i built my corner desk that is 8ft/6ft for ~$200 worth of materials and the better part of a weekend worth of my and my dads time. its nothing fancy but it is solid enough to support anything i need to put on it and large enough to hold at least 2 full PC setups

I love ash, this will be my wood of choice when I get started (soon!). I saw maaany different woodworking channels and you are first of what I looking for, creative designer. Because everyone can make river table, epoxy table, square cabinets and boxes, few can do... more, a lot more interesting things, even if there are based on the same concept and materials. Also, you are first that use en masse mortise and tenons, until now I was scared that this is kind of forbiden thing to do :D

I really like the straight side pieces, but the veneered round piece feels off, to me. At 22:08 in the video, during the glamour shots, you can see quite a big gap between the veneer on the top and the front section of the corner. also the color and shine appear to be different from the rest of the desk? The rest of the work is awesome, the legs are wonderfully crafted.

Hello. In boat building such method is called cold moulding. You could get a lot of stiffness by running the grain of inner veneers 90 degrees ( alongside to the curvature) to the outer ones . You did similar thing with this batten. In boats they are also adding 45 to get more diagonal stiffness. Love your videos!

Thank you algorithm! Stumbled across your video. WOW! I like the way your brain works. Smart solution for the curved, middle section. I was so fracking confused on what tool you were using for a while there. I was like, where did he get that brush/dust collector system for his... router? What is that? Pocket cutter, no... Then you did the sponsor thing and I was laughing at myself and fully enjoying the ad that I didn't skip through. "Wanna talk about the weather?" LOL!! Loved the DMT knod! I was especially stocked to see the ways you used the vacuum bag. I've been imagining ways to use one and have not made the leap yet. You've inspired me to go down the rabbit hole and figure what what system to go with. Would love to watch a video of your favorite ways to use it and what you found works best and what doesnt work well. Liked your solution for the support for the middle! The inspiration to do the inlay last min was fire! Glad I found your channel. You got a new subscriber!

I am still wondering if $10,000 is adequate price for this in US? In central europe you would be able to buy all the tools and material to build table like this with this budget and still save some money. I would say that you would be able to sell it for around $600 top in my country. No offense, still thinks it's very well done and turned out beautiful.

Very smooth piece, well designed. I would have loved to see a couple of outlet boxes or drops worked into the straight pieces, and the cable management extended at least part way down them (for table lamps and other peripherals). I don’t love the inlay being used to highlight the sections of the desk myself - I think you could have done it just along the outer edge of the assembled desk (rather then each section individually) to make it seem more like a motif that had been intended to unify the whole piece. But that’s just personal aesthetics.

I like the overall design, not a super fan of the opposing grain patterns in the wood, just takes away from the fluidity, Though without sitting down with a pencil and paper not sure how one would really get around this issue affordably. But I enjoyed the video, gave me a few ideas for my own workshop.
@SawyerDesign
@SawyerDesign 2 года назад
Definitely some trade offs. They were all considered. Breadboard ends oppose grain and that’s what this acted as. I think the inlay worked to section each off to minimize that. The alternatives were a cross grain movement nightmare with a desk that wouldn’t stay flat

I'm seriously impressed. You're not just skilled and knowledgeable, you're brave enough to try some freaky stuff. I was watching at the end during spraying and I kept saying "oh year he did too" over and over. If I can ask a question, if I bandsaw a 1/8th inch thick layer of end-grain breadboard design can I safely veneer some 1/2" ply with it. Will it probably be stable (there are no absolutes) like your veneer on the curved desk? Thank you

Nice project as always, just wish your voice matched the volume of music. Turning the video up and down between talking segments is hard for us cardigan/hearing aid wearing folks. I would have only done one thing different on entire project. Your gain pattern on center flows opposite of ends, I would have matched the end pieces going same direction by turning them 90°. Of course it's a matter of opinion looks good the way you done it, just blends weird for my taste.
@SawyerDesign
@SawyerDesign 3 года назад
I’ll crank down the music parts a notch. Audio normalization is so finicky between devices. Could have done that, but harder to stabilize a 6’ panel and lots of movement to take into account, plus looking at end grain at the front edge. Agreed on the funny direction change, but I think the sectioning from the stringing did a good job in making that transition intentional.

Nick, great design and execution. I've found big things like that are tough merely because they're big - shop size is less a factor. Best desk leg design idea I've seen in years with the layers and though, shaped tenons! Also, you just set a higher bar for every other sponsored maker out there because I doubt anyone clicked past it. I agree with you on your string inlay design - maybe the word is, "organic." Question: what width is that tiny, skinny chisel?

The desk is a nice design, only thing i don't like is the veneer on the curved part of the desk. something about the grain being in the opposite direction to the other parts of the desk really is jarring for me. Errhhh… Hell of a lot better than I could do, like, for real man… Buuuut from what I can see, IMO I don’t think the quality and/or materials are worth $10k. Some pretty funky looking lines there. Also what’s “gaming” about this desk? Cable channels? RGB? Height adjustable? Modular peripherals?

Ok but the legs look like they were made out of 2x4's thats not something I would want to pay $10k for.

It's great to see a RU-vid woodworking channel that doesn't use pocket hole joinery on every project! The whole "nobody will ever see it" philosophy is ridiculous & lazy.
