I love the form factor. Unfortunately, with where I'm at in my shooter journey, it's hard to justify the price tag of any chronograph, no matter the brand. That being said, the Garmin sits high on the list when the time comes. Great review, as always. Thanks for all you do!

How does it detect velocity when attached or sitting behind the muzzle. Other brands track the bullet after it leaves the muzzle and to the from what I have seen are always positioned in front of the muzzle.

I build rifles and use a chronograph every week. I have used the old Alpha, magneto speed, a Labradar for the last 6 years and nothing touches the garmin. I have a .17 fireball I built and my Labradar has picked up 3 shots out of about 120 rounds. It will not catch that 20 grain bullet at 3600 FPS, that was the ultimate test for the Garmin. The Garmin has not missed one shot from my .17 Fireball. I also shoot an FX air rifle, my labradar when set up perfect will catch the pellet but it has to be perfect, The Garmin, just throw it on the table and it never missed a pellet. Could not be happier. Needless to say, the labradar is for sale...

My Labradar doesn't track the bullet much past 100 to 120 yards or so anyways. For my .224 88 ELD-M bullets it doesn't track it much past 80 yards, so I'm not sure how "great" a BC number you'll get from that.

I've been lucky recently and getting consistent tracking out to 98 yards on the 88 ELD-M bullets using the Labradar. But the SNL (signal to noise) ratio is usually bad so you can't really trust that those numbers are accurate past about 85 yards.

I purchased the Garmin a week ago, it showed up yesterday/Friday, took it out today and tested it on my F-T/R set up. 308 and it worked perfectly. No missed or dropped shots, I was prone with a bipod and used it on the tripod it came with and seemed to be awesome. Linked to my phone and transferred data as soon as I ended the session, I did the same thing you did, "why isn't it transferring to my phone..." Anyways it's gonna be my goto for chronograph info.

thank you for both videos. I'm considering this chronograph as a LabRadar replacement, but I still don't know how high repeatability it works. I found the accuracy to be 0.4% ok, we are talking about absolute accuracy, but what is the differential accuracy? For me it is essential, because the SD of my rifles is even 0.4 fps for 25 shots in a row! and if it is not capable of recording very small changes in speed, then it should be useless.

Yeah. It's cool that Lab Radar gives you BC but, unless you're developing your own bullets, you can just get it from the manufacturer. I personally think the fact that the Garmin is so compact (meaning you'll actually use it) outweighs that ability to give you BC.

I have a lab radar since they came out. Of course it works but they are very temperamental to say the least and very problematic with suppressors and hassle and to aim them. I would personally, though I have only seen a handful of Garmin reviews , consider the Garmin. Or Wait and get a Lab Radar on a big sale. That’s what LR will most likely have to to do to stay competitive against this Garmin.

I purchased a lab radar years ago and as most of us thought it was the cats ass in the industry. Large bulky and crap for power consumption. I always spent more time trying to aim it down range to get it spot on so it would work without dropping shots. The battery life is completely crap in the summer and in the winter, forget it, if you didn't have battery backup your not going anywhere. I sold my LR and purchased the Garmin and I haven't looked back yet. There is NOTHING about the labradar that I miss. The portability and battery life has blown the LR out of the water so bad its ridiculous. I know that LR has a new unit that looks similar to the Garmin so who at Garmin let the cat out of the bag. I have even held the Garmin in hand while my son was shooting and it picked up the shots. Thats impressive. As for battery life, It sips the energy from a battery like I sip a dry wine, all weekend baby and its still ready to go for more. Garmin really did a great job with this unit. Can't wait to see the gen2

I have been really pleased with my Garmin until the other day at an indoor range ( which may be my issue ) it will not register my Rock Island 22 TCM factory ammunition and would only record my 22 TCM reloads after I, out of frustration changed to the rifle mode . It did then record 3 out of 10 rounds of factory and if I remember correctly 8 of the 10 reloads. Otherwise I'm totally satisfied with the unit. It does function perfectly with my recently purchased S & W 22 magnum pistol. It was a 25 yard range, the instructions with the Garmin does state it should be used at 20 yards but this has never been an issue with anything else I have used.
@PrecisionRifleNetwork
@PrecisionRifleNetwork 7 месяцев назад
I believe that means it reads just the first 20y. Use it inside that distance. Meaning you wouldn’t setup the Garmin 50y downrange and try to shoot over it. Apologies if I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying.

My only concern is WHERE does it record the velocity? Does it capture the velocity consistently at the same distance from the muzzle each time? Like the first shot could get recorded at 4 yards, and the next could be recorded at 13 yards. How can we KNOW with the Garmin what distance from the muzzle is it capturing the speed? The Garmin already gives a "calculated" MV number based on where it picked up the bullet to begin tracking it, just like the Lab Radar does. I can't say I love that. At least with the Magnetospeed we KNOW EXACTLY where it is recording the speed, and it shows you the raw number, not a "Calculated" muzzle velocity based on some algorithm to calculate what the MV might be at the muzzle.
@PrecisionRifleNetwork
@PrecisionRifleNetwork 3 месяца назад
I hear what you’re saying, but I just don’t think that couple FPS of potential error matters, especially when you should be truing out your data at distance anyway. No matter what the chrono says. The info on the box of ammo, chronographs, etc. are all “try dope”, then you test it in the field and get actual data.
@Rico11b
@Rico11b 3 месяца назад
@@PrecisionRifleNetwork Totally agree, my comment was more for the wider audience. It can make a big difference for shooters that do "velocity driven" load development and those searching for super low SD/ES loads thinking they are the holy grail. The if the chronograph is only giving you a "calculated" MV then you could be chasing your tail forever when the problem could be that the chronograph is tracking velocities of each shot at different distances from the muzzle and then displaying a "calculated" MV based on where it began tracking that bullet.

How fussy is the Garmin Xero with alignment to the target? I'm a Palma shooter, prone unsupported with a sling. I purchased the bullet seeker thinking I could place the unit on a tripod just in front of me and get information about the performance of my ammunition without affecting my shooting position. It turns out that the bullet seeker is so fussy about alignment with the bore that I have only achieved reliable readings with the bullet seeker attached to the barrel. Can I just set the Garmin down on the ground in front of me (on it's supplied tripod) and get accurate measurements?
@PrecisionRifleNetwork

I've also heard that shooters have had great results as short as 10 yards; Has anyone out there tested that? Would love that flexibility.
@PrecisionRifleNetwork

it honestly shouldn't matter what distance you're testing it at. It picks up shots from right next to the rifle out to 20 yards. Am I understanding your question correctly?

@@PrecisionRifleNetwork For some reason, my last reply did not post... I was referring to Garmin's comments in their owner's manual under Alignment Considerations, where they state "Always ensure the projectile can travel at least 20 meters or 20 yards in front of the chronograph." I suspect it is due to the nature of the Doppler-based system, but was curious if they were just being over-cautious in their recommendation. From what I've seen from other shooters, they seemed to get decent results at 10 yards. Like you, I did not expect distance to target to matter, but there you go.

I got the Garmin Xero mostly to diagnose issues with my spring powered Air Rifle. I own an Ohler 35, which is used to be the industry standard. I tested the Garmin Xero against the Ohler 35. The Garmin smoked it. You have to have everything perfectly set up for the Ohler 35 to read. The Garmin never fails. The size of the Garmin and ease of use is simply amazing. I don't need the sky screen issues and wind problems any more.

Hi! I am kind of a tech enthusiast for Garmin stuff on the fitness side of things, but I'm also curious enough to check what the company does in other fields. I've watched several Xero videos, and I think I kind of understand now what the unit does. But.. do you have a video explaining, how and where this information is useful? I'm really not into shooting (although I still have my longbow), but I am curious, if there is a simple explanation for n00bs. Thanks!
@PrecisionRifleNetwork
@PrecisionRifleNetwork 10 месяцев назад
Hmm there may be videos out there, but I think I can explain it simply. We use muzzle velocity (the speed of the bullet out of the end of the barrel) as well as the time of flight of the bullet and gravity to determine how far the bullet will travel. These calculations help us know how far to aim above or “hold over” a target in order to have the bullet hit the target we’re aiming at. Think about shooting a cannon back in the day… they had to aim it way up in the air right. The cannon ball would arc way up and then come back down at a certain distance. This is basically the same thing we are doing with long range shooting. The chronograph just gives us a very important piece of the information we need to be more accurate when we launch a projectile into the air. Please feel free to ask any follow up questions.
@MateHegyhati
@MateHegyhati 10 месяцев назад
@@PrecisionRifleNetworkThank you! Yes, so far I can understand this, and the physics behind it. What I am not sure about when and how you use that information. My way of thinking is: 1) you can use Xero to measure this velocity for a riffle, ammo combination. If no one has done it before. I would assume, that the same riffle with the same ammo has roughly the same values (or has similar deviation as seen between shots) So if someone already measured it, and put it into a table online, you can just look it up. If not, you can measure it yourself with Xero. (I'd also assume, that temperature and whatnot also plays a role, I'm not sure how significant though) 2) In a competition, if you have several shots, you make a calculation for how much to aim upwards based on these values, the distance, angle (I guees that is what the ballistic models of Garmin watches can help you with). But there are other factors, that influence drag. So if you see, that your first shot was 10 cm below, you can adjust better by knowing the velocity right there. 3) In a "real life scenario", like hunting or mission I'd assume that you only have one shot, after that the target moves, so precision calculations are out of the window at that point. So basically what my "deduction" tells me is, that these chronographs main usage is in "preparation" to have better values for the calculation when it matters. But they do not provide help "during action". Then again, I don't know anything about shooting, so I am probably completely wrong, that's why I'm asking 😀 And thank you very much for your time and explaining it to me, I really appreciate it. 🙂

@@MateHegyhati Sorry to man-splain it, but I do appreciate someone outside the shooting community showing interest. There are at least two applications where a chronograph is necessary: First, as @PrecisionRifleNetwork pointed out, muzzle velocity is a vital data point for ballistic calculators. Every rifle is different so you can't just use the muzzle velocity printed on the box of ammunition (two identical model rifles will behave differently because the tooling that cuts the chambers wears down, and because there is magic in there, besides the ammo manufacturer probably used a different barrel length than you might have). Long range competitors or hunters use a laser rangefinder and enter the distance and other factors (principally the muzzle velocity) into the ballistic solver (on a phone app or a portable weather station like a Kestrel, I'm not aware of any ballistics function on a Garmin watch and I'm on my third one) and it yields the amount of "come up" or hold-over so you can dial the turret of your rifle scope for a specific distance and environmental conditions. In a hunting scenario its still important to know the muzzle velocity of that ammunition load. Some shooters carry a "DOPE" (Data on Previous Engagements) card listing the turret adjustments for each yardage interval, and there are laser rangefinders built into some binoculars. So the "preparation" phase does carry into the field. For more on your musings about "drag," read up on "ballistic coefficient." Second main use is for ammunition reloaders in order to know the performance of a certain combination of primer, brass case, powder type and charge weight, and projectile type and weight. Big bonus of this chronograph is the form factor as much as the reliability.
@MateHegyhati
@MateHegyhati 9 месяцев назад
@@bobvi5490 Thank you very much for the EXplanation, I really appreciate it. Sorry for the long response time, work have been... busy. So if I understand correctly, two guns with the same model number can have different muzzle velocity with the same ammo, and this difference can be significant compared to the "natural deviation" observed for the same gun with the same type of ammo. (This also implies that the gun used with the same ammo later can be expected to have similar muzzle velocity.) That is clear, and the hold-over calculation as well. So basically, each gun is unique, so these calcualtions has to be done for each gun - ammo type pair, not just for gun type - ammo type pairs. So going back to my original question, the chronograph is really mostly used in preparation, then the data can be used for calculations "in action". But of course, if the data is also measured there, it also adds to the accuracy/consistency of the data used for later calculations. Hope I didn't get anything wrong. (Also thanks for the reloader info, I didn't know that is a thing.) For ballistic calculations on Garmin watches, I know of this one: support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=L0R2b03k7EArLmL5CvJsD6 Thanks again!

Thank you for the informative video on the Garmin. You're correct, time to ditch the Labradar due to its size and inconsistent performance. In the past Labradar was notorious for ignoring its customer's and not fixing software issues. If Labradar hadn't ignored its customer's for so many years, I would had gone with their new small chronograph. That's why I bought the Garmin chronograph yesterday and will be trying it out at the gun range this morning. For a while, I had been contemplating buying a Labradar, but it appeared to be very big and cumbersome to where you'd need a standalone case to transport it with, unlike this Garmin. Just heads up to anyone with a garmin xero c1 pro. I contacted garmin directly and asked about the mounts like he used in this that mounts the chrono the the side of the rifle via arca or mlok etc and garmin directly told me that the mounts are 3rd party obviously and because of that any use of the mount with the chronograph voids the warranty completely from that point. So if you use the mount be careful is all im gonna say because technically if they can find out you attached that chronograph to the mount at any point during the time you owned it the warranty is voided from that point on.
