The Gamo Swarm Magnum .22 cal. is challenging the Hatsan 135 QE Vortex .30 cal for the title of the most powerful breakbarrel. We show you the math and let the numbers tell if the Hatsan can hold it's title as "The Most Powerful Break Barrerl." We test the FPS and FPE of both rifles from the muzzle, at 20 yards, and 40 yards. Which is the most powerful rifle? We show you and eliminate any doubt. #staytunedforairgundetectives

I have to say that measuring the fpe at the muzzle and at 40 yards just might be the most helpful data I've seen on any air rifle review. Thank you very much for that.

@@AirgunDetectives It would be nice if U could show impact of pellets,even if U just shoot over chrony. Aha - any Hatsan with QE barrel should not be cocked by holding it by the end of a barrel,U can damage whole thing,it`s a silencer - Hatsan`s words.It should be cocked by holding it in place where the QE kind of ends.And that`s gonna be really hard to cock,but that`s a beauty of this rifle.

To a point, thats why we have measurements like fpe and the magnum actually matches the 135 in fpe with a .22 pellet which has alot of superior factors like lower bc and accuracy. A bit of Vaseline gets my magnum to 35 fpe.

@@whatsmolly5741 hello, I hope you can help me, I'm thinking of buying a hatsan 135 qe vortex but I can't decide which caliber is .22-.25 or .30, many say that a caliber greater than .22 in nitro piston will not work well, due to its pronounced drop and few fps, but I want to hear opinions, what caliber do you recommend?
@whatsmolly5741
@whatsmolly5741 2 года назад
@@DarkF516 I would agree, the .30 cal vortex has about the same energy as my .22 cal Gamo swarm magnum (not really recommending that either as accuracy is poor with any ammo but 1 and its Benjamin 14g hollow points). If you really want it I'd go .25 or .22 , I have never used a vortex but hatsan is very good in general. Another issue is ammo , 30 cal has I shit you not 1 pellet choice its the Diablo match and that's it. .25 has significantly more ammo choices and .22 has the most ammo choices though these Benjamin 14 g hp seem to be the best pellet in pretty much most guns, h n 18g sniper magnum was similar in accuracy but not power.

I love this test, I wish you would do more like this. However in my personal experience in squirrel hunting I’ve learned energy isn’t everything and lobbing massive pellets at a fox squirrel doesn’t always grant great penetration despite the energy. I’m happier with a little smaller pellet going quick that slows down quick once it enters the game and it seems to do a little better. That’s just real world testing in my case and food for thought! Great video as always I can’t wait to see more

Very true on the .30cal. One looses sectional density with the wide bowling ball trying to penetrate game. I shot a chunky fox squirrel in the heart/lung area at 30 yards and the 43gr pellet barely penetrated, it wasn't even a clean entry hole. I think it just pushed the pellet in so hard its skin teared! Cottontails it does well but still does a lot of pushing before it penetrates...

Marty Silver I agree. Most manufacturers will exaggerate their FPS. Sig gives you the actual FPS with a 14g pellet that most people are actually going to use for practically reasons. Most people won’t be using those light PBA pellets for obvious reasons, especially accuracy. People that are into this hobby want an accurate air rifle for hunting/pest control and target shooting. While a powerful break barrel is definitely a selling point to a degree, it’s not what makes a good air rifle IMO. Especially when hunting/pest control you need the accuracy to land head shots for a humane kill. I think the Sig ASP20 .22 just checks all the right boxes for me and the Sig Whiskey 3 scope that comes with the bundle pairs perfect with this rifle.

Energy has a direct correlation to penetration as does pellet choice. If you want max penetration, and have pellet choices, (not many pellet choices in the 30 cal), just go for the energy and you will get it. I think you can expect max penetration (for a break barrel gun), out of either of these guns.
@Patrick-857
@Patrick-857 2 года назад
It doesn't matter. No other break barrel dumps that much energy on target. What on earth are you planning on shooting with it? For small game, penetration will not be a concern.

2 years later and these are still the break barrels to own. Only problem with the Gamo is they can't keep up with the demand for the .22 apparently. Can get a .177 though. Same thing with the 135 but the same powerplant is available with the synthetic stock. So this makes the decision easier. I calculated ammo coast for this test (based on current pyramdair prices) and it costs $3.81 to shoot the .30 cal 30 times. That drops to $1.08 for the .22. From reading reviews Hatsan customer support is almost non existent compared to Gamo, another negative. But if I can't even find one for a reasonable price that means nothing. Think I'll split the numbers and go for the Hatsan in .25 from a reputable dealer. Best of both worlds and opens up A LOT more ammo choices for quite a bit less money. Thank you for helping me make up my mind! Lol happy shooting

Here is another reason why this test is the best test on YT. It because you took 2 different crony distance points for corny data. There is a ballistics calculator at one of the major retailers on line, and with 2 different distances for crony data, you can figure out the Ballistics coefficient, "BC", for that pellet. Once you get that figured out, you can figure out the energy left at any yardage and trajectory for the entire path of the pellet. I used it once about a year or so ago, forgot all about it. :)

Look, for the guys who want to see the same pellet cal. tested in different guns. This is a comparison of the 2 most powerful break barrel guns made today, and how they hold their energy down range to 40 yards. If you want a .22 gun test, or a .30 cal gun test, (to test against what other .30 cal break barrel?), that is a test for the best gun in a specific caliber. But if you want one of the most powerful break barrel guns made today, these are the top 2 guns to test against each other. For the person who is buying a break barrel for mag power, it is probably one of these 2 guns you will buy, and for what you people want to see, (the same caliber guns tested), there is nothing to test the Hatsan against. If you want to buy the best and most powerful break barrel made today,----this is a great test to help see what you are buying for power down to 40 yards. Have you ever seen a test on YT before that showed energy loss down range with different weight, (or even the same) pellets?

After many moons and shooting only powder burners for many years now, I started to get an interest in air rifles again. My first air rifle in the late 1960's was a Gecado mod.25 in .177 and I gave it to my nephew a few years back, it is still shooting. I bought a Crosman Vital Shot .22 a month back but was disappointed in its accuracy, or must I say total lack of accuracy, I send it back. Then I started to look at some youtube videos on air rifles and found your channel. I saw the power and accuracy of the Gamo Magnum on your channel as well as on some other channels. I compared the results of different air rifles on mostly your channel and just bought a Gamo Magnum IGT .22 single shot and a Hawke Airmax scope. Waiting for delivery now. I also considered the Gamo Magnum .177 but thought the .22 is better for hunting. This video just confirmed that thinking that the same trend will count between the .177 and .22. Thank you for this video. Here in South Africa any air rifle bigger than .22 is treated as a firearm and our licensing procedure is long and tiresome. With the previous government it was almost a walk-in and walk-out procedure but now it can take up to 2 years, no joking about that. With the backlog and planed change in bureaucracy it might now take even longer. So, for me it is the .22 or nothing. I hope I made the right choice on the IGT compared to the spring. What it your opinion on that? Thanks for all your videos.

I had problems with my Hatsan 135, but it was nothing I could not fix with my little machine shop. But when I damaged a piston seal, (do not put any chamber oil in the compression chamber). I found I could not get them on the phone, or get parts with out putting my credit card number through my computer, (which I will never do). I had it for a year, modified it nicely, and ended up giving it to a friend of mine. I loved the way it smacked a target though, and if you can find a scope that this gun will not damage, (That is the hard part, and even the best scopes need constant adjustment: Sight it in before every hunt), you can hammer small game to 70 yards with confidence, (that only comes with practice).

I greatly enjoy the videos here. They are as professional as anything on the web, and never fail to provide concise, useful information. I have both rifles tested here, and I have to say they are equally excellent. For most hunting, I will go for the Gamo, as I know I can get a second shot off in a very brief period. If Hatsan was to make the 135 an auto loader, there would be no doubt it would be superior, even though Hatsan's magazine is not as real-world friendly as the Gamo offering. By the way, your trigger screw kit is outstanding, and has brought my Gamo triggers to another level.

I had the Hatsan, and I was able to shoot it well to 80 yards with a lot of practice and finding a good scope that did not break, (well enough to hunt that far), and that had enough mill dots, (big arch because of the slower speeds, but still consistent. I sight in at 35 yards FYI). But unless you are a super natural at judging distance from 15 to 80 yards by eye when hunting, (or maybe have markers from your sitting place if you sit), you are going to need a range finder to see how far away that rabbit is. The good thing about the .30 cal though is, you don't need a perfect shot, (compared to a smaller cal), to drop that game.

You sir, have some engineering experience/degree(s). I learned a little bit about testing in my engineering classes, and do some myself for my business, and I want to say, of all the "testing" I have seen over the last 2 years watching you-tube videos about air guns, (first time today I have seen yours, I post a lot, sorry), THIS VID IS THE BEST AIR GUN RELATED PERFORMANCE TEST ON YOU-TUBE! You used good guns, (is the swarm air cylinder serviceable, to top it off too?), great pellets, (also very impressed at the low standard deviation of both guns), and you set up the comparison with every T crossed and every I dotted, (as far as I could tell). You answered the question about pellet mass vs energy loss over distance with precision to perfection. But I find the 44.74 vs 50.15 the same pretty interesting. I wanted to do this test myself, (now I do not have to, thanks man), and I would have been sure the heavier pellet with the fatter mid section, (less air drag, I thought), would have had some significant difference. Folks,----this is the best, most thought out, most accurate, most controlled air gun performance test I have ever seen on you-tube!! This guy should win something! :) Kudos to perfection before publication. :)

Great review indeed, very informative and objective. The two rifles are pretty much in the same category when it comes to size/type of game to hunt. We only need about 5fpe for small game. At the range within which those rifles are accurate, the power is quite superb. That said, I'm going to stick with my daisy red ryder until something better comes out :) By the way, keep in mind that smaller calibre will have much greater penetration should one decide to shoot a pig in the head at short range, i.e. under 30 yards.

After owning the hatsan and dealing with the company, (and i gave it away to a friend of mine), the Gamo is going to be a dream. It is an interesting gun, but it has quality issues more than they should, (I have a quality engineering degree, and a machine shop, so I fixed some of it), and I found their customer service the worst in all the free market that I have ever experienced. My money says after the hatsan, your next gun will be this Gamo. Mine should be here next week.

Great review. Hatson .30 cal might produce more energy but just barely. Only 5 more fpe. And its 2 calibers larger and using pellets almost double the size. For a .22 caliber airgun to be so close that says a lot about how powerful the Swarm Magnum really is. I will take a few fpe less anyday of the week to have a repeatable 10 shot and lighter weight advantage.

AGREED, FLATTER TRAJECTORY OF THE GSM would make it more usable in the field. Pushing 900fps is all a pellet can handle before its accuracy is diminished. I've been actually experimenting with an old Maxim by polishing the inside of the barrel and have noticing some really big improvements. Cause if you get a light and look inside, the barrels are simply mass produced have lots of imperfections in it, for the sake of keeping up with demand. I strongly feel that if Gamo would build these guns with Loather Walther match barrels or even "like" performance of them it would destroy just about anything that comes in a box. Still working on my project. But I do have couple videos showing how tight it can group at 35yds compared to My AA pro sport. Not to shabby.

The Gamo Swarm Magnum 22 will hit a target at further distances and also has enough power to kill small game or medium game easily at those distances as well. Both of these rifles are very well made and they deliver deadly power. Definitely the Gamo for longer-range and more accuracy. Price is a factor too. $300 Gamo Swarm Magnum 22 Gen 2 coming in June or July I heard..! And you have to realize that that is the full package with scope and everything included. The Hatson 135 doesn't come with a Scope and it's almost $500.👍👍

I wish Gamo would provide a better scope with the Swarm Magnum, 3-9 x 40 with No Adjustable Objective. Ironically if you order the regular Gamo Magnum it comes with a 3-9x 40 with an Adjustable Objective. The Hatsan and the Gamo are great guns and both have a place in everyone's collection. If you haven't shot a .30 cal break barrel you are missing out. It is an absolute joy to push a 50 gr pellet out of a break barrel. Every time I shoot it and hear that lead smacking the target it puts a smile on my face. Also there are a lot of good scopes out there for around $100 that stand up to the reverse recoil on the break barrels. Thanks for watching and I appreciate you taking the time to leave comments. :)

Great video. My only question is regarding pellet drop. With a 177 it is said that the pellet travels "straight" so my understanding is that a 177 at say 30m will have way less pellet drop than a .22 or the 30calibre what is your experience with the Gamo swarm at distance shooting, do you have to compensate when shooting at 40 yards and what about the .22 and 30cal? Thanks for your time in making really informative videos.
@AirgunDetectives
@AirgunDetectives 3 года назад
All projectiles will drop at some point, depending on the distance. The heavier pellets generally have a tendency to slow down less. You may get some father distance with the lighter projectiles but not much FPE. That's why the .177 is more desirable for "field targets" and the larger calibers are used for hunting.

I wanted the best and most powerful break barrel air gun made, and the Gamo .22 magnum gen2 just arrived. I had the Hatsan, but gave it away. Here are my first impressions in comparison to the Hatsan 135 .30 cal.. 1) The Hatsan seemed a bit harder to cock, but they are close. (I don't have a issue with either of them.) 2) The Gamo seems to be better quality, (but I need more time to be exact). The open sights are made of steel, (Hatsan is plastic, and the rear sight moves easily by touch, the Gamo is solid. The Hatsan front sight was rotated on the barrel to the left, with both guns I had, (sent one back)). The bluing seems better on the Gamo. I had a problem breaking the stock cross bolt on the Hatsan and had to make my own, and fix the bushing it went through. That was hands down poor quality. I will learn more about the Gamo later. 3) The Gamo is way lighter than the Hatsan, by about 3lbs. That is a huge difference for carrying and ease of free hand shooting. 4) Both of them have pretty good triggers, but I think the Gamo is more adjustable and can be made better very easily. Not sure yet. (I will put in the longer set screw) 5) Now, for an important design and quality issue that directly effects repeatability/accuracy, "how well the barrel locks up". On the Hatsan and my Benjamin .177, I alway make sure the barrel is locked up well in it's home position by forcing the barrel into it's locked position while wiggling the barrel from side to side. The Hatsan and the Benjamin will both find home better, (the Benjamin is better), but with the Gamo, that breech locks up very very well. It goes home when you lock it up, and there is zero side to side movement. It is perfect. 6) I can get Gamo on the phone if I have problems and order parts easily. I could never do that with Hatsan. (which is why I gave the gun away). 7) I like the weaver rail on the Hatsan, (even though it was a bit crooked on the receiver, another quality issue), better than the dovetail for a mag springer. 8) The Hatsan did not come with a scope. The Gamo comes with a scope, and a pretty good single piece mount, but the scope has no mill dots or objective adjustment, so it won't be going on this gun. I will pick up the BSA that this fine man also tested, or put on my 12oz Leupold that did hold up to the Hatsan well. Thanks to this excellent test, I know for a fact the Gamo .22 pellet will not have over 20fpe at 65 yards as the Hatsan will. But at 65 yards, I am sure this gun will be much easier to make good shots consistently, so I will call that a wash. I can shoot the Hatsan well, but I am sure I will shoot better with this gun at distance. Other than the weaver rail on the Hatsan and more energy down range, so far, there is nothing I like better about the Hatsan over the Gamo. Of course, more time and experience with the gun, I am pretty sure, will teach me any bad issues with the Gamo. But for now, there is no comparison IMO. I also consider "country of origin" when buying a gun now, and I know what nations deserve my business and which do not. Not very many buyers know how important that is. I do. Doug in Michigan

@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 3 года назад
New discovery Gamo Gen2. You can load the magazine when it is still clicked into the gun, but it is possible to push the pellet right through it, and you would have to remove the mag to retrieve the pellet. After sighting in the open sights at 20 yards with my not so perfect eye sight, (an not even cleaning the barrel yet), I can tell you that I am going to shoot very well with this gun with a good scope. Correction on the barrel lock up too. I can feel a tiny bit of up and down movement, but it will stay up when pulled. The Hatsan had more up and down movement, and would not stay up, but fall down by gravity, which is also repeatable IMO.

I like playing with math and found something I think is interesting. From the charts at min 22:20, I figured out the percentage of energy lost from the muzzle to 40 yards, and they are almost exactly the same. The difference my be, (probably is), because of rounding errors, but I think I am seeing a relationship to Newton with the apple and the grape. Energy lost for the Hatsan = 19.3548% Energy lost for the Gammo = 19.2307% I bet you could say, no matter what pellet gun you are shooting or what pellet, that you will lose approx 19.3% of the muzzle fpe at 40 yards.

I think your Gamo may be a bit down on power, (unless you did not shoot parallel to the sensors, an angle over the sensors will read low). You got about 825fps with the JSB 14.66gr. pellet. I just ran mine over a crony and got 865fps with the 15.89gr. JSB pellet. For corny work, we really need a fixture to make sure the pellet path is parallel with the sensors. I am finding out it makes a pretty big difference.

Gamo brought a new version of the Swarm Magnum called Gen 2. The muzzle velocity for .177 is 1650 and for .22 1300. Now the Gamo has more FPE than the Hatsun. With the same 18 grain pellet now traveling at 1300 FPS the FPE is just under 70 lbs. Even with the .177 if you use the same weight pellet, if my calculations are correct the FPE is 110?!? Can that be correct? Let me know because I am considering the new Gamo Swarm Magnum GEN 2. Yes, it is not cheap at ~$300 from Air Gun Depot. They are taking pre-orders right now.
