Daniel Day Lewis OWNED the role of Bill the Butcher. Every line - EVERY SINGLE LINE - was expertly delivered. Leo and the rest were good, but DDL simply owned this movie.

Tammany Hall was a political machine. Think of all that we don't see behind the scenes in politics, and that's what they were responsible for. The guy we saw in the movie with the beard was William Tweed, who was the leader of the whole organization. It's a lot more complicated than that, but that's a surface level understanding. (There's also a unique line that can be drawn to the NY Yankees and Tammany Hall, but it's a blurry one. Nonetheless, it does exist.)

So the confederation of American Natives is loosely based on real gangs from the bowery who were born in America ( largely) and fought the Irish gangs of the five points and some other gangs from different areas. Roughly speaking most of the New York at the time was extremely poor and gangs were massive and had huge influence, over time these gangs would actually become smaller, more organized and would begin the basis of organized crime among, Irish, Jewish, German immigrants over time the irony is some of the people with Irish names were not Irish they just used the names to blend in.

So the bulk of Gangs of New York is focused around the 1863 New York draft riots As it sounds, the union had defeated the confederate army and general Lee at Gettysburg. But drafting in the union army was a major problem, with the rich aristocratic family’s paying large sums of money to dodge the draft, or send these poor immigrants to fight in their behalf. The Irish, most notably, were not allowed jobs and were treated harshly against other Irishmen who dubbed themselves as “Ulster Scots” or “Ulster Irish” (which they still do today) to differentiate themselves from the “leeches” coming off the boats. But for one, the countless losses before Gettysburg at Fredericksburg or Chancellorsville made the people of the north upset at so much bloodshed that they had enough. For the immigrants, if blacks were to be free, they’d have a competitor group looking for jobs. Same went for the confederate Irishmen, but also because they had become accustomed to the southern slave system. The draft riots lasted from July 13-16th. These troops shown were men fresh from the Gettysburg fields. Including numerous handfuls of my own family members. They had no time to deal with this, and their rage was unleashed.

Learn history homey. We didn't take over no peaceful land of natives. We took over a country that had multiple tribes killing each other and doing nothing with this land for over 10k years. We beat savages and made the greatest country to exist on earth

Bro goes “What about the natives living here before y’all? They were living all peacefully” 😂😂😂 Clearly someone who hasn’t studied history. Native Americans were anything but “peaceful”
@MajorReacts
@MajorReacts 11 месяцев назад
So what Christopher Columbus did to the natives was peaceful? Trick them by giving them gifts with smallpox and other diseases which they had no immunity to and died from. Then, they pushed them out of their land, which they were living PEACEFUL in living off the land. You might consider them not peaceful, but how can you be when your people are being extinct? You have no choice but to fight back. Now, let's understand something it's been like this forever conquer territory and rewrite history. But every civilization was peaceful at one point until invaders came in and took over.
@housebeats31
@housebeats31 10 месяцев назад
@@MajorReactsI don't think the gentleman said anything about Christopher Columbus and if you think that the native tribes were peaceful before foreigners came. Then you need to learn about all the Indian tribes. The point I'm trying to make is no race of people that exist have clean hands.
