I just brought the striker 4 for $100 with cables, transducer, cover, instructions and even the original box. It’s my first fish finder and it’s going on my kayak. I was really surprised when you said the older model had a better screen and resolution so I’m pretty happy with that. Great video by the way.
There should be more of these side by side comparison videos. Thanks for the upload. Quick draw was important for me living in Michigan's UP where there are many lakes that haven't been charted. I got tired of trying to guess where to fish using hand-drawn DNR depth maps from the 1950s.
Hows the mapping working for ya? Any negative to your experience so far? Im thinking on getting a newer Striker 4CV Plus or the Vivid 4 for same features but better resolution. I live belowe the bridge. Thanks
@@SirShakeJunt Thanks for the quick reply. I will be getting the Striker Vivid 4 fish finder later today I think it comes with clear view. which is a newer(GT 20-TM) transducer. Hopefully try it out on the ice too real soon. Im upgrading from an old 1987 Garmin 240 fish finder and a Etrex handheld GPS with lake contours installed. And a Hummingbird fishing buddy for ice fishing. I made it all work for several years but we'll see what happens. Thanks again
Thanks for the info. I’m going for the mapping on the plus. The last finder I used had huge pixels and made everything look like Mario world so, the resolution is great for me. I think the addition of the mapping feature caused them to go with less resolution for price point. The amount of features that come on the plus for the price is pretty incredible. Thanks again for the heads up, It’s good to know what I’m getting ahead of time, great review.
After seeing your video I searched the internet for the best possible price on the Striker plus 4. Found a place who had a couple refurbished units with the full 1 year warranty. $104.95 shipped. Can't wait to get it! Going to be installed on my new fishing boat.
Update... GPSCITY didn't actually have the refurbished Striker plus 4 units in stock even though they showed me they had them in stock at the time of order. I ended up ordering the standard Striker 4 from Cabela's. At least they had it actually in stock. So I'm looking forward to getting that one.
Good video. Deciding on which one for my little inflatable boat. I’ve never had a fish finder. Think I’ll get the regular striker 4. I don’t need to map the bottom of lakes.
I just bought the older model as I agree with you about the screen resolution. Pne other thing I noticed which is why I picked the regular 4 is that the c scope seems to convey more info for ice fishing, I have watched lots of youtubes of the original and studied them side by side in my local Cabelas. I need nine for kayak fishing and ice fishing....any way thats my 2c
@@scottr8360 Already got the Plus version. If you haven't had the other one and especially if it is the highest class sonar that you ever had like me, I can say that you won't notice any issues. For me personally, the bigger screen is a pro. The resolution isn't that bad(maybe bacuse I can't compare it to the older version) but it totally does its job and I am fine with it.
Brett Courtney Yes I picked one up. Haven’t got to use it to much because of weather and work. But the 3 times I have used it worked good. Also still trying to learn it.
@@bcb8843 awesome unit highly recommend I use it for ice fishing and on my kyak and you technically don't need the ice tranducer but it is alot less of a hassle
Thanks for your Honest Review, good video. I've been in between on which one I wanna get for my kayak, now I know becuz of ur video. I'm gonna get the The Regular plain Garmin Striker 4, I also dont like how the Striker Plus displays the Depth, its soooooo much more tiny than the reg striker. I love the Big display of the depth, so much more convenient in my opinion
@@jacobacosta210 man, I've only taken mine to the lake where I live so I wouldn't know for sure, but I do think it would work. That sensor gonna pick up whatever it sees, hope this helps.
Great Video. Thank You. Hope this little chart I made helps a bit : Video Graphics Array (org by IBM) _VGA=640x480 (IBM org) WVGA=800×480(wide) HVGA=320×480(half org) QVGA=320×240(qtr org)
Thanks for a great video. Now with the newer Garmin Striker Plus 4cv Fishfinder and the Garmin STRIKER Vivid 4 Fishfinder did they fix the resolution? Thanks
this is a good vid between the two, would you know If its possible to manually enter lat long coordinates into both? and while underway, do these garmins show average depths of your surrounding areas??
Thanks for the video. I'm torn between the two as well. I really do not care about contour mapping. I will be fishing all salt water from my kayak. Just need the dept, structure fish info. So the regular 4 seems OK. But the bigger and brighter screen is a big plus on the plus 4. I was even debating to get the striker 5cv but the bigger transducer will stick out on my hobie kayak like 2 inches at the bottom which makes me nervous. So, what you think? Since you have both for a while.. Let me know please.. Thanks 😎
Is the sonar quality and accuracy the same? It looks like the two read outs are completely different so the side by side comparison threw me off (I have to assume it is not displaying the same path/readout). With the plus being a lower image quality, how does it fair in the sun? With polarized sunglasses? TIA
Hi sir i...i have garmin model plus 4 model... I have problems and caution for setting application.. 1.problem is after i settings application for example to background, visual fisih and hz application like dis..i join readay power cable,transducer...i setting in may room trundesor i put only table for settings only..ok after i setting readay application i tes off power suiz after 3@4minit i on back...application i setting return back to normal why like dis...is my problems 2@3time i tes settings still return back..i setting return to normal... 2.my caution for trundesor must put in water sir and settings back ...and function can ok sir...can help explain to i sir..
The difference I noticed on them is the older version has qute a bit larger numbers for the depth reading, is that the way it is or can you make them larger on the 4 plus version. Thanks for a great video
Has anyone else had problems with there's. My screen fogs up and after 3 time using it there is no back light. I have read lots of reviews complaining about the same problem
I realize that it's been a while since you posted the video. Any change in opinion since then? I am fairly new to fly fishing and tend to fish mostly the North/South Thompson & North Okanagan/Shuswap Lakes in British Columbia, Canada. I have a 12-ft aluminum and was wondering if you have any feedback between Garmin Striker 4/4 Plus and Hummingbird PiranhaMax 4 portable models? I am looking at getting a fish finder and it gets a bit confusing at times (CHIRP, DI, GPS, etc.). Any feedback (from anyone) would be greatly appreciated.
@@FishingBasics Thanks for doing the review, But does the revolution deficit on the plus really translate to a significant inability to read the fish or the bottom information on the plus? I mean the colour saturation on the original looks to be better in your review, but it appears to me that you can still see everything equally well, you're not going to miss fish due to the lower resolution?. lots of people are still looking at these models today, especially kayak fishers, so It would be good to hear how you fell a year on. What do you say?
@@williamoneill5498 It's not a deal breaker. The bigger screen may actually be more beneficial for a kayak when you can't really lean in to look at the screen close up. Really boils down to personal preference.
@@FishingBasics gotcha. I am trying to decide on a bigger screen 7' further along or one of these right up next to me. i'll figure it out. many thanks.
So you would get the plus? Just is it that big of a difference I found the 4 for $100 only thing is it out by the stores around me they have the plus for 130 just wondering if it's that big of a difference. On reading it getting it for icefishing mainly have a hummingbird on my boat. But would be spending same on converting it to ice.
I'm pretty sure what you're seeing is just a different color palette. I thought that it looks strange when I first turned mine on as well but if you go into the color schemes you can change it so that it looks the same as the original
@@FishingBasics no I get what you're saying. But I found when I switched it from classic Blue to just blew it looks the same as the last one I had which was the original
I’m curious if anyone has used a 12v or 18v cordless tool battery to power their Striker? I know the manual says “12-20v”. But I’d much rather use a tool battery I already own then buy another one. And I’d like to use the 18v because I have a 12ah M18 battery that should power it for days. That I also have a rapid charger for.
Great video! What's the minimum depth the 4 will do? I plan to use this on the Delaware river where depth can get very shallow. Will this unit tell me live how shallow I am and actuate while going 30-40mph?
Pretty good, readings over 20mph+ get a little delayed but other than that it has help me tons, especially with the ability to set an alarm for to shallow water
I just upgraded to the plus had the a fairy new striker 4 but i got a blob in the screen that would stay there for like 15mins and I l had a drain on the battery when I shut it down so it was still under warranty and I sent it back. I do have a question I bought this for mapping I live on a small lake and this is mounted on my paddle boat I really would like to map the lake for the deeper levels can you map and still use it in the standard mode at the same time if anyone knows?
Wow, I wish I knew why they chose to do that with the screens. Even if the larger one were the same resolution it would still look more pixelated because of the pixel density. When you have two displays with the same resolution but one is physically larger the pixels are larger are well and more noticable. They didn't even use the same resolution though, they lowered it slightly which further exaggerates the pixel issue. I'll have to steer clear of the plus version even though the mapping feature is nice but I use navionics for that.
The new screen probably comes out to be cheaper for them and they figure people don't know any better. I went with the regular 4 with cv, the plus isn't worth it.
@@FishingBasics Yeah I just got the 4 plus and it does not have it either but it was cheap...well cheap for here in Oz anyway, $199- I think the ones that have it are around $350 so not worth the money anyhow, cheers for the video.
Thanks for the video. Just hooked my original SG4 and i had a question that you might be able ti answer. Is the color in the bottim always red or is there anyway to tell when im transitioning from soft (mud) & hard (rock) bottom?
I bought the striker 4 plus and it came with a defective transducer plug. Garmin refused to help me. They wanted me to buy another transducer. I'm going to Lowrance.
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ru-vid.comUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
it works just like a topo map, you'll have contour lines showing changes in depth, with closer lines being steeper drops and more gradual changes having lines farther apart. Each line will indicate a certain depth, with other lines being either deeper or shallower
The striker 4 plus has 4 frequencies l vs 3 frequencies on the old one. The plus is waterproof that's right waterproof. The striker 4 makes no such claims. The mapping capabilities on the plus with 2.5 million acres of mapping space and the waterproofing makes it a no brainer.
A word of caution on the Garmin Striker 4. You get what you pay for. Mine is 2 years old. It's been nothing but problems. Black screen, shutting off intermittently, not registering speed, water temp and time of day all the time and now the newest is it just says my transducer is not connected. It's been one problem after another. Do yourself a favor, don't get all excited thinking you found a $100 electronic that does the same as a $400 or $500 one. You will be disappointed like me. You get what you pay for.
My small Lowrance hook4 is also a POS, turns itself off randomly lately and the screen was never too clear, seems out of focus, and colors do not properly show structure nor fish size; "glad" to hear ,the small Garmin is also a shot in the dark.
