This is what RU-vid is for. People like you who know what they're doing, showing people like me who have no idea. You saved me so much time and possibly money to fix something that took only a few minutes to correct. I also appreciate that your video was short and to the point. Thank you Sam!
Thank you Sam! The garbage disposal stopped yesterday. After about half an hour using the allen wrench and resetting the button and I filled the sink with water and used a plunger to get other part of rock out stuck in between it finally flushed out and the garbage disposal works again. Your helpful video and thoughtfulness to help others is a GOD Send. THank you!
I was on my way to Home Depot to replace mine and found your video. Saved me $150 and learned a valuable lesson. This first time homeowner thanks you sir!
This video just saved me a few hundred dollars. Spinning with the hex wrench worked but the item quickly jammed again. I had to removed the unit and turn it upside down while shaking it. I put my hand on the blades to make sure they weren't the source of the noise. After some shaking a badly battered pokemon coin fell out. Good as new, now. Thank you so much.
Thank you good sir! This helped me get my garbage disposal up and running again. I had thought the issue was electrical and thank goodness I didnt call an electrician! People like you make RU-vid worth its weight in gold.
I was about to go to Lowes today to buy a new disposal but came across this video before leaving. WOW...I'm so happy I did. This video helped me resolve the problem I was having with my disposal. Thank you so much for sharing these tips!!!
I purchased a new replacement disposal unit and started clearing the area under the sink. For the heck of it, I got out the disposal wrench and proceeded to rotated the "non functioning rotor" in a more aggressive manner. I ran hot water for a few minutes and turned on the disposal and it sounded like it was going to "give". I started and stopped the disposal several times with the hot water running and now it works!! Thanks Sam!!!
Sir, as of this writing, it is the evening of July 4th, 2023...and I ran into this problem. Your video was clear, concise, simple and 'dead-on' accurate. I was lucky that I didn't have to 'fish' for any debris after using the 'allen' wrenches. THANK YOU very much for taking the time to show this.
I knew about cranking the bottom and about the reset button, and, of course, clearing the blades. I was able to get it restarted, but it wouldn't start up again after turning it off. After watching the video, I got the disposal working again and just listened for a minute. Yup, there was something in there. On a hunch, I got a heavy-duty magnet on a string that we use for picking up nails when we are renovating. I put it down the drain and up came, believe it or not, practically a twin to what you pulled out of your disposal! A tiny, unidentifiable piece of metal! Such a tiny speck of a thing causing so much time and trouble. Everything is working just fine now. Thank you for a nice, clear video.
I just want you to know that my garbage disposal was humming and the water wouldn't drain for about 3 months. I was stressing, thinking I was going to have to buy a new one and spend hours trying to install it, but I just watched your video, did as you instructed, got what was stuck in one of the blades loose and now it's working again. Thank you so much for this video!!
Listen up folks, this guy knows his stuff.... My garbage disposal was doing the exact same thing...humming with the reset popped. To make it worse there was a burnt metal smell under the sink. I unplugged it tried "this" with an Allen wrench and it turned freely both directions...stuck my hand and found a penny and a rubber earbud chewed up. Took them out plugged it in and hit the switch...worked like a new disposal. Thank you
I deal with jammed disposals all the time in rental property. Here's a few more tips. 1) Wet your hand before you stick it down in the disposal. If you have big hands and they are dry it can be very hard to get your hand back out, especially if you are now holding something that makes your fist a little larger. Your hand will slide out much easier when it is wet. Obviously, as stated in the video be SURE the power is off. 2) With some disposals, the rubber sleeve you seen when looking down from above the sink will come out. Just pull it straight up. If so, that will let you see down into the unit much easier. Use a flashlight to look around. Be sure to replace the sleeve. 3) Manually using the tool to try to turn the unit and free the obstruction, and pushing the red reset button, will not fix a unit that has rusted out. When the unit rusts out, and eventually they all will, pieces of the unit break off internally and jam the unit in ways that you cannot unstick. When that happens, its time to give up and purchase a new unit. Most disposals have a fairly short life span. Cheap ones can fail in about 3 years of normal use. Better quality units may last 5 to 7 years. But the units have metal parts and are exposed to water so they just cannot last forever if they are in daily use. Labor cost to remove an old unit and install a new one can mount up, especially if the plumbing under the sink needs to be reworked for some reason. But if there is a need to rework any sink plumbing or replace any sink components, the best time to do that is when the old disposal is out of the way. For rental units which are generally abused by most tenants, I use the cheaper models and just replace them as needed. For my personal home or a home being renovated for sale to owner occupants, I highly recommend buying at least a 1/2 hp motor or larger. Top quality units cost more but are well worth the money. They have the power to grind through nearly anything and break it down into smaller pieces that easily go through the drain. The last thing you need is to buy a cheap unit that doesn't break down food enough and then have to call a plumber to clear a clogged drain!
Thank you so very much for this video. Our disposal was humming and then automatically shut off. No sound or movement rest of the day. I went to get ready to go to store and decided to look at videos. Yours came up. Went got Allen wrench and tried this technique. Yours saved me $150+/-. Not sure how long our disposal will last since the average states 7 to 8 years but this saved the day. Will see what happens as I cook dinner and clean up. Thank you again for your precise video!!!!
Thank you a millions times! I was able to clear the jam and I used the wrench in the bottom as you described and illustrated and it worked! Thank you so much! It’s the holidays and the sink is in the highest demand. 😉☺️😊
Thanks so much Sam! My garabage disposal had the humming sound for a few days. Last night, I watched part of your video. I was able to unplug my garabage disposal and then manually turn in with an Allen wrench that was already underneath my sink (I live in a duplex). I plugged my garbage disposal back in, and it started working again. Thanks again! :)
Thanks. This helped me fix my disposal which was just humming. I found an alan wrench, turned it, hit the switch and we were back in action. I appreciate you taking the time to help me.
Stressed because garbage disposal wasn’t working and Just overpaid on an installation of a backsplash so I was feeling really down, until I watched this video and fixed my disposal, I feel so much bette, weird lol but thank you for taking the time to upload this!! Your awesome💪🏼
Thank you SO much for making this video. Your instructions & video were crystal clear and taught me more about how these machines work. Didn't know about the accessible parts on the bottom of the disposal until your video, and the allen wrench trick absolutely saved me the hassle of calling my landlord or a plumber. I dumped old chicken soup down the disposal and apparently didn't get all the bones out beforehand. The disposal clogged up & hummed, but when I reached in the sink drain to pull it out, I couldn't find the bone. I ran the water & got the blades turning with the allen wrench & some effort, then tried reaching in again to clear the bone; still couldn't find it. Ran the water & used the allen wrench again, turned the disposal on & off in short bursts with the water running, and the clog cleared itself.
Thank you so much. I had just spent $ 175 to have disposal reinstalled one morning it just dropped to the bottom on cabinet. Highway robbery plus reconnecting pipes that was leaking that they installed . Well my disposal hasn’t worked for a week your video was the first I saw and thank you it worked. Had the tab from a pull top of a soda can . Thanks
Didn't know it was that simple, got a bone stuck in the blades. So satisfying when I got it out and get the thing working again. Thanks alot for this video.!
Haven't had a disposal for over 3 weeks. This resolved my issue in all of 15 seconds. Thanks for posting this. $125 and a trip to Home Depot saved. Now, it's time to strategically place water and gloves to convince the wife this was a 3 hour process!
This is a great short and to the point and very helpful video, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, I literally just used this and the thing that took me the longest was finding the right fit and getting comfortable with being uncomfortable down there, thx again, stay safe.
idk yet but I'm going to subscribe before I try simply because you are one of the ONLY vids (believe me I've watched a TON) that gives me hope!!!! ty!!!
You absolute legend! I had no idea what to do, was staring at a call out charge but I fixed it in 2 minutes (including 1 minute 50 seconds to find the allen keys).
Watched a video about this process and found a ring that had been lost for months lodged in the disposal. Thank you so much. Merry Christmas. Disposal is working.
OMyGosh! I was about to spend at least $85 for someone to install plus money on a new disposal! I had to stick the allen wrench in twice but there was a small seed and a small piece of glass. Thank-you sooooooooo much! Happy Thanksgiving! You should have a donate button on here because I would love to contribute to your efforts and you saved me a lot of money! You definitely have a new subscriber!
YESSSS!! Thank you SO MUCH!! It worked! I prayed that I wouldn't have to buy a new unit, or hire a plumber that would put in a new unit regardless if it was truly broken. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You should start a patreon or something so that I could send some quick money your way. This one video probably saved me hundreds for what was a 5 minute fix, 3 of those minutes were just watching this video!
Thanks for the post... very helpful! Most of the time you don’t need to remove your disposal. Just use a 1/4 Allen wrench and give it a few right and left. It will most likely clear the debris... check to see if humming is gone then plug the drain, full with water and turn on the disposal to clear itself and the pipes.
