Sandstone Estate's class NGG16 No.113 is one of the star attractions at the Estate. This iconic steam locomotive was built in 1939 by Beyer, Peacock & Co. in Manchester, UK, and served on the South Africa Railways for many years.
No.113 is one of the largest narrow gauge steam locomotives in the world, measuring 52 feet in length and weighing 75 tons. It has a unique articulated design, with two sets of cylinders and driving wheels connected by a central frame. This allows it to negotiate tight curves and steep gradients with ease, making it ideal for the rugged terrain of South Africa's railways.
At Sandstone Estate's Steam and Cosmos Festival 2023, visitors marvelled at the sight of No 113 in action, as it powers its way through the scenic countryside. The locomotive has been lovingly restored and maintained by the Sandstone Heritage Trust, and is a testament to the skill and dedication of the staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to preserve these historic machines.
In addition to No 113, the festival offered a range of other steam locomotives and vintage machinery, as well as live music, food stalls, and family-friendly activities. It is a celebration of South Africa's rich railway heritage and a chance to step back in time and experience the golden age of steam travel.
