EconoChallenge Hi Jeep...this was more a presentation than a review...but I have modified the edge and I am carrying it in order to review it... I hope that you are happy with the Trekker! I also like that model
dear dennis! i have that ganzo myself and i am wearing and testing it since weeks now. i saw that picture on fb too. i think you mean that pic on ronnys video comments from ls. yeah.. it maybe is a replica or a clone... i think its a improved and better knife with the different habdle and the axis lock. great video as always my friend! love it ; ) take care and all the best from germany, arthur
Lellobeetle The materials used on the SR1A are of better quality, and you can feel it in hand right away. If you are looking for an edc that is beautiful and fun to play with while also being able to handle harder tasks I can only recommend the SR1A. But if you are looking for a dirt knife, something you might use/abuse on a daily basis...the 720 will do. I have started testing it and so far I like it
I'm waiting on 2 Ganzo's to be delivered within the next few days. I purchased the g720-g which is the sr-1 clone. And a g712 which seems to be a benchmade bedlam clone. They both look great and are about 40 bucks combined. The lionsteel, and benchmade combined would have been close to 400. Not too shabby, can't wait to check them out.
I've bought two knives from gear best and it took them a week just to ship them (Swedish post) ... two weeks later still waiting but the redundant tracking information is a source of comfort, so congrats on receiving yours so fast.
Thanks for the presentation! I haven't seen either of them before ... well, but then again I don't know much about folding models :o) Best greetings, Tim
Steintanz Thanks Tim, I have started using it in the woods after i modified the edge angle...I must say, except for the weight it is a pretty good choice, once you get the edge to perform for wood tasks.
Andi1878 I started testing it after I modified the edge angle. So far so good. I even split some thinner pieces of wood with it...no damage...so far :)
mikedifeo I started testing it. Split a 2 inch piece of wood with it (unlocked) and split the halves with the lock engaged...no damage...I will keep testing it and make a video
I have two of these, a green one and an orange one. I share your impressions of them. It usually takes around 4 weeks to get shipments from Gearbest here in the US.
Frumos briceagul,am ramas oarecum surprins sa aflu ca e facut in China! Am vrut sa comand de pe site-ul specificat de tine un alt cutit... Cima 1... dar fiindca nu am facut nici o comanda din afara pana acum ,am avut retineri! Daca nu cer prea mult imi poti spune daca specifici in comanda aresa ta ,si cum faci plata multam anticipat!
That's great shipping time! They must be better to Europe than to me here in the U.S. because whenever I've ordered from Gear Best, it takes about a month (seriously) to arrive here. But their prices are amazing so I don't mind. I like that knife too. I saw another review of a slightly different Ganzo knife yesterday and the guy battonned through wood with it and that knife had a stop pin that split due to the strain and it turned out that that knife had a tubular stop pin, and that was why it split. I don't t think yours has that, but I'm not sure. I've heard good things about Ganzo too. Enjoy!
traderjoes I just ordered a g710 today. I'll have to see if the shipping will be as fast this time. I also batoned this one yesterday. Nothing heavy. A 2 inch long. Once with the lock disengaged and the second time locked. I will keep testing it and when I am done testing I will probably baton it some more. I always was curious how much an axis lock can take. The G710...I can't wait for it. It is a Rift lookalike...I couldn't bring myself to spend the money on a Rift not knowing if I'll like it or not...but if I like the G710...I might actually go ahead and look into the Rift.
Only heard good things about them. And they look very nice in my opinion. Steel quality should be okay. But I understand your point with the handle thickness. But may be good for wearing as edc in pocket with only 0,205kg.
Coronos I started carrying it. I modified the edge angle and I honestly do not mind the weight. I like the thicker handle, it works for me. That was one problem I had with the SR1A..it was a bit too thin and the edges were a bit sharp
Like you, I recently received my first Ganzo knife, the Ganzo G727m which is the knock off of the Ontario Rat-1. I am constantly surprised at how well it feels and performs for the price. I'm used to quality folding knives in the $100 to $300 range and yet since I bought this Ganzo G727m, its the only one I carry. I like that its strong, no blade play, axis lock, feels good in hand and 440C is not exotic but its a fine steel if you don't mind a quick strop or hone now and then. My favorite feature is that it's less than $20 and I don't mind beating on it. I typically prefer made in USA or Germany just because of the quality trends, but Ganzo is doing a great job IMO. I just hope they keep it up and not reduce quality or raise prices once everyone else starts buying them up.
+Aaron Harris I feel the same way as you do...I ordered 2 more models..the g710 and the g704...I hope that they behave the same way this one did...although i do not intend to put them thru the same treatment that I put this one thru.... :)
23madskilz23 I modified the edge angle. It was quite a bit of work. But now it can cut thru just about anything. I will also test the edge retention. Last weekend I have batoned a piece(2 inch in diameter) of wood with it and it did that very well...
LPD Hartman I knew about ganzo but I never minded them. Truth is: the have a few very interesting designs...ordered myself a g710 today...can't wait to see how it feels in hand
+cwrowe yes and no...the G720 feels more stable but the Griptilian is a different breed....much better for finer edc tasks...If I were to chose one...I would go with the G720 because it costs less and it can take a beating...watch my other video....
Very interesting knifes. They look very heavy duty. Like you, I never cared for the lack of symmetry of the frame locks. I kind of like the Ganzo best. Always nice to listen to you Denis. Tonight was no exception. :-)
saradreaming Thank you Sara. I always had a problem with how Frame locks feel in the hand myself...they are nice and when you have an extra locking system like the roto-block it can come in handy. The g720 is heavy and feels better in hand. I also did some small wood splitting with it...so far so good. We'll see how it does in the long run
Very good first looks buddy! I really like the affordability of this one. SR1 is still my favourite folder and cherished gift Denis. I eagerly await your review on this knife. :) Be well my friend. Craig
Forestwalker111 Hey buddy... The SR1A is clearly better quality but this one has its advantages. I have modified it and started carrying it and testing it. We'll see how it turns out. Have a safe trip
+diadora9292 I assume you are talking about the axis lock...yes...I think they are well made...but I do find them a bit stiffer in the beginning....however I abused the G720 and it is still in one piece...that has to mean something....
I take it you haven't tried the cold steel triad lock ( the very strongest lock on the market ) cold steel kicks so much ass that reviewers don't bring cold steel up because they have to say its a better lock than the knife they're reviewing ( if they're honest anyway)
_That's_ why they don't bring up cold steel knives during the review of a different knife? If I review a Toyota, am I being dishonest by not talking about your mother's Geo metro?
I agree axis locks are very stable, but they are a weak link in my opinion.. only a spring holding it in place essentially. If that spring fails, or even if the bar slips back under pressure (theoretically it should stick more under pressure) but it depends on the knife design. I think lock backs are slightly better and then frame locks, or a well made thick liner lock being best * Safety first* and the reason being for this opinion is that if the axis fails you loose a finger, whereas with a strong frame lock, there is almost zero possibility of this, because if the frame lock, or even liner metal fails, it very rarely would snap or deform outwards* and therefore it usually bends inwards and the only hindrance would be not being able to close it again, which is FAR better than loosing fingers, and we all know the weight and size of this ganzo blade is more than enough to do this with *, perhaps not even battoning either !.. Furthermore, a solid frame lock with a limited weakened point would be ideal as if you are holding the handle securely and pressing it tight for heavy use then it would bend inwards even with a poorly designed frame lock knife, so again, safety is increased a great deals vs other knives.
+TeslasLoveChild I think that the axis lock is the best mechanism to take abuse. can a locking folder close on your fingers? Yes! But that is true with any locking mechanism. A frame lock can break off...a liner lock too...and back-locks...well I have seen them fail. I think there is a russian fellow who showed his Pohl Force failing... But after what I did with this one...I doubt it will fail. However...if that is what concerns people most...a fix blade is the way to go...
SpartanJohns I suppose.. Then again, I use a small hatchet for batoning and chopping wood so personally I wouldn't really have this problem, which is why I then hold a folder instead of a full tang as it is smaller, lighter and less of a burden (taking it out of a sheath) for example
Similarly, I've had axis locks fail on me, frame locks and several lock backs* though they weren't triad lock backs or whatever that latest design is which seems good.. funnily enough, despite youtube videos showing average failure for liner locks being much less than other types, my thick liner locks have held up pretty good over the years
Melusine Centun I modified the edge angle and started testing it...I hope it manages to hold an edge for at least 1 day with regular edc tasks...if it does that..it will be good enough for me. I am not expecting it to hold an edge like some others... Sanrenmu, while they might not look as cool, hold an edge really well...I have been playing with the 910+ and I really liked it
+Fredrik Klintberg That shape of the blade was why I liked the SR1A. But it does make more sense to take the G720 as a skinning knife...simply because of the pricepoint
+SpartanJohns A skinner doesn't really need to wear down due to sharpening. I´d go for the beaver with it. Beavers are bitches to skin and many a more traditional knife would do the job better.
+SpartanJohns I´m no pro but my Mora 2000 was ok for the job with the beaver but could have been better if it was half the size and perhaps a grade better steel.
