couple people that would do the exact same thing. Makes me sick to my stomach knowing that that's how some actual real human beings would react to something like that

Because most people in society now days just want their five minutes of Fame so when someone asks what happened they can manipulate the story to make themselves look better or like they were a major part

I was involved something similar that happened at my workplace, but was an attack instead. Whole bunch of people just stood their with their phones and NONE of them call 911, just me- while I was trying to keep the person neck together-and had to scream at the damn security to get a med bag.

Well, the paramedics showed up real fast, so I understand why no one was calling- but the recording part is still fucked up

Exactly. And humans are, by our very nature, social animals. While there are exceptions, the vast majority of people grow increasingly uncomfortable if they feel like they are alone. It's also why we tend to band together in dire situations, working together and watching out for each other helps to ensure our mutual survival. We can even form strong connections with entirely different species, such as dogs, cats, horses, and birds, to the point that such animals genuinely become part of our own families, and whom we would willingly put our own safety at risk to protect. And humans aren't the only such empathetic creatures on the planet either, dolphins and whales have shown similar traits as well by coming to the aid of humans whom are in danger of drowning (and in the case of dolphins, just wanting to play and have fun [which I find interesting, considering dolphins are a natural predator of freaking *PIRAHNA* ]. I've even read about tests that were done that seem to strongly indicate that dolphins have a comparable level of intelligence to humans, such as by the fact that they can recognize that they are seeing themselves in a mirror at around the same pace and age as it would take for a human child to do so).

To me though..it's a shame it has to get that far. It was clear she was being abused..like incredibly clear...and it has to get to that point before people actually do something. Some people don't show signs of depression or anything before suicide...Shiho did.. :(

@@CrazeeAdam True....and she was also one of the very few students who *wasn't* initially afraid of you and who even tried to be friendly to you right from the beginning (if you talk to her in the halls before her suicide attempt happens) even in spite of the abuse she was already enduring from Kamoshida. She tried to make Shujin at least a little more pleasant for Joker even though he was a total stranger to her at that point. And Kamoshida drives her to do *this* in an attempt to stop him from hurting her anymore? Shiho, perhaps more than any other student at Shujin, did not deserve what was being done to her in the slightest.

That's just it. SMT isn't afraid to bring up dark and grim situations to get a point across or add more impact to the story. Just look at SMT 4: Apocalypse, the girl who was always there for the protagonist right from the start literally *dies and gets eaten by a demon* right in front of you simply for trying to protect you (admittedly, the impact is lessened since she is resurrected later, but still....). And in the original version of SMT 4, there's a guy who is literally *farming other humans so that he can harvest their brain matter* just to produce "Red Pills" that satisfy a demon's hunger enough that they won't attack humans on sight anymore. The world in SMT4 may have gone to hell, but that guy is not helping the situation in the least, he's only delaying the inevitable with what he's up to. And in Persona 4 you are actively hunting a murderer, and one of their victims was a High School girl that one of your party members had feelings for (something that character throws in another character's face when they accuse them of seeing the whole murder mystery as a "game") and whose family was providing her with a part-time job. SMT may be more prone to it, but Persona still uses such situations for added impact as well, despite simply being a "spin off" series from the main SMT games.

I remember getting so pissed that she just jumped. Nobody tried to talk her down or save her, nothing. She just jumped and people crowded around her afterwards

The funny thing is, it likely wasn't that he felt something or was fine. Depressed people, ironically, tend to care more for other people than themselves. So in seeing her in danger, it triggered a fight response as he didn't want to see her tormented anymore. It gives them a sense of purpose, even if it's still a hollow feeling, to defend everyone before themself. It's a martyr like nature, they'll gladly sacrifice their own life if, even to one person, it gives their life meaning. Because, ultimately, that's all they need. Reasons why. Reasons to wake up, reasons to live or a reason to die without it being just to make the pain stop.

@Ashelen Well, it's from the horse's mouth. I've been down this road plenty of times. In my head, I invent these little impossible worlds where stuff like the Phantom Thieves exist so that I have something to fight for, to protect people. In reality, I'm possessively protective of others to a fault (it's gotten me cut up inside more than a few times). I become fatherly to others in pain, like I NEED to save them, I wanna make them smile, break the bones of those who's hurt them, see them get better. But, at the same time, I'll never accept anyone's help. I'll never let anyone into my head because it'd send them insane or suicidal. So I find my own reasons to stay alive, it's how it's always been, one stopgap solution to the next. And if I run out... I'm just hoping that I'm a old man with no years left when I do. Depressed recognizes depressed, you know? It's a weird kinship we share, means we can read eachother's hearts in a way.

@@WolfyFancyLads This is true. It's actually the reason I have dogs-- because they *need* me. I don't need me, but they do. They give me the strength to get up and get out of bed, to go through all the rooms in my house and actually open my fridge and put food in my mouth bc I have to put food in theirs. I get sunlight because they need to go outside, I sleep because they want me to lay with them. On a serious, serious note, suicide and mental health run in my family. My cousin killed himself in a way similar to Shiho (he jumped off a bridge). Other notable suicides in my immediate family are... another cousin, an aunt, an uncle, a nephew, a different uncle. And the *anger* left behind from it all is another thing that keeps me getting up. Sadness of course, but overwhelmingly anger. Anger because they didn't reach out, anger because they didn't think anybody cared enough. So, BACK TO THE GAME; Ann's reaction of initial shock and horror and then blind, unadulterated *fury* is also accurate.

Honestly, suicide kinda saves me, no not in a death way, but... thinking of the most painless death amuses me, soon, it'll be an hour, and then I kinda just stop thinking of suicide. It's an interesting technique, it uses all your knowledge, but knowing you can't suicide like you want to, makes you think you shouldn't be doing that.

@@code_Rei Pretty much every means of suicide is incredibly painful. There's no such thing as a painless death unless it's from like the highest point head first the sad part is most don't realize how painful it'll be til they do it. Etika jumping from a bridge is a good example. If the impact didn't kill him he'd be broken and drowning two excruciating ways to go out the pain of water forcing into your lungs is unmatched.

I can relate, I "technically" can't open any pokemon video topic anymore "4 the time being atless" cuz Sword and Shield already getting spoiler as we speak, and the game is two weeks away, it is even harder 4 us with P5r since Japan will get it early and everybody playing it and we have to wait until next year

The teacher makes sense. The job of a teacher in alarming situations is to enact calm. If students gain panic, it will be a chaotic situation

If I was a teacher (not that I want to be one) and was in this situation (hopefully no one has to be in this situation irl) and the person's best friend was in my class, although I don't know how I'd react, I hope I'd be like "hey, best friend, go to her and talk to her!". I'd rather try calm down a class after doing something to stop it happening than trying to calm them down them doing something, because by then it could be too late, similar to in the game

I think Kamoshida comes across as more sinister because his targets are high school children instead of just anyone. It implies a degree of helplessness that isn't really there with, say, Okumura's employees. Also there's the fact that we spend so much time around the people that he targeted and hear about it from them directly

The teachers responded correctly. In that crisis situation it is important to try and minimize first hand trauma. Sure, it seems rude and heartless, however, the average person is not going to respond to "gentle" persuasion. The stages of crisis explain this well with the stage and appropriate response: Anxious-supportive, defensive-directive, acting out/meltdown-physical intervention (signs of danger to self or others), tension reduction-rapport building/explanation. Also, leaving public announcements to the media representative is expected. Anyone can speak up after, important for corruption exposure.

Levi's Depressed Fam no worries, the game really captures how people respond or do not respond during crisis. They really did their homework. One thing I like is how it shows the likelihood of someone able to respond in a helpful manner. I believe the majority of students standing and recording are suffering from bystander effect. It takes a strong will to quickly organize and respond in a manner that encourages safety and security of others. Ann, Ryuji, and Ren are definitely who you want on your zombie apocalypse team. 🙂

Don't forget the dingus who was all like, "Calm down! Back to your seats!" Bruh, a student tried to off herself and your first instinct is to demand your students to go back inside as if they didn't just witness a suicide attempt. Give me a fucking break...
