I have been coaching for 50 years and this is one of the best and clearest explanation of ANY blocking concept! Well done!

Interesting. Thank you coach. I'd expected 1 and 2 to be swapped since the rule is "Gap - Over - Backer" ... 1) backside gap 2) head on lineman 3) Backer and actually this is what you do on the 3rd example, you follow the same order as i described otherwise the center should be supposed to hit the Nose in a 0 tech.

Any blocking scheme that starts with ON is easily foiled. Gap has to come first. A smartass DC will put DL on 0 and 2 with a split call and have an LB blitz the A gap. GOD fixes this by going GAP first and having the next OL pick up the ON main inside as a DOWN block.

Against the 3-4 we like to have the Playside OG read the 0 technique. If the 0 tries to work to the inside of the C the Playside OG will release his down block and seek out the Rover. If the 0 tries to work into the double team the Playside OG will counter off of down block once 0 is controlled will work up field looking for a seal instead of seeking out the Rover.

vs an 8 man box in 21 personnel from the shotgun [split backs] I like to sift block my BST up to the Will backer and read the end while still using Power Blocking rules. You can also read the Will while turning out on the BSDE using from 21 personnel [split backs] still with power blocking rules.

Back side Tackle usually would hinge block inside B gap. That's for blitz. 9 tech if he wrong arms, now depending where the 9 tech attacks whether guard would log block or the FB would log block if 9 tech attacks FB. RB must read guards block. RB steps are also important for the timing of FB and pulling guards blocks.

I had no idea play design was this complicated! I'm used to "go to the mailbox and slant right". But I always wondered when looking at play diagrams, like how do they know the guys you're assigned to are going to be in whatever formation or place, like how do you know where to draw those blocking lines to know the play will work? Yeah this video went over my head but I found it educational nonetheless. I guess my question would be: Are those rules at the top specific for power runs, and you'd apply the same rules no matter the gap you're running in, or your own offensive formation? And then for other types of runs you'd have different sets of rules? It would be awfully confusing if you had to build different sets of rules for each of the 100-200 plays in the book. And do you change the rules for different opponents' strengths and formations, or do you just put in a different group of plays with rules that take advantage of their weaknesses?

do you have any changes when a LB is blitzing in a gap? If so, how do you make adjustments to pick up the blitzes?

Curious to see how to block a 4-3 over or under from the shotgun, 20 personnel [split backs] Y or TE in the slot backside and playside

what if there is a SS playing at the second level over the TE in the last diagram? would he be the point man or would the TE block him?

One thing that confuses me is when you say things like 2 technique or 4 or 6, like that OL diagram at the very top. Is that explained in another video? I assume the technique numbering is different than the hole numbering?

What about power vs a 4-4? Where should I hit the line as the ballcarrier?

What about a 5-2 or 5-3 with both def tackles head up on the guards and the mike shoots the A Gap. What do you suggest?

We just faced a 52/53 defense this weekend and we ran the Tackle trap and Power and inside zone plays from the Double Tight Formation with a single back and that stretched the defensive line out enough to attack the gaps. Hope this helps...!

vs a 5-2 or 5-3 you should be running RPOs

In the 2 nd example, the 9 tech would blow this up???? I’ve never seen power play work w no double team? Why waste a blocker on backside LBer in a 4-3? He isn’t part of the play. Bootleg and too would stop needing to block him. Anybody got actual film of this type blocking scheme?

how do you run this against a 44 defense

Center has anyone from zero gap to backside 4 gap. However, your rules seem inconsistent and maybe you can clarify the difference between diagram 3 and 4. But they seem to be very similar. The center has zero tech in each diagram and although he has a 3 tech in diagram 3 and a 4 tech in diagram 4 both would fall in that zero to 4 tech backside responsibility. Therefore as I understand your rules the center should block head up (zero tech) before going for the 3 tech. However, I agree that you must prevent penetration through the pulling guard hole so blocking the 3 tech before the zero tech makes sense. It is just that the rules does not seem to apply in the right order.
