Garden planning helps you make the most of the available space and sunlight in your garden. Each new season in the garden can seem overwhelming. Knowing what to plant, when to plant, and where to plant is a juggling act for even experienced gardeners. Taking the time to make a plan will help you be successful.
When you plan ahead, you can prioritize space for the plantings you want to be most successful. Planting crops in the best location and at the right time gives them the best chance for producing well. Rather than buying seeds and plants you don’t need, when you plan your garden in advance you know exactly what you need.

Sorry to hijack the comments but this is important. If you are planning to buy seeds anyway, Baker Seeds is donating 100% of seed sales this weekend to deliver emergency assistance to the people of Ukraine. The owners family was forced to flee their farm in the early 20th century due to Soviet aggression in Ukraine. His father was just a boy when they left Ukraine and settled in the US. Thank you.

I'm going to try the 3 sister's method, indigenous people use plant corn, 2 weeks later, beans, then squash! So many ways to plant as well I'm using African planting method ,in circles, with swales. I decided to use more than one method! Which works better ? Researching options and opportunities as well!! TFS!
@rogerclarke7407
@rogerclarke7407 2 года назад
My experience is mixed with the three sisters. The positive is the pole beans distract the Japanese beetles from the corn, and the squash will make the racoons go elsewhere for corn, maybe (I might have been lucky). The negative the squash maturing in the shade of the corn ripens much more slowly, pick a variety that tastes ok when it's not ripe, and I still have to go out twice a day to pick the beetles off the beans. I saw no difference between the corn with or without beans growing beside them. The squash beans and corn make a tangled mess that is hard to walk through. If you have Japanese beetles in your area, plant some bush beans as well.

My garden plan is simpler. -plant corn were the peas were last year. -plant squash next to the corn. -plant peas next to the squash. The peas will be done by the end of july so the squash can grow into that area. then there will be a bed of lettuce, swiss chard, cabbage, broccoli etc. then a bed of onions, then a bed of carrots, then potatoes leave room for moving over crowded stuff to. Tomatoes and peppers are in the greenhouse.

How do you know what full sun really means in a zone 10 (inland San Diego) south facing garden? It seems crazy that some vegetables can really take that much heat? I can add shade cloth in the back garden but not in the front, so I really don't know what can take the full summer heat or if it's all just going to fry. Any advice?
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden 2 года назад
Right? Same here in Arizona - we get crazy heat but some plants don't mind. Two that come to mind are luffa and sweet potatoes. The more sun and heat the better. Good soil and correct watering helps plants withstand the heat better.

I want to grow some pumpkins and watermelons this year. My raised beds will not have enough room for them. Can I just dig a large hole in the ground, add amendments and good soil and plant. Is ok if all the growth goes over hard ground.

I love planting the seeds and watching for the babies to sprout. Then I have two or three plants that I have to find a place for...I only needed one. So I'm already behind in space.Then I plant my next round of seeds and new babies come up. Have to get more containers and more dirt so that means a trip to the store. So I draw out my plans, do all my planning on what to plant, but wind up with more plants than I planned for. Uh oh, no room. So I start a new spot to put a container and...... By the way< I am a container gardener only as I have a small space. Do you give advise for this addiction? I can't kill the babies I've watched grow by thinning. I always plant them. Now I have no room for what I had in my planning. What do I do?
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden 2 года назад
Admitting you have a problem is always the first step 😀 (kidding!) I think your feelings are pretty common. Two things that may help. 1. Remember that overcrowded plants will not grow as well as those with enough room. 2. Check facebook or other places for seed /transplant exchange groups in your area. I'm sure others would love to have your seedlings. Not everyone grows their own.
