Games I grew up with: Killer Instinct on SNES 

Good ol days.

I fell in love with Killer Instinct at our mall arcade back in the 90's. I remember the arcade being crazy loud. Chief Thunder's ultra combo could be heard all over the arcade lol. The SNES version was pretty impressive!

Killer instinct was one of the first games I ever played when I was about three I believe. Pretty much every stage and character scared me at that time but it was magical seeing it back then and it's one of the only games that ever time I start it up I feel like I'm in the world I was in all those years ago.

That intro music always gives me goosebumps. Seeing the “Rare” logo, same developers for Donkey Kong Country, you knew you were in for a great game.

Amazing game. I've played it since I was 12. Arcade and SNES. still play both today. 80 hits for Eyedol and 48 for Orchid!!!! Memories

I love KI. My brother and I used to play the heck out of it, both on the SNES and at the arcade. Orchid was awesome, I almost always played as her or Fulgore.

I went out and bought this game specifically... because I wanted it. I also did that with clayfighter, tho. I already had super Mario world, and streetfighter II, plus others..but fighting games were my fave.

That black plastic on the cartridge was so dope. Only other time I saw something similar were the gold NES cartridges for Zelda.

I played this masterpiece first time 10 years ago, fell in love inmediately begining for the characters, soundtrack, lore, combos, etc.

My favorite childhood fighting game ever. I love that game so much because the graphics and the music sound very realistic. Especially the moves, they're incredibly fast and easy to take down on the opponents well except Eyedol who's like hardest to beat but after trying and beating him finally, you deserve a medal. This is like my number 1 favorite fighting game ever.

Turok 2 on N64 had a black cartdrige too, it remind me good times too

TJ Combo was my favorite! And the Mortal Kombat 3 laugh scared me as a kid.

Mine came with a soundtrack CD. I know all the combos for all of the characters. What a great game . I never learned the "shadow" moves though.

I never played the SNES version, but I played the N64 version. The skeleton (can’t remember the name) was my guy. I’d bash buttons and somehow the special move/fatality would trigger and my opponent would get crushed by a rock.

Oh man this is a classic! I had the Gameboy version (yes it existed back then) because at the time we already had a Sega Genesis and my mom was like "one system or the other" at the time.

KI2 improved the combo system greatly by making all the basic attacks flow together the same for all characters. Still, I don't miss that style of fighter. It was a lot to practice.

I got that same console bundle back in 1996 as my first console. I think I filled out the Nintendo Power subscription card and got a free issue along with the Killer Instinct Player's Guide.

I'll never forget my dad buying me this bundle.

I remember renting this game when it came out in SNES since none of the arcades in the area where I lived had the arcade machine. Oh man, trying to figure out the combos was frustrating & I'd end up getting destroyed. Even when playing AS Eyedol! Lol So I bought the "Totally Unauthorized" guide to learn the moves.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. I just couldn’t get into it. It was so clunky. Obviously, street fighter 2 was the torch bearer, and then mortal kombat ii. MKII was clunky, but KI took it to a new level. I loved to mash buttons on that game in the arcade… not so much at home. Primal rage was by far the worst, for snes anyway

I played the crap out of this in the arcade, along with KI2. I think I played the N64 KI Gold game more than the SNES release, but I only own the SNES one these days 😅

Ah, yes, the great Nintendo/Rareware answer to Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Still own my cartridge, too.

One of my fav games on snes

With orchid. Hold back button then forward plus any button (a is best). Shell attack and then press another button after and watch how it connects (one press will equal 3 or 4 hits). While the 3 or 4 hits are happening you can set up for a longer combo by doing the same thing. Also forward down back y is a good attack and combo finisher

KI was the best fighting game ever ported to a console. Such an accurate transition between arcade and console.

If you want to get good at combos in killer instinct, I'm telling you sabrewulf is like the simplest character you can do that with. Let me just put it this way, if you do back forward and any of the attack buttons you'll do a move and that's the case with every character but some characters it's really hard to actually start that move with. After landing that first attack though honestly I just press buttons because I do not entirely understand how combos work after that either. But maybe even look up a guide on how to do certain, because oh my gosh some of them are really awesome! For example my oldest brother who played this game when it first came out in 1995 and I played it a little later than that, he knew how to do the ultra combo with saber wolf. The ultra combo is a finishing move where you do a combo where you have hit your opponent with a 20 hit combo and then you launch them into the air to finish them. It's so powerful that they don't even go into that danger mode when the background flashes red and they have a chance to match the buttons to come right back out. It knocks them out without putting them in that state and you hear the announcer very excitedly shout "ULTRA! ULTRA! ULTRA!" Like an echo as it gradually gets quieter and further away. It's so awesome! Even cooler is if you do manage to pull off the move you could actually let go of the controller because your character will continue the combo on his own. Even though sabrewulf is the main character I would use as he's the easiest to really get combos down with, the only time I pulled off an ultra combo was with Thunder and it was 21 hits. There is one thing I would like to make clear though. With sabrewulf back forward and be will make them charge at the opponent and uppercut them. You can't do a combo with that move, however it's his combo breaker if you want to get out of being combo'd. Also when you go against cinder you could spam that move actually because he's always jumping and the uppercut is an attack that goes up so you can just keep hitting him while he's in the air and just knock him down. I think the hardest use characters in the game are Jago and Fulgore. I have landed combos with fulgore doing back forward a and pressing buttons, but it's not easy. Jago I find nearly impossible to do combos with but I recall at one point I'm at least being somewhat okay with using his sword. I believe it was down back ex and you could actually swing the sword rapidly to make it a combo with other moves, but it wasn't the easiest thing to do. Since you like Spinal, there is a classic RU-vid video from like I don't know 10 maybe 15 years ago I believe it's titled "Spinal destroys" or something along those lines and it's somebody who clearly is an extreme Master of the game who probably love this game more than any other game because holy crap he is incredible with Spinal and there's actually this thing I would not expect spinal to do where he actually turns into the opposing character and you get to use his moves. Yeah you wouldn't expect spinal to be like Kirby in that way.

When I was a kid my mom's new boyfriend bought my brother an I this game to get on our good side an it worked lol this game was amazing! Tip: when your button smashing an they have low health tap L an R as well for a chance to ultra combo.

If you liked the old one, I highly recommend checking out the remake they did in 2013 if you haven't already.

I miss the console version had more characters than the arcade. The cool thing for the sequel was nightmare as a unlockable character and he was op for killer instinct 2.

My brother got Killer Instinct for his birthday, the last game we got for the SNES. I don't remember the Australian cartridge being black, maybe it was. One night I was bored and spent six hours learning Orchid, could combo at least 20. My brother couldn't win even with Eyedol after that. Great music, another genre-defining game from Rare.
